donnie-mcclurkin-repairing-relationship-with-son-matthew450.jpg
In April 2000, Donnie McClurkin fathered a son, Matthew, now 12. Though the gospel great views having a child outside of wedlock as a "personal failure," he is on record saying, "I don't regret my son. I love him." Now McClurkin is on a mission to demonstrate that professed love by making "drastic changes" in order to be a part of the tween boy's life consistently.

In a deeply personal and revealing interview on a recent episode of TBN's Praise the Lord, McClurkin opened up about his complex relationship with his son Matthew in a way he never has. The "We Fall Down" singer is working hard to break a cycle of neglect that began with his own father. "Although my dad was in the home, he never spent time with me," he told Kirk Franklin in front of a live studio audience--a mistake he hopes not to make with Matthew.
"That's been my Herculean task now, to heal that stuff with my son and be that father," he confessed, stressing the importance of family. "Family is everything to me...everything I have hinges on my relationship with my family and the only part of my family that was broken was me and my son."
Though the successful singer and pastor of Perfecting Faith Church in Freeport, NY, who is gearing up for the 16-city King's Men tour with Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, and Israel Houghton, has supported his offspring materially, he has not provided something money can't buy, which is time.
"I'm a good supplier. I'm a good provider," McClurkin said, but, "I had to make some drastic decisions and changes just recently, just within the last month" to make Matthew a regular part of his life.
Though McClurkin praises Matthew's mother, Kim, for doing a fantastic job with the son they share, he knows she cannot fill a father's shoes.
"Now [I'm working] to relate to him every day and [things like] picking him up from school [is an adjustment]," said McClurkin, who transparently added that he is fearful of failing. "I got up in the morning and [prayed] a simple prayer," he shared. "I looked up to God and said, 'God, I'm afraid, so help me to be a good father.'"

Lecrae's been getting a lot of big game media coverage. sat down with publication giant BET to "call on Hip Hop stars to spark change in the culture" and more. Check it out:

The influence of Houston's trill sound can be seen all over today's hip hop scene. But there's another voice from the H-town that deserves the game's attention. Meet Lecrae, the God-fearing, politically aware MC, who is slowly but surely bridging the long-standing gap between hip hop and Christian music. And while his spiritually conscious bars have done a lot to set him apart from his peers, the 32-year-old is also weary of letting his faith define his music. Whether he's talking about corruption in the church, the ills of the Black community or his own struggles with right and wrong, the enlightened lyricist paints a unique portrait for hip hop fans. BET.com spoke with Lecrae about his latest project, Gravity, working with fellow Southern upstart Big K.R.I.T. and continuing to challenge hip hop's status quo.

BET.com: What was the message in naming this project Gravity

Lecrae: The title track kind of sums it up, but the idea of it all is that gravity’s just a weight that pulls everybody down. It’s the day-to-day problems. I done lost good friends and family members and there’s nothing I can do about it. I can’t stop ‘em from dying. All the murders that went down in Chicago, it’s gravity all around us. Real situations that affect us all, and most times we just try to escape these realities…instead of embracing ‘em and trying to progress. And trying to fix those circumstances and to allow them to shape us into the people we are. Without struggle there is no progress and that’s really what the album is about. It’s about building endurance and it allows you to progress.

It’s not rare to hear Big K.R.I.T. deliver introspective rhymes, but it was refreshing to hear him speak so candidly about his faith on “Mayday.”

I had heard glimpses from his former projects; you know what I’m saying? Him talking about his upbringing and it was like, "I wanna sit in my room and read my bible, but a girl is calling." Just little things I would hear in his music, I would always hear the internal battle to do what he knows is right, but just struggling with it. That’s what I always appreciated about him, that transparency. We have some mutual friends that connected us and after we connected and just come to find out he respected what I did, my music, and vice versa. So we took it from there. It was the first song I did for the album, it came out phenomenal and it kind of set the bar for the rest of the album.

You make a number of mentions of corruption in the church on this album. Why is that such an important topic to you?

I think a lot of people will second-guess me and my faith because they see corruption. It’s like, if you had a Honda and your Honda was terrible and the breaks are bad, you just say, yo, I’m never buying a Honda again. I guess that’s what happens a lot of times with people in churches that they experience a lot of the corruption. So really, I like to challenge the church on one side and say, look how many people y’all are burning and turning away, but I also like to challenge folks who are weary and say, it’s not all like that. It’s the same way they talk about hip hop. They say, aw, all hip hop is negative, it’s all misogynistic and violent and drug-oriented, and that’s not all of hip hop. So I just wanted to paint a different picture of the church and at the same time challenge the church to take responsibility.

What message are you giving listeners on “Confe$$ions?”
“Confessions” is just the idea that money makes everything better. Diddy and Biggie [Notorious B.I.G.] said it a long time ago, "mo money, mo problems," and money does not erase your problems. I think a lot of people feel like that, and that’s the message that’s being perpetuated in music and different lifestyles, is that money ultimately eliminates all problems but that’s just a false perspective. There’s been plenty of recent events to prove that money does not solve all problems.…

That concept definitely challenges hip hop’s status quo. Why is materialism such a major issue in our culture?

