pp_120228043040.jpgUp and coming Christian Hip-hop artist, Jadee Lamez (luh-mez) makes a huge statement with his free EP release “Lame.” The young emcee erupts on the hip-hop scene with this southern-theological style. Not only does Jadee Lamez challenge ministers and rappers to be careful to make sure that their lives offstage reflect their messages on stage, but he does so while subliminally touching on the issue of debatable doctrine in the church, personal

life experience, breaking down what it means to be lame and does so in a lyrical format.

When speaking of “Lame” Jadee Lamez says, “I want people to be encouraged to understand that lame is a name I was called for my belief in Christ growing up. As a hip-hop artist, I used it as a play on and now it's part of my ministry. It is also my hope that young Christians are inspired to impact their communities and schools no matter what peer pressure they face to do the opposite.”

Jadee Lamez’s “Lame” not only addresses vital issues of the church, but it also does so while stimulating the listener’s ear with it’s bass enriched produced tracks. In addition, Jadee also teams up with Cross Movement’s K-Drama, Dre Murray, Pettidee, PKoneday, T-Haddy, T-Word, and Tony Stone (Reflection Music Group), who mixed the record. As this is the first of many upcoming releases from Jadee Lamez, the Christian hip-hop community should stay tuned for even more first-rate music to come.

FINAL SPARKLE: Jordin Sparks, left, and Whitney Houston, co-star in a remake of movie that Ms. Houston had been obsessed with as a teenager in New Jersey. (TriStar Pictures)

A delicate film release: Whitney Houston acts and sings in the star-crossed 'Sparkle'
In 1976, when Whitney Houston was a teenager in New Jersey, she saw a film called "Sparkle." She was so taken by its message, she used to say, that every Saturday for four straight months she'd go to the movie theater to catch the matinee.
The movie told the story of an obedient, churchgoing teen in 1950s Harlem who overcomes obstacles to achieve her a dream of becoming a famous singer. Made for just $1.6 million, it barely broke even at the box office. Ms. Houston, of course, would grow up to become one of the top-selling recording artists of all time.
Later, she would become executive producer of a "Sparkle" remake. "I just never ever let go of it," Ms. Houston said at a news conference late last year on the set in Detroit. She also appears in the new version--due in theaters Sept. 17--as Emma, the strict mother of the title character (played by "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks) and her two rebellious sisters.
Filming wrapped last fall. Then, the night before the Grammy Awards ceremony in February, Ms. Houston drowned in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, just days after recording "Celebrate," the song that runs over the film's closing credits. The public grieving was enormous, made even more so by her self-destructive trajectory. Although her death was ruled accidental, drugs were found on the scene and the autopsy found evidence of the ravages of cocaine.
The new "Sparkle" had a modest $14 million budget and no one expected a blackbuster. But it could do brisk box office business as fans of Ms. Houston turn out to see their beloved icon give her final performance.
"It's a heavy responsibility," says DeVon Franklin, senior vice president of production at Sony.
The studio didn't want to alienate fans by seeming to exploit her death, especially a death that created a tabloid frenzy.
Instead of attempting to capitalize on the moment by rushing the film into theaters, executives decided to stick with the film's originally scheduled August release date. The film wasn't ready, and they wanted more time to finalize its marketing campaign. Only one scene, in which Ms. Houston's character's daughters slip a sedative into her tea so they can sneak out, was excised from the film.
"We thought that was a little too much," says producer Debra Martin Chase, referring to Ms. Houston's long battle with drugs. Although the first ads largely focused on Ms. Sparks and her two sisters, the campaign has gradually introduced Ms. Houston, inviting fans to "celebrate the legend."
Care was taken not to overemphasize Ms. Houston to the exclusion of others. While early posters featured Ms. Sparks singing in a slinky red dress, a newly released ad shows Ms. Houston with her arm wrapped around her co-star.
"We would have been remiss if we said, 'Here's Whitney Houston's last film' rather than saying, 'Here's a story about three girls'" to familiarize the audience with the film, said Mr. Franklin.

It took long enough, but it appears our long, national "Dwightmare" is over.

