WATCH: President Obama's Proclamation for the National Day of Prayer

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER, 2012

- - - - - - -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION

Prayer has always been a part of the American story, and today countless Americans rely on prayer for comfort, direction, and strength, praying not only for themselves, but for their communities, their country, and the world.
On this National Day of Prayer, we give thanks for our democracy that respects the beliefs and protects the religious freedom of all people to pray, worship, or abstain according to the dictates of their conscience. Let us pray for all the citizens of our great Nation, particularly those who are sick, mourning, or without hope, and ask God for the sustenance to meet the challenges we face as a Nation. May we embrace the responsibility we have to each other, and rely on the better angels of our nature in service to one another. Let us be humble in our convictions, and courageous in our virtue. Let us pray for those who are suffering around the world, and let us be open to opportunities to ease that suffering.
Let us also pay tribute to the men and women of our Armed Forces who have answered our country's call to serve with honor in the pursuit of peace. Our grateful Nation is humbled by the sacrifices made to protect and defend our security and freedom. Let us pray for the continued strength and safety of our service members and their families. While we pause to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending liberty, let us remember and lend our voices to the principles for which they fought -- unity, human dignity, and the pursuit of justice.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 3, 2012, as a National Day of Prayer. I invite all citizens of our Nation, as their own faith directs them, to join me in giving thanks for the many blessings we enjoy, and I call upon individuals of all faiths to pray for guidance, grace, and protection for our great Nation as we address the challenges of our time.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth.
BARACK OBAMA

Hundreds of Texans are expected to come to downtown Dallas Thursday for an eight-hour string of faith-based celebrations that will include Sikh drummers, Islamic prayers, Hindu singers, a Jewish cantor and Methodist and Baptist congregations.

It may sound like a standard interfaith event, another of the many that have become popular in increasingly diverse American cities, but the revelry at the the city's Thanks-Giving Square in observance of the National Day of Prayer is unique in how far it's departed from its Protestant roots.
The National Day of Prayer, which has been observed on the first Thursday in May for 24 years, is still a largely Christian event, in which millions of Americans from thousands of churches across the country will participate, bowing their heads to God in prayer on the day that traces its history to the nation's earliest years. There will be Bible read-a-thons in front of city halls, police officers will pay tribute to the nation's first-responders at churches, and the devout will descend upon courthouse steps across American cities to grace the buildings with prayer.
But the event, designated via presidential proclamation, has increasingly faced accusations of encouraging an uncomfortable mingling of church and state and being too narrowly focused in practice on Christianity.
On one side, secular humanists and atheists have responded by promoting their own event, Thursday's National Day of Reason. Now in its ninth year, the nonreligious celebration has expanded to more than a dozen cities, where it's observed with blood drives, training on pro-secular policy lobbying and voter registration drives, as well as social events.
On the other hand, believers such as those in Dallas have tried to change the day's legacy by broadening its appeal. The Thanks-Giving Foundation, which typically observes the National Day of Prayer with an interfaith breakfast or luncheon, has made this year's event into a day-long festival, where more than half the events are purposefully devoted to non-Christians.
"We believe in the idea that gratitude is something that all faith traditions and all cultures value," said Chris Slaughter, a Christian Scientist who is president of the Thanks-Giving Foundation, which will be celebrating its 30th National Day of Prayer. "It can be used as a beginning point of conversation to learn about each other to gain respect and understanding."

A divorce attorney for the estranged wife of Deion Sanders has called her recent arrest following accusations that she attacked the Hall of Fame cornerback "a complete setup."

Pilar Sanders was arrested April 23 at the couple's home in Prosper, north of Dallas. Deion Sanders filed for divorce in December, but the pair still shared the home until the woman's arrest.
The former NFL star and Pilar Sanders were in a Collin County court Thursday for a hearing in the divorce case. Both want custody of their three children.
Larry Friedman, an attorney for Pilar Sanders, accused her husband of repeatedly calling Prosper police until they arrested her.
Rick Robertson, Deion Sanders' attorney, said Pilar Sanders wasn't fit to have custody of the children.

sarah-henson-family-2012-240x340.jpg
Sarah Henson is the type of woman who makes you feel like you really can do it all and still end the day with a big smile on your face. By day she leads the Women's Ministry at The Potter's House of Dallas, her parents' Bishop T.D. Jakes and Serita Jakes famous mega church with over 30,000 members. In the evenings she's a devoted wife to NFL linebacker Robert Henson, a proud mother of two and an inspirational blogger. Henson became a mom at 14, and despite what many expected back then, has since turned her story into one of success and triumph.

