New iPad gets taken apart by ifixit

If you’re wondering what’s inside your new device, you don’t have to whip out your screwdriver and find out for yourself. The website ifixit is happy to do this for you. It has taken apart a number of iOS devices such as the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2, and now the new iPad.

Upon cracking open the new iPad, ifixit reveals a number of features that we already knew. These include the dual-core A5X chip and the tablet’s retina display. On ifixit’s model, the retina display was made by Samsung.

The iPad 2 and new iPad sport the same screen size. So you may be thinking, why not just get yourself a retina display and slap it on an iPad 2. However, ifixit reveals that both sport different display connectors, which simply means that you can’t switch displays from model to model. The teardown also reveals the tablet’s huge battery packs, which suggests longer battery life.

The new iPad is thicker and heavier compared to the iPad 2. An earlier report revealed that the iPad 2 was more susceptible to accidental damage due to its slim profile. Since the new iPad is thicker, does this mean that the new slate is more robust? This remains to be seen.
