Martin Freeman has revealed that he turned to higher powers as he did some of the stunts in The Hobbit sequel.
The Sherlock star, who has reprised his role as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's next instalment, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, spent a week tumbling down a fast-flowing river in barrels.
"That's the week that I prayed," he quipped.
"Every day before going on set, I would say a quick prayer. There was an element of danger with the barrels even though you are well looked after."
In the follow-up to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo finds himself in unusual circumstances, but the actor said he relished doing all the messy stunts.
"It was more fun than it looks. It was highly enjoyable. The doing of all those things is fun," he said.
"I remember that day when we filmed coming up from the toilet - not very glamorous and a bit yucky, but it's all fun. Being covered in fish is disgusting again and kind of fun.
"Spiders were very fun. There's more action and stuff going on. Some of it we shot so long ago that you forget you did it or you think somebody else did it," he added.
The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, also starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Luke Evans and Evangeline Lilly, will be in cinemas on December 13.