"You learn so much about marriage once you're married, and it's just about applying it," says Henson, who sat down with us to talk about share her secrets to balancing faith, marriage and motherhood.

ESSENCE.COM: How do you and your husband juggle your careers and parenting duties?
HENSON: It's important that we always have someone that's at home creating that foundation and consistency for the children. My son is 9 and my daughter is 2. The twos haven't been "terrible," but she has way too much to say -- way too much. (Laughs)

ESSENCE.COM: What are some of the strengths within your marriage?
HENSON: I think one of our biggest strengths is really being able to laugh and play with one another, because life is so hard and you have to. My husband is in the football world, which is so cutthroat and serious. There are so many injuries. And in ministry, especially on this scale, there's a lot of criticism and a lot of people who won't always be happy for you. Sometimes you just need to be able to laugh with one another. So, whether it's him tickling me, or me making fun of his socks not matching -- whatever -- we find something to laugh about every day and that translates with our children. I'm proud to say that my children are happy children and that means a lot to me. They still have their innocence. At the end of the day, we're all just little girls and little boys trying to make it in this world. Sometimes we just need to be able to look at someone and say, "I love you, and I want to laugh with you. I see that little person in you and I'm committed to bringing out all of the great things inside of you."

4798This is Part II in a day-long series on Louis Farrakhan's 2012 Address to his Nation of Islam followers.

According to Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan:
  • America is a part of a "Synagogue of Satan"
  • Obama is the spokesperson for this "Synagogue of Satan" and does its bidding
  • Obama was "really not in favor of the attack on Gaddafi"
  • Colin Powell was "a black man in front of a policy to kill black people"
  • Obama & Powell want a "pat on the back" from their "former slave-masters and their children"
  • There are "bombs coming" America's way that are self-inflicted, given the country's foreign policy
  • Serving in America's military is "fighting for the enemy"
  • America's wars are "engineered by Zionists who love Israel more than America"
  • Speech was given at the United Center in Chicago on February 23, 2012
  • Part of ongoing Blaze/ GBTV Investigation into Farrakhan's rhetoric & influence
Anti-Semitism, anti-Americanism, anti-military.
These are just a handful of themes that can be found in Minister Louis Farrakhan's recent address to a packed United Center in Chicago, where thousands of followers of the Nation of Islam were gathered to attend the Saviours' Day Convention, which marked the 82nd year of the Nation of Islam's existence.
The Nation of Islam leader began his remarks by asserting that Obama was at war with Iran and with himself. And he also resurrected an oft-used phrase to blast the United States: the "synagogue of Satan." It's a term he's used before -- in fact, he recently said Glenn Beck was a "minion" of it. According to his website, the phrase "is a gathering of persons of like mind and spirit who are in opposition to the will of God." In the past, he's also used it to refer to Israel.

hcsp.jpgMichael Jordan's No. 23 has long been synonymous with greatness. Now that number has a completely different meaning for him.

