Fans boo players who took a knee before Dallas vs. Nashville in MLS
There was a smattering of boos when players from FC Dallas and Nashville SC collectively took a knee during the national anthem before their Major League Soccer game on Wednesday in Frisco, Texas.
Dallas defender Reggie Cannon said he was disgusted by the boos at Toyota Stadium when players and officials knelt to call attention to racial injustice. He said teammate Ryan Hollingshead turned to him afterwards and said he was sorry. "You can't even have support from your own fans in your own stadium," Cannon said. "It's baffling to me.
"As a team we try to give the best possible product on the field and these last six months have been
Billie Jean King on her journey for equal rights in tennis, life: ‘No one ever has it easy’
Billie Jean King knew Bobby Riggs was tired. She had been running him all over the court.
It was Sept. 20, 1973, and this was the "Battle of the Sexes," a tennis match that was about far more than tennis. It was about proving the value of women tennis players, who had been fighting for equal pay and opportunities.
The frenzied buildup – the interviews, the speculation, the hype – had also turned it into a symbolic match about the value of women, period. Ninety million people tuned in worldwide to watch self-described male chauvinist Riggs play equal-rights advocate King in the Houston Astrodome.
Before the match, he gave her a Sugar Daddy sucker. She gave him a pig. King did not want to set back women's sports and women's rights. She had to win.
They were playing best of five sets. She was up two and it was match point in the third. She had already hit a match point into the net. This time, she aimed high so it would surely go over and he'd have to try to hit it. But he was so tired, his return went into the net. She'd won.
He jumped over the net to shake her hand and said, "I really underestimated you."
Many people view Giannis Antetokounmpo as worthy of winning his second straight NBA MVP award, but ESPN reporter Ramona Shelburne says she voted for LeBron James instead.
Why did Shelburne vote for James? She shared her reason during a Tuesday appearance on ESPN’s “The Jump.”
“I did not vote for [Giannis Antetokounmpo] for MVP. I voted for LeBron James because I tend to be more of a narrative-based voter. I feel like LeBron James took a Lakers team that had missed the playoffs six years in a row up to the stop spot in the West after all the dysfunction the summer before. So I think he gets credit for that as well,” Shelburne explained.
Moments after her dominant first-round win over former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka at the Top Seed Open on Tuesday, Venus Williams could barely contain her excitement during her on-court interview.
After thanking the healthcare workers and the WTA, reflecting on what it was like to be back on court and saying hi to her parents and sisters, she finally got around to what everyone was already thinking about: her second-round showdown with sister Serena Williams.
"It's so special," the seven-time major winner said. "Who would have guessed that this draw would have happened playing two former world No. 1s and Grand Slam champions in the first round in the middle of Kentucky? But this is what it is and these are great tests for me coming into the season and I know that I'm hitting the ball well. ... I know Serena came back from the brink and waited until the last minute to play her best tennis and that's what champions are made of.
