Luke Walton has agreed to be the Los Angeles Lakers' new head coach, with the sides agreeing to a multiyear deal Friday, the team said.

Walton spent nine seasons with the Lakers, winning two championship rings as a smart, steady contributor. Three years after his retirement, the 36-year-old Southern California native is back to become the 26th head coach in franchise history.

"I loved everything about my time at Golden State and learning from Steve (Kerr)," Walton told

Just hours before Kobe Bryant took the court for the very last time, the champion’s wife, Vanessa Bryant spoke out.

Bryant posted a long message on Instagram Wednesday afternoon detailing her family’s sacrifice during Bryant’s journey in the NBA. The beauty also not only wrote how thrilled she is for the athlete to be “home more often,” but expressed how thankful she is that their family “managed to persevere against the odds” despite the “ups and downs.”

Kobe Bryant always studied Michael Jordan’s game. That continued even to his retirement letter.

Kobe Bryant announced his retirement at the end of the season via an open letter to basketball, posted at The Players Tribune. It was a poignant way for one of the NBA’s greatest players to tell the world that he’s hanging it up.

You know who also chose an open letter to basketball to signal his retirement? Michael Jordan. On April 20, 2003, Nike took out a full-page ad

Phil Jackson has been remarkably open and frank about his tumultuous first season in New York and his past stints with the Bulls and Lakers in a series of interviews with Charlie Rosen for ESPN, and in an interview published Monday, Jackson recounts how difficult his relationship with Kobe Bryant was at times.

In February, Kobe Bryant reflected on his career in an interview with GQ, and argued that he could have left the Lakers before signing a contract extension in 1999 and taken over the

The Lakers finally got the point guard who intrigued them over the years.

They initially tried to sign Jeremy Lin as an undrafted rookie in 2010 but he chose Golden State for the same amount of money. (It was closer to home.)

In a less-publicized action, the Lakers put in a waiver claim for Lin when Golden State dropped him in 2011. Houston had a worse record than the Lakers and was awarded him.

But the Lakers acquired him in a trade with the Rockets this month.

“This time, we got Jeremy Lin

But now that Superman has flown his talents to the Houston Rockets, there's not a panicked Lakers fan in sight. Nor should there be.

The proud purple-and-gold nation knows that there may well be a letdown in the short-term now that their disastrous one-year experiment with Howard is officially over. It also knows that better days still lie ahead in a not-so distant future.
