Robert Griffin III’s pursuit of an NFL career revival won’t carry on in Cleveland.

The Browns released the quarterback on Friday, the team announced.

The move was not tied to the Browns’ acquisition of quarterback Brock Osweiler via trade with the Houston Texans, a person with team’s intentions said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team was still attempting to move Osweiler in another deal.

Griffin was due a $750,000 roster bonus Saturday.

The 2012 offensive rookie of the year struggled to get on track in his restart with the Browns this season, suffering a shoulder injury in Week 1. He returned in December but threw just two touchdown passes in five games.

Griffin now hits an open market in which several teams have already made moves for quarterbacks. He visited with the New York Jets last year, and the team still has a need at the position.

Kawhi Leonard will also miss the game for San Antonio.

The Golden State Warriors will rest their key rotation players and risk dropping three straight games when they play the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday, head coach Steve Kerr announced on Friday.

Stephen CurryDraymond GreenKlay Thompson and Andre Iguodala will all be given nights off for rest on the second night of the back-to-back, a day after losing to the Timberwolves. For San Antonio, Kawhi Leonard will miss the game with a concussion suffered Thursday night.

The game matters in the standings, even with both teams missing players. The Spurs are only 1.5 games back of the Warriors for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, and Golden State has been tumbling as of late. The Warriors have lost four of their last six games, but haven’t lost three straight games since Nov. 2013. Going up San Antonio, even without Leonard, could change that.

“It was a tough situation for all of us,” Barnes told ESPN in his first interview on the situation since the trade. “They were so adamant about not trading him. I mean, I understand this is a business and you got to do what’s best for the franchise, but when you go out of your way time and time again to say you’re not going to do something and then do something and not consulting someone is a funny way of handling it, to say the least.”

Barnes played 54 games with Cousins this season before being released in February, shortly after the big man was shipped to New Orleans. Even though Barnes is 11 years his senior, he and Cousins instantly clicked and were inseparable.

Is Robert Griffin III interested in joining the Jets? James Lang-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Jets need a quarterback. Robert Griffin III is looking for a new job with reports surfacing that the Cleveland Browns will release the former Pro Bowl signal-caller.

So, it stands to reason that the two might be linked.

Even before he’s officially hit the free agent market, RG3 is reportedly already showing interest in signing with the aforementioned Jets.

“It’s unclear if the Jets have any interest in signing recently released quarterback Robert Griffin III,” Connor Hughes of NJ.com reported on Friday. “But the former Rookie of the Year is intrigued by the possibility of playing for the quarterback-needy Jets, according to a person familiar with Griffin’s thinking.”

It’s important to note that the Jets might not be interested in bringing in a Browns retread. It’s also important to note that at this point in his career, RG3 would likely be interested in signing with any NFL team.
