Pastor Kenneth McNeil showed up to work late Tuesday morning and immediately noticed the doors at the McLennan County church hall had been damaged.

Inside, as the Waco Tribune-Herald reported, McNeil found much worse: A swastika and other Nazi symbolism, along with the words “Satan” and “Trump,” scrawled in mustard and ketchup on the walls of Willow Grove Baptist Church’s fellowship hall.

“We are determined not to allow that fear and that hate to win,” McNeil told the newspaper. “We keep going and keep loving on folks and keep offering that forgiveness and that hope that people are looking for.”

Former slaves A.J. Crawford and Buck Manning founded the mostly black church in 1871, naming it after the willow branches in the area, which sits just west of Waco. The church has about 30 members.

The fellowship hall is where the church holds its Bible studies, Sunday classes and community gatherings. In addition to the Nazi graffiti, McNeil found a secretary’s office looted and the choir room and hallway littered with bleach — in all, about $3,000 in damage.

Authorities said they have no suspects or motive for the vandalism.