As Jordan watched from his luxury box, his Charlotte Bobcats were dealt their 23rd consecutive loss Thursday night 104-84 to New York Knicks and finished the shrunken season with the worst winning percentage in NBA history (.106). That means the man recognized globally as the greatest basketball player ever is the not-so-proud owner of the worst NBA team ever.
A spectacular resume that includes six NBA championships and five league MVP awards would also include one very forgettable season for the record book.
It had been 39 years since an NBA team finished with a worse winning percentage than the Bobcats. In a full season, the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers finished 9-73 (.110).
In this lockout-shortened regular season, the Bobcats finished a woeful 7-59 -- and they are every bit as bad as the numbers indicate.
They're last in league scoring and shooting percentage. They lost 22 games by 20 points or more. It's hard to decide what's worse, their offense or their defense.
This year's Bobcats were everything Jordan wasn't as a player -- unproductive, uncompetitive and unwatchable.
Jordan told the Charlotte Observer on Wednesday that he knew this was going to be a trying year, but didn't expect it would be this bad.
"But did we want to chase the most pingpong balls (in the May 30 draft lottery)? No way," Jordan told the newspaper. "Ever since I've owned the team I think we've made some very positive moves on the business side. We had to make a difficult decision to turn over the talent. This year the talent we had didn't respond, but that doesn't cause me to turn my back on the plan."
While Jordan was sticking to his plan, the Bobcats were painful to watch.
No one on the roster comes close to having Jordan's charisma -- not to mention his ability to dominate. They lack a face for the franchise, at least on the court.
And all that's on Jordan.
His reputation as an executive continues to take hit after hit, just the way he used to make game-winning shot after shot.
Jordan's questionable decision-making has landed the Hall of Famer at the center of a debate about which former star turned NBA executive has done the worst job.
Jordan spent a season-and-a-half in Washington as team president and later as a part-time player. And while the Wizards were attractive at the box office, they were horrible as a team, and owner Abe Pollin ultimately fired Jordan.
Jordan was criticized for trading Juwan Howard and Richard Hamilton, drafting Kwame Brown with the No. 1 overall pick and signing Larry Hughes to a big contract. He resurfaced as a minority owner with the Bobcats in 2006 and assumed control of basketball decisions under the watch of former team owner Bob Johnson.
Yet poor personnel decisions continued to plague him.
The Bobcats swung and missed on draft picks Adam Morrison and Alexis Ajinca. They traded away a first-round pick to get Tyrus Thomas, who's been a flop and is still owed $26 million over the next three seasons.
The Bobcats managed to reach the playoffs two years ago under Jordan -- who became majority owner in March 2010 -- but after being swept in four games by the Orlando Magic he decided to blow up the roster and start over.
The top six players from that team -- Stephen Jackson (San Antonio), Gerald Wallace (New Jersey), Raymond Felton (Portland), Boris Diaw (San Antonio), Nazr Mohammed (Oklahoma City) and Tyson Chandler (New York) -- have been either traded or waived.
"We were vying for that eighth and ninth spot and we looked at that and said, 'How can we get to be one of those one, two, three or four teams?'" Jordan said in December. "To do that, you have to grab assets and that's what we did. We had to create flexibility."
At the time, Jordan asked fans to be patient, knowing it would take time to reload, but even he couldn't have imagined this big of a mess.
"I think this is not a wasted season because who knows how good we can be?" Jordan said before it started. "We've got some good pieces that can help us get to the playoffs. I'm not waiting until next year. I think we have a good quality basketball team this year."
The won-lost column says otherwise.
Jordan led the Bulls to an NBA-record 72 wins during the 1995-96 regular season. Meanwhile, the Bobcats are 185-290 in six seasons under Jordan and have only made the postseason once. They've never won a playoff game.
Charlotte became the butt of jokes this season.
"It has been tough, but we are just trying to move forward," guard D.J. Augustin said before Thursday's loss. "Many people are laughing at us and making (the losing streak) as a joke, but we take it very seriously. We are just trying to stay positive and play hard until the end."
Even Jordan's friends and colleagues have been critical of his job performance.
"I think the biggest problem has been I don't know if he has hired enough people around him who he will listen to," NBA analyst Charles Barkley said during a radio interview on ESPN. "One thing about being famous is the people around you. You pay all their bills so they very rarely disagree with you because they want you to pick up the check. They want to fly around on your private jet so they never disagree with you. I don't think Michael has hired enough people around him who will disagree."
One thing everyone can agree on: This was not a season to remember.

hcsp.jpgOprah Winfrey got her network execs to buy a homeless man dinner at posh Los Angeles restaurant Scarpetta.

The media mogul joined four OWN executives on the patio at chef Scott Conant's Beverly Hills hotspot and enjoyed a five-course meal.
Winfrey was overheard saying, "I wish I could green-light everything."
Spies said a passerby then approached, pleading, "Oprah, can you help a homeless guy get a bowl of soup, please?"
She responded, "Please, can we get him some money, get him a meal."
The homeless guy introduced himself as Eddie, and Oprah said, "God bless you, Eddie."
One of her companions handed him a wad of cash, and staff brought him a feast.

hcsp.jpgLisa Thomas is an accomplished concert pianist. She's played for President Bush and other dignitaries.

