screen-shot-2014-01-06-at-11-39-38-am.png?w=640&h=388An unshaven, well-dressed Tim Tebow made his ESPN debut on Monday in a 10 a.m. ET SportsCenter segment live from the Rose Bowl. Tebow was on set in Pasadena, hours before Florida State and Auburn meet in the BCS national championship. He delivered his first response with clarity, poise and few signs of nerves. All in all, it was a fine debut for the 26-year-old former quarterback.
After some light ribbing about his Dolce & Gabbana suit from fellow Florida alum Jesse Palmer, Tebow fielded a softball question about how he prepared for his two national championship game appearances with the Gators. In his 53-second response, he managed to sneak in a reference to his faith and dropped the word "homeostasis" on an unsuspecting audience.
Homeostasis (n): The ability or tendency of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes.
Someone was studying his thesaurus last night.
Though Tebow's first answer was fine, predicting his television future based on that one response is like slotting a quarterback for the Hall of Fame because he completes his first pass. (Case in point: Tebow's first NFL pass went for a touchdown.) The real Tebow will begin to show himself in the future. He's not going to be able to go to the "when I played" well too many times. Will he be able to make critiques of players and teams? Can he analyze film to preview a game, then give insight on what happened after the game is played? Is his banter going to be stilted, like in his debut, or can he develop a camaraderie with other analysts?