Citing people with direct knowledge of the trade talks, ESPN and other news organizations reported Thursday night that a four-team blockbuster trade that will send Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers is complete, pending NBA approval.
"He's ecstatic ... just incredibly happy to be moving on to the Lakers, moving out of Orlando," ESPN's Stephen A. Smith said of a conversation with Howard. "He's just anxious to put the events of the past behind him. ... His attitude is this is second home to him already (because Howard has spent time in Los Angeles rehabilitating his back).
"One of the things he told me, 'I can assure you I'm happy to be here.' "
The trade is set to go down like this, ESPN reports: The Lakers will receive Howard from the Orlando Magic; the Philadelphia 76ers will receive Lakers center Andrew Bynum and Magic guard Jason Richardson; the Denver Nuggets will receive 76ers guard Andre Iguodala; and the Magic will get Nuggets guard Arron Afflalo and forward Al Harrington, 76ers center Nikola Vucevic and forward Maurice Harkless and one protected future first-round pick from each of the other three teams.

harry-belafonte-beyonce-jay-z-16x9.jpg
Harry Belafonte sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter for a Q&A that was supposed to focus on his receiving the Golden Leopard Honor Award, which was bestowed on the legendary singer and actor by the Locarno Film Festival.

Instead, the respected entertainer used the opportunity to speak out against what he sees as a power structure that continues to oppress the masses despite decades of activism. Belafonte particularly derides President Obama for maintaining a status quo that enables our government to violate civil liberties, while calling out black stars like Jay-Z and Beyoncé for their apathy, when they have the ability to inspire change.

"The power in many societies has become almost absolute," Belafonte told the Tinseltown industry outlet. "What we did during the Bush period, what we still continue to do, even with Barack Obama, is the continuency of not changing the paradigm, of not changing the view. We still have laws that encourage torture, we did not change Guantanamo, we have laws that allow the police to arrest you at any time, not having to tell you why, and take you wherever they want. This kind of capitalism is taking us to the doorstep of [a] Fourth Reich, I think."
These are strong words from one many would consider an elder statesmen of the Civil Rights Movement. Belafonte, along with entertainers such as Sidney Poitier and Josephine Baker, are part of an older guard of African-Americans in the public eye for whom it was as important to be politically active as it was to be wealthy and watched. Baker refused to play for segregated audiences during the '50s to protest American racism. Poitier used his success to push for greater integration on Hollywood film crews.
Belafonte's contributions to the Civil Rights Movement are numerous -- including financially assisting Dr. Martin Luther King, who considered Belafonte to be a close confidante. He is dismayed that today's African-American celebrities do not in his opinion reflect the same level of dedication. Belafonte even believes that at least one white star could teach black luminaries a thing or two about social awareness.

"We are dealing with a topic that affects everybody - betrayal and disppointment in each other. This is more than a Christian topic, but a relationship topic," said Redeemed of Rekonciled. The song breaks down the types of relationships that we all have, and points to the one who is greater than all, Jesus Christ. "Christ is greater than all of our relationships and all of our problems and struggles in this life. No matter who and no matter what the situation, Christ is there to heal and mend all wounds," said KT of Rekonciled. The song focuses on Christ as the one-and-only true, Forever Love. When all others fail us, Christ remains there ready to love us and will never leave us.

"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39

Chick-fil-A announced Thursday morning that supporters who flocked to the restaurant for "Appreciation Day" propelled the company to a "record-setting day."

The statement confirmed anecdotal claims that the long lines seen at Chick-fil-A's across the country Wednesday fueled unprecedented sales. The turnout came after CEO Dan Cathy came under fire in some circles for his opposition to same-sex marriage.
"We are very grateful and humbled by the incredible turnout of loyal Chick-fil-A customers on August 1 at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country. We congratulate local Chick-fil-A Owner/Operators and their team members for striving to serve each and every customer with genuine hospitality," the company said in a statement. "While we don't release exact sales numbers, we can confirm reports that it was a record-setting day."
Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and Fox News host who initially made the call for patrons to show up for "Appreciation Day," also said Thursday that the turnout went beyond "anything I could have imagined."
Huckabee said the call for an "Appreciation Day" was in response to what he described as "economic bullying" by people trying to put Cathy "out of business."
"It was just getting out of hand," Huckabee said.
The protests against Cathy included local mayors threatening to keep the restaurant out of their city.
But on Wednesday, stores were packed and lines poured into the streets.
"It's gone beyond anything I could have imagined," Huckabee told Fox News. "Every one of (the stores) that I know have reported record, historic sales yesterday. ... A lot of the stores ran out of chicken before the end of the day."
Critics of Chick-fil-A argue that the company's opposition to gay marriage goes well beyond Cathy's statements. Over the years, its philanthropic wing, WinShape, has donated millions of dollars to outside organizations that actively lobby against efforts to legalize same-sex marriage.
But Huckabee said when he's doing business with any company, "I'm not buying their politics. I'm buying their product. "
Huckabee said one demographic, though, wasn't thrilled about Wednesday's turnout: "Actually I don't think the chickens were too happy about the day. They really gave their lives in mass numbers."

