Americans who attend church regularly say they go to get closer to God, and more than a third of those who attend only a couple times a year say they practice their faith in other ways.

Eighty-one percent of those who go to church at least twice a month say they always or often experience God’s presence when they attend church, according to Pew Research.

Almost seven in ten say they go to church so their kids will have a moral foundation.

But the study found church attendance in general continues to decline.

American Family Association’s Ed Vitagliano says the pace of life – “busyness” – is the main cause.

“But it is also doing other things to family life and so on,” he observes. “So I’m not really that surprised that that would cause at least some drawback from church.”

Even those who don’t attend church regularly say they are hanging on to spirituality. Thirty-seven percent of them say they practice their faith in other ways.
