Cam Newton says every night, he prays to God about giving hope to other people.

Newton, the 28-year-old Carolina Panthers quarterback, revealed his prayers after a game against the New England Patriots on Sunday. During the Panthers 33-30 win over the Pats, the QB scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter of the game and celebrated with a clenched fist in the air.

When explaining his symbolic end zone celebration to reporters, Newton also revealed his prayers for his platform.

“It was to signify black power but more important, I pray every night for God to give me a pinnacle to give people hope,” Newton said after the game Sunday.

Newton’s “black power” stance comes as the NFL has been protesting the national anthem over mistreatment of minorities in a movement sparked by free agent QB Colin Kaepernick. However, Newton has received some criticism for something other than his end zone celebration.