Gov. Phil Bryant says it is "unfortunate" that a predominantly white church in central Mississippi wouldn't allow a black couple to get married in its sanctuary.

Bryant says Mississippi should encourage the union of any couple - as long as the couple is made up of a man and a woman.
Bryant responded to questions about the wedding flap from The Associated Press on Thursday after he spoke at the Neshoba County Fair.
Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson say they weren't allowed to marry at First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs.
The Rev. Stan Weatherford, pastor of the church, married the Wilsons earlier this month at a predominantly black church. The wedding was moved after some congregants told Weatherford they opposed allowing black people to marry in the church.

4798A majority of residents in 13 states and the District of Columbia approved of the job Barack Obama did as president during the first six months of 2012. His highest ratings by state were in Hawaii (63%) and Rhode Island (58%), in addition to the 83% approval from District of Columbia residents. In 16 states, his approval rating averaged below 40%, with residents of Utah, Wyoming, and Alaska least approving.

The 13 states and District of Columbia with majorities approving of Obama's job performance in the first half of 2012 is a slight increase from Obama's 2011 totals, as all 10 states with 50% or greater approval in 2011 remained at that level and were joined by Rhode Island, Washington state, and Minnesota. Additionally, Obama's approval rating fell just below the majority approval threshold in Michigan and Wisconsin, two key swing states this presidential election year. Six other states had approval ratings of 46% or 47%.
The 50% approval mark is significant because post-World War II incumbent presidents who have been above 50% job approval on Election Day were easily re-elected. Presidents with approval ratings below 50% have more uncertain re-election prospects. Historically, two presidents below 50% in their final approval rating before the election -- George W. Bush and Harry Truman -- won, and three, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H.W. Bush, lost.
From January to June of this year, Gallup asked more than 90,000 U.S. adults whether they approved or disapproved of the job Obama is doing as president. Nationwide, 46% of Americans approved and 46% disapproved during this time. Gallup interviewed at least 500 residents in 41 states and at least 1,000 residents in 32 states in the first half of the year. Gallup weights each state sample according to U.S. Census parameters to ensure it is demographically representative of that state's adult population.

Set your heart on things above

by Jack Jones

Since, then you have been raised with Christ, set your heart on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things (3 Col 1-2).

The Apostle Paul exhorts his readers to set their hearts and minds on Christ. Not on earthly desires, not on this world and what it offers, rather on Christ and what He offers.

How often we are told to love this life and this world yet the Apostle John writes "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him" (1 Jn 2:15). Alternative propositions jostle for our souls. Love Life! Inventive marketing slogans infiltrate our minds. Christ's message, however, stands in stark contrast "they did not love their lives so much as to shrink back from death" (Rev 12:11). In this context Jesus refers to the martyrs who gladly forfeit their lives rather than denying Christ. Followers, who in losing their lives for Christ, are among the first to receive eternal life (1 Thess 4:16).

Deny this existence, take up your cross and follow Christ. Set your heart and your mind on Him, not on earthly things. This is the message of Christ. It is the message He lived.

As Paul surveys the landscape he witnesses people led astray by falsities (like sheep without a shepherd) their lives are exploited in the pursuit of worldly success, the love of money or living primarily for pleasure. This is not following Christ. This is following the world.

As millions lay dying of starvation we watch football; the extent of indifference is overwhelming. Scripture tells us in the last days people will have a veneer of Godliness but their hearts will be far from Him. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, fun lovers rather than lovers of God (2 Timothy 3:2-5).

