Jameis Winston will sit out of the game against Clemson this week.

The Heisman Trophy winner stood atop a table and bellowed words that can’t be repeated here. Google them if you must. Winston stood before the Florida State student body, many of whom were more than happy to live tweet the events for those of us not present, and shouted a tired, vulgar internet meme.

For this, he gets a game suspension.

Winston had two jobs this fall: Play football and don’t do anything stupid.

That’s it. All he had to do was spend the next five months throwing touchdowns and not being a belligerent oaf. Florida State would host a spring workout. NFL scouts would marvel at Winston’s arm strength and mobility. Everyone would solemnly nod in agreement. Yes, this guy is going to be the first pick in the 2015 draft.

He would be the first pick because he’s matured so much, you see. He hadn’t stolen crab legs or been accused of sexual assault in forever. This young man has learned his lesson. He’s grown. He’s made the most of this third chance at redemption.

Or not.

Look, we all do dumb things in college. Everyone makes mistakes. But then we learn from them, hopefully. We realize we can’t keep making the same mistakes. We learn that crab legs can be purchased.

We don’t stand on tables and loudly proclaim our ignorance and arrogance for all the world.
