Right now, in your mailbox, there's probably an invitation to a club, some group will be offering discounted travel or your local grocery store is offering double coupons to join. Club membership revolves around having something in common like your age or zip code. Joining a team, though, is a little different. To win the super bowl or experience success at the office teams need unique skills.
In first Corinthians we learn that Jesus is building a team. not only are you invited, you're, a vital piece to its success,
“there are many parts, but one body,”
Paul writes this in chapter 12, he's talking about the sum total of all believers in Jesus across the world. Although we're individuals who trusted christ as savior we've been inducted into a team with the rest of the people, who've believed in him.
To explain our interdependence Paul chooses the metaphor of a body. Jesus is our head, providing the power and the plan you're a limb, with a role to play that you're, uniquely equipped to accomplish you're, irreplaceable
“if the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be”
paul asks yet you can't go alone, try to run with only feet and you're in for a tough time. You need your knees pretty badly and see how far you'll get without swinging your arms
in the same way, believers in jesus around us are critical to our lives. For instance, we grow in our understanding of scripture, as we spend time with those who've been studying it for years at the end of a race when a champion hoists a trophy all eyes are drawn to their smiling face.
In the same way, when the body of christ accomplishes good things, those around us will give glory where it's deserved to our head, Jesus.