Demas was a travelling companion of the Apostle Paul (Col. 4:14Philemon 24). Together they worked, enduring various troubles and persecution, to extend the kingdom of God. This speaks highly of Demas at that point in time, for Paul was very selective and careful with whom he labored for the Lord. This is apparent since he rejected John (also called Mark) for his past unfaithfulness (Acts 15:37-41). However, in Paul's last letter before his own martyrdom, he informed Timothy of the following change in Demas:

For Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica (2 Tim. 4:10,) (Corner, 2000).

Where is your heart and your mind? Are they truly focused on Christ and what Christ wants? Challenging this notion could be the most difficult hurdle of your existence. It is also the most important.

"What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" Jesus Christ

Gravity Press

Reach Records co-owner/artist Lecrae spoke with publication giant Billboard.com to talk about his new album "Gravity" to be released on September 4th, his collaboration with rapper Big K.R.I.T., and more. Check it out:

You've seen success on the Billboard charts and elsewhere. Is there anything you haven't done with your music that you'd like to do in the near future?

As long as the charts are a reflection of people really tracking my music and being inspired by it, I want to continue to stay there.

What sets "Gravity" apart from your past releases?
Obviously, there's more risk involved in terms of just making more mature music that's not as straight [and] explicit. it's dealing with bigger issues. People may have to think a little bit more. The production is a lot bigger and more advanced than it's been. Lyrically, as an artist, I think I've written some of the best lyrics I've ever written.

What sparked the ingenuity with this album?
Life, travel, relationships. In a couple years, I've experienced so much, toured the world, met some interesting people, and have gotten to hang out with people who are icons in multiple avenues and lanes. There's an anthropologist hidden in me somewhere that wants to learn more about people and culture and inspire them.

You do a lot of collaborations, most notable is the one with Big K.R.I.T. How was it working with him?
K.R.I.T., man. Before we started making music, he reached out to say he respects what I do and appreciates me. That said a lot. Outside of that, his honesty and transparency marks him. He's not afraid to say he doesn't have it all together, that he may be confused about some things, that he may be conflicted. I think that's the average, normal person, and that's what people enjoy about him.

What are your thoughts on those who will wonder about your collaborations that are with artists outside Christian music?
The beauty of it is, is it's not a sermon, it's not 'Hey, K.R.I.T., come up to the pulpit and say something.' It's a confession. I would hope that every Christian would want to have relationships with people who would want to be open and transparent and that you'd want to help them. It just so happens ours is a song.

Given the recent controversy surrounding Meek Mill and Philadelphia pastor, Jomo K. Johnson, what is your view on mainstream rappers using words that have a spiritual representation in your faith, such as"amen" and "hallelujah" ?
It's going to sound funny, but it doesn't bother me if a person doesn't understand the root or the base meaning of something, or if they don't value that thing to speak about it. It's almost like being mad at a blind person for bumping into you. You don't get mad at the blind person for bumping into you, you show them where the seat is, so I'm more interesting in helping people understand what those terms mean verses getting mad at its misuse. It doesn't bother me. It just shows me that I need to be here doing what I'm doing.

Everyone seems to believe being “natural”, i.e. ceasing usage of chemical products, is a fad that will eventually blow away with the wind. While that assumption may be true, there are good reasons to stop using perm, better known as “creamy crack”, and other harmful chemicals often used on African American women’s hair.

Below are 3 reasons why you should strongly consider being natural.

1. Your Health

According to New America Media, the chemicals found in common African-American hair products are known as estrogen and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Although extensive research is ongoing, many of these chemicals are believed to be linked to reproductive effects and birth defects, breast cancer, heart disease, cognitive disorders, premature puberty and altered immune function, to name a few.

Folks love to complain about Tyler Perry movies, but what are they actually doing about it? Meaning, when there are other black film options available , do black people support them or ignore them? Well, now’s the time to either put up or shut up, because there are some superb black movies on the horizon that offer a stark contrast to Tyler Perry’s Madea.

Remember Ava DuVernay? DuVernay won the Best Director award at the Sundance Film Festival for her drama ‘Middle Of Nowhere’, making her the first black woman to win the much coveted honor. In an interview with the Sundance Project 2012, DuVernay said her film was,” a story about a woman named Ruby who has lost her husband to incarceration.”

Here’s a quick synopsis about the film:
