Daily Devotional: Am I Good Enough? | Matthew 11:28 |

How hard do we have to work to be good enough? That question became even more real october 29th, 1929. It was in the midst of the roaring twenties, a time of unprecedented wealth and prosperity and confidence about america's ability to build wealth and power. In a instant, millions of americans lost everything, their jobs, their money, the stock market had crashed, starting what now is known as the great depression.  There's an account in the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus meets this rich young man.

The young man asks jesus,

"good teacher, what must I do to gain eternal life?"

He goes right to the heart of the issue, which is this guy's love for money, and he says,

"if you really wanna be good on your terms, sell everything you own, give it to the poor, and come follow me." the rich young ruler went away sad.

Now, this guy had everything, he had the status, he had the success, he had the "likes". and so jesus' followers, they were blown away, right?

He was the epitome of what it meant to be successful and good enough. So they asked Jesus, "well if he can't make it, "if he's not, can anybody?" you see, the reality is that none of us on our own is good enough, which is why Matthew 11:28 is such a beautiful passage. he says,

"come, all you who are weary and burdened, and you will find rest.”

I will give you rest. Instead of the great depression, Jesus gives us the great invitation. the beautiful thing is that when we rest in the fact that we don't have to be good enough, but that Jesus Christ was good enough for us, then we can find rest for our souls.
