Daily Devotional: Comfort Multiplied | 2 Corinthians 1:3–5

What do you do when you're hurting or have just had a bad day? Maybe you've lost a job or were let down by a loved one. We all have our quick fix solutions to feel better. for me, I often reach for a specialty coffee or dark chocolate peanut butter cups. but if i'm honest, these quick fixes only hide the pain.

so where does real comfort come from? Paul told the Christians in Corinth to expect pain, and described all the trouble he found in Asia when he traveled there as a missionary. He then acknowledged the suffering the Corinthians experienced and wrote, "we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ." When the Christians in Corinth chose to follow jesus, they were walking in his steps. Steps that pointed Jesus straight to both suffering and death on a cross. But those sufferings did not go unaddressed for the christians in Corinth, and they don't go unaddressed for us either. God knows when we're in pain, and comforts us in our troubles.

God uses lots of ways to comfort us. Through prayer and devotions; through a good laugh with a friend; through a beautiful sunset. All of these are possible because of Jesus's love for us. He suffered and died so that we can find comfort in his saving grace but it doesn't just stop with God's comforting presence in our lives. Paul suggests that God's comfort is multiplied to others through us.

When God comforts us, it radiates from us to others who are hurting, Just like God's love of his only son, Jesus, radiates from Christ to us. God is the father of all compassion, and he sees your pain and offers his presence to comfort you. May you enjoy god's comforting presence, and then become that comforting presence to someone else.