For nine years, she's taught piano lessons to Deion and Pilar Sanders' three children. On Monday, she was at the home, about to teach a lesson.
"I heard glass breaking, and Deion was shouting at the top of his lungs, over and over again, 'Get out of my house, get out of my house!'" Thomas said.
She said at the time there was only one child in the home, the couple's oldest son. She said he got scared.
"He kept saying, 'Please don't stay. I don't want you to hear this,'" Thomas said.
Thomas said she made her way out of the house, and as she was leaving the police arrived.
She describes them as being aggressive with Pilar.
"That's what I found strange," Thomas said. "They hadn't even interviewed them, and they were pushing her out like she was some criminal, and they said, 'You stay outside,' and just said, 'Do not come back in this house.'"
She said Deion Sanders was treated nicely.
Thomas said she was stunned to learn Pilar Sanders was arrested.
"I was flabbergasted," she said. "This can not be right. It's not right. It's so wrong. Now way she deserved to go to jail."
She said Prosper police officers didn't take her statement. In fact, she says she called them the next day to give her account.

oprah-winfrey-CHRISTIAN.jpg
Although she's created a firestorm among believers in the past by suggesting that Jesus is not the only way, Oprah Winfrey is now boldly confessing Christ.
Twice during her "Oprah's Lifeclass: The Tour" broadcast on Monday, Winfrey aligned herself with Christianity. Winfrey started by introducing the show to her Radio City Music Hall audience. The theme: "Spiritual Solutions." The teacher: New Age guru Deepak Chopra.
"I am not talking about religion. I am a Christian. That is my faith. I'm not asking you to be a Christian. If you want to be one I can show you how. But it is not required. I have respect for all faiths. All faiths. But what I'm talking about is not faith or religion. I'm talking about spirituality," Winfrey said.
Winfrey said her definition of spirituality is living life with an open heart, through love, and allowing yourself to align with the values of tolerance, acceptance, of harmony, of cooperation and reverence for life. She said she believes there is a divine thread that connects spiritually to something greater than ourselves.
"My favorite Bible verse--because I am Christian--is Acts 17:28. It says, 'In God I live and move and have my being'," Winfrey said. "And you want to know why I'm so successful? Because I knew that at 4 years-old ... I wouldn't be who I am today without a spiritual consciousness, without spiritual values and ultimately without spiritual love."

five-year-engagement-movie-REVIEW.jpg

Release Date: April 27, 2012
Rating: R (for sexual content, and language throughout)
Genre: Comedy, Romance
Run Time: 124 min.
Director: Nicholas Stoller
Actors: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following review contains discussion of mature subject matter and is not suitable for young readers. Parents please be advised.
Before getting into the plot, the acting, and so on, there is something you should know up front: when you see the words "this film is rated R for sexual content and language throughout," they are not kidding.
Is it a funny movie? In many places, yes, it is absolutely hilarious. Does it have some sweet, romantic moments? Indeed it does, the kind that make you go "Awwwww." But if you consider profanity, ongoing conversations about sex, and several scenes that are just this side of pornography to be unacceptable viewing, you don't need to read any further: this film is not for you.
It starts so well, too, with an adorable proposal scene complete with fireworks and a killer view of San Francisco. Tom (Jason Segel, The Muppets) and Violet (Emily Blunt, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) seem to be the perfect couple, headed toward the perfect wedding and perfect life. Sure, there's a little hiccup when Tom's goofy best friend Alex (Chris Pratt,Moneyball) knocks up Violet's sister, Suzie (Alison Brie, Scream 4), but once those two are married there's nothing to stand in between our heroes and wedded bliss. Tom, a sous chef in a top San Fran restaurant, is headed toward culinary stardom; Violet will soon be accepted into a local program and become a respected psychologist.
Except she doesn't. Her offer is for a two-year program at the University of Michigan. Tom gives up his career to go with her (it's just two years; he can cook anywhere) and suddenly finds himself irrelevant. Most romantic comedy plots hinge on some kind of communication breakdown and this is no exception. Tom feels emasculated by his new life in Michigan but he refuses to admit there's a problem, taking out his aggression on not-very-realistic-looking deer (in hunting season).

rapper-lecrae-FATHERLESSNESS.jpg

The 32-year-old Christian rapper says biblical manhood is the key to stopping fatherlessness in Atlanta and beyond.
"Be the last of a dying breed, it's time that we man up." That's the last line of the new "Man Up Anthem" from Christian rap group 116 Clique. The song is just one sliver of a growing campaign launched last year by rapper Lecrae, 32, and his Reach Records in Atlanta, to get young men in hip-hop culture to "man up" into responsible husbands and fathers across the country.
Lecrae, whose outspoken faith and creative rhymes have gained the attention of John Piperand BET alike, has skyrocketing album sales for a Christian hip-hop artist, landing on Billboard's top 200 and independent album charts. But the Houston native is determined to steward his recent fame to address chronic social ills affecting communities nationwide, one man at a time.
"Everybody on staff at ReachLife [Ministries] and the artists at Reach Records realized that biblical masculinity was one of the things lacking in culture, specifically urban culture," said Lecrae in a recent phone interview with Christianity Today. The Man Up Campaign--including a film, concert series, album, and curriculum for church and small group use--was born out of this deep need for a godly model of manhood, as well as Lecrae's own story.

