According to Ward, she had gone to the local Baton Rouge bar with a few of her friends on November 17th, and was quickly offended with what she alleges was an intentional racial slur stamped onto her hand, “The bar stamped our hands at the door, and shortly after I noticed that the stamp spelled n-gger backwards. I immediately showed my friends,” Ward told Clutch.
The stamp, which reads “Reggin’”, was interpreted by Ward as a racial slur, so Ward brought it the attention of a manager, who reportedly, was not sympathetic, “It’s just a stamp”, he allegedly told her. The manager, who has refused to give his name, explained the origin and meaning of the stamp to LSU’s student paper, The Daily Reveille, stating that the stamp had been in use every week for the last ten years and was created as a result of people saying they were going “Reggin’” when frequenting the establishment.
Though Ward was only one of a mixed crowd of people who all bore the same stamp, she insisted that the stamp was designed with racism in mind, “I was really shocked,” Ward told Clutch. “What upset me the most is that it was blatantly disrespectful and it was obvious that the design of the stamp was intentional.”
This wouldn’t be the first time Reggie’s, which proudly displays a Confederate flag in its window, has undergone scrutiny for its alleged racist bent. Earlier in the month, The Daily Reveille published an article in which a student alleged that the bar had turned him away because of his shoes.
