Google apologized on Tuesday after a Washington Post reader discovered that typing “n****r house” in the global view of Google Maps returned results for the White House. If users search for “n****r king” in the Washington, D.C. view, Google Maps zooms in on the same location in what appears a racial slur directed at President Barack Obama.
The company issued a statement on Tuesday, apologizing for any offense the results may have caused, saying the company is “working to fix this issue quickly.”
The problem had not been resolved as of Wednesday morning at 11:45 a.m. EST.
Though it’s unclear whether the racist results came about because of tampering by someone outside Google, an algorithm problem, or something else, this would not be the first time Google Maps has run into trouble.