4798Community members and celebrities gathered at a Jefferson Park church Thursday to rally against racial profiling and to support slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin.

The rally, held at West Angeles Church of God in Christ, was attended by family members of 17-year-old Trayvon, who was shot and killed by neighborhood watch commander George Zimmerman in February while walking home form a convenience store.
"I believe in God," Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said at the rally, according to KTLA-TV. "I believe that justice will be served."
The Rev. Jesse Jackson and comedian Paul Rodriguez also attended.
"What kind of nation are we living in if we can put a black man in the White House but we can't walk a black teenager through gated community in Sanford, Florida?" Jackson asked.
He told the crowd that there were similar cases across the country. The Martin case has drawn intense media attention with many criticizing the way police handled it.
Zimmerman, who has said he killed Trayvon in self-defense, was not arrested after being questioned by police the night of the shooting. He was arrested weeks later and charged with second-degree murder after a special prosecutor was assigned to the case.

The conference is scheduled from 8:30-11:45 a.m. Monday, June 18, in Hall B-1 of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. There is no cost for the event and registration is not required. Women who serve in any facet of local church leadership, missions and denominational work are invited to attend.
Tebow, mother of NFL quarterback Tim Tebow, is a former missionary to the Philippines and the wife of an evangelist. She and her husband Bob have five children and four grandchildren. The notoriety of the Tebow family increased when Tim, their youngest son, won the Heisman Trophy following his sophomore football season with the Florida Gators. Because ESPN aired the portion of an interview with Pam that focused on her refusal to abort "Timmy" when she was advised to do so, she has gained a national platform for the pro-life message.
Elliff spends much of her time traveling with her husband Tom, who serves as president of the International Mission Board. The Elliffs served as Southern Baptist missionaries to Zimbabwe in the early 1980s. He also pastored churches in Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas. Eleven of their 25 grandchildren live overseas.
Music will be led by Eric and Kristin Yeldell of Naples, Fla. He serves as associate pastor of contemporary worship and ministries and they are parents to three preschoolers.

The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet has conquered over half of the Android market, according to new data collected by the research firm known as ComScore.

The wildly popular tablet accounts for 54.4 percent of the total Android market as of the end of this month.
The Kindle Fire has only been available for six months and it has already blown past high-end Android tablets such as Samsung's Galaxy Tab series that owns 15.4 percent of the market.
Motorola's XOOM line and the ASUS Transformer line together only account for about 14 percent of the Android market.
Amazon offered a cheap alternative to those looking for a tablet. Apple opened up the tablet market by releasing its iPad back in 2010, but the device was not cost effective. However, Apple products seem to sell despite their price tags. The company did not see any real competition until the end of last year when Amazon launched the cost effective Kindle Fire tablet.
The device retails at just $199, while the cheapest version of the iPad costs around $399.

Nintendo Wii U Will Support Android

Many are waiting for the arrival of Nintendo’s next generation console, the Wii U and while we wait for its official launch, it seems that additional information about this game console has come to light. Intererstingly enough, it would seem that Nintendo’s console will support Google’s Android operating system from the day that it launches.

This is not unusual to see, we’ve seen other companies make use of Android apps as well in the past. Take for instance, Research In Motion who tried to make their BlackBerry devices more alluring by integrating Android so that Android apps could be used easier. In the case of Nintendo however, it appears that they are going a step further by including Android in their consoles where it will run side by side with Nintendo’s own software and interfaces.

Over the last few years, Nintendo has taken a hit in terms of its competitiveness against Microsoft and Sony. As both of these companies have seen some growth in their portable consoles, Nintendo has remained stagnant. Part of this could be attributed to their product lifecycle which has been slow in releasing new products. If Google is indeed onboard, Nintendo may have an opportunity to integrate some of Google’s other services more closely, thereby giving them a possible edge against their competitors.
