Depicting life in a post-apocalyptic world of staged fights and gritty open-market swap meets, Pure Flix Entertainment brought the lights, camera and action to the "Town Without a Frown."
Bradley Dorsey, producer of the Christian film "Revelation Road 3: The Black Rider," was in search for the perfect small-town USA location for the third installment of the series when he realized he didn't need to look much further than his old stomping grounds.
"Happy has been absolutely wonderful to us," Dorsey said. "I'm originally from Amarillo, and we had already chosen a town near here to use, but when we drove through Happy and down Main Street, I thought, 'This is it. We are totally switching everything, and we're shooting in Happy.'"
Along with filmmakers from Hollywood came well-known faces such as James Denton from "Desperate Housewives," Kevin Sorbo, who played the title character in "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys," Robert Gossett from "The Closer" and David A.R. White, who stars as the male lead in the first two films and serves as the head of development.
But big names and a flashy film aren't the only things Dorsey and the production company hope to provide viewers.
"We started in 2005 with the idea to basically bring the gospel through a network of movies," said Russell Wolfe, CEO of Pure Flix Entertainment. "I think it is just one of the most powerful ways to get that message out there. We shoot about six to eight movies a year and we have been working with Brad quite a bit."
The values and spirit of Texas Panhandle people are some of the reasons Dorsey said he was excited to bring the film back home.
"That's one of the great things about coming back here," he said. "In Los Angeles, it's just a very different environment; it's a great place, but Hollywood in general is very mainstream and secular and doesn't have the same views as people in Amarillo.
"It's been great coming back here and people appreciating that it's a Christian film."
