Venus Williams earned the 700th victory of her career Tuesday by beating German qualifier Julia Goerges 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of Wuhan Open.

Williams is a seven-time major champion who won her last Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2008.

Serena Williams’ pursuit of the calendar-year Grand Slam is over, as the 21-time major champion was defeated by unseeded Italian Roberta Vinci 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the US Open semifinals Friday.

Williams was attempting to become the first woman to win all four majors in a season since Steffi Graf in 1988. Williams also could have tied Graf for the second-most Grand Slam singles titles behind Margaret Court’s 24.

The Williams sisters have advanced to the third round at the Australian Open, with top-ranked Serena fending off set points before going on a 10-game roll to beat Vera Zvonareva 7-5, 6-0 and Venus beating fellow American Lauren Davis in straight sets.