What people tend to do is embellish or glorify things that only really have a glimmer or an inkling of the real picture that’s being painted. And money is a good thing, it’s a good thing that can help people, that can change circumstances. But money is not an ultimate thing. It does not bring you ultimate satisfaction and I think that’s irresponsible within hip hop for us to portray it as this ultimate. It’s the same issues that people have with the church. You’re telling people if they come to Jesus they gon’ be a millionaire. But that’s the same thing we doing. We’re making it seem like all you need to do is get this bread and everything’s gonna be OK. People sign their lives away for those contracts and then they looking crazy for the rest of their life. They don’t know how to invest, they don’t know how to.

You quote OutKast and warn listeners that you’re gonna “take them deep,” meaning into deep topics and subject matter. Do you want people to identify you only by your heavier topics or do you also feel you have feel-good music.

I think I offer some fun stuff, some good party music as well. I don’t mind showing that side as well but I think that there’s an over-saturation as it is. So I’m really just trying to bring a little balance. It’s almost like during a war, if it’s war time, absolutely it’s OK to have fun. But it’s not time for fun right now, it’s time to fight. So when I’m on the battlefield, I’m not worried about trying to have a good time, I’m trying to fight, I’m trying to stay alive. Right now there is a war going on and some of the biggest people who could affect change are not doing it. With all those murders in Chicago, why don’t we have songs that are being played that dissuade us from that type of lifestyle? Why don’t we have that?

Although Samsung recently made a substantial financial loss after being ordered to pay a billion dollars to Apple in U.S. courts, the Korean manufacturer appears to be conducting business as usual after the unveiling a number of impressive devices at the IFA show. One of these is the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, a follow-up to the popular Galaxy Note.

Samsung has not yet confirmed the details as to when the Galaxy Note two will be launched, but international availability before the end of the year looks highly likely. If the launch of the original Galaxy Note is anything to go by, we can expect to see the device hit European, Asian and Middle Eastern markets way before the U.S. market. In the case of the original Galaxy Note, it was launched in the U.S. in February 2012, despite having been available since October 2011 in Germany.

Although no official launch date has been released, a number of UK networks have already made clear their intentions regarding the device. O2 and 3 have already stated that they will be carrying the device, and Everything Everywhere (a T-Mobile and Orange collaboration) has stated that they currently do not have any information regarding the Galaxy Note 2. Vodafone on the other hand has categorically stated that it has ‘no involvement with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2′.

So what features can expect to see in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2? As this is a follow up to the original Galaxy Note, we can of course expect to see a larger screen. At 5.5 inches it will be even larger than the 5.3 inch screen of its predecessor. A 1.6 GHz quad-core processor will make it one of the most powerful smartphones on the market, with more than double the processing power of the original Galaxy Note. The handset also includes an 8 megapixel camera, the latest version of the Android OS and the Galaxy Note’s trademark S-Pen, which is a stylus pen specifically optimised for the device’s larger screen.

Braxton Miller helped make Urban Meyer's first game as Ohio State coach a record-breaking romp for the Buckeyes.

Meanwhile, the new era at Penn State got off to a disappointing start thanks to another team from the state of Ohio.

In Columbus, Miller rushed for 161 yards, a record for an Ohio State quarterback, and threw for two scores and 207 yards as the 18th-ranked Buckeyes beat Miami (Ohio) 56-10.

Meyer, who won two national titles at Florida, is unbeaten in 11 openers. He had worked as a TV analyst a year ago after stepping down from the Gators job due to health and family considerations.

He was hired last November to revive the beleaguered Buckeyes.

Bill O'Brien was hired by Penn State to lead the Nittany Lions in a new direction and replace the late Joe Paterno.

Penn State had an 11-point lead at the half, but Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton accounted for three second-half touchdowns to hand O'Brien a 24-14 loss at State College, Pa.

Matt McGloin threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns guiding Penn State's new-look offense.

There were some other changes, too: players' names on the backs of the uniforms, and blue ribbons on the back of the helmets to show support for victims of child sexual abuse.

____

No. 1 USC 49, HAWAII 10

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marqise Lee caught a 75-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage and returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score, and No. 1 Southern California rolled.

Matt Barkley kicked off his Heisman Trophy campaign with 377 yards passing and four touchdowns, and Lee caught 10 passes for 197 yards for the Trojans (1-0), whose offensive stars were every bit as impressive as expected in their first game since their two-year NCAA bowl ban ended.

Silas Redd rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown on a team-leading nine carries in the Penn State transfer's debut at USC, which led 35-0 at halftime and coasted to its 15th consecutive season-opening victory.

Robert Woods caught six passes for 42 yards and two TDs, and tight end Xavier Grimble caught Barkley's final scoring throw in the fourth quarter.

____

No. 2 ALABAMA 41, No. 8 MICHIGAN 14

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — AJ McCarron threw two touchdown passes and Alabama's retooled defense showed it could still dominate.

Even after sending three starting defenders from last year's national championship team to the NFL as first-round draft picks, the Crimson Tide threw around the Wolverines while stifling and pounding dual-threat quarterback Denard Robinson.

C.J. Mosley returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown. Dee Milliner had four pass breakups and an interception in the first half that set up a score after he shoved the intended receiver to the ground on the sideline.

This certainly wasn't what Michigan expected coming off an 11-win season under first-year coach Brady Hoke that ended with the Wolverines' first BCS victory since the 1999 season.

McCarron no longer has Trent Richardson to hand off to, but T.J. Yeldon and Eddie Lacy both ran for scores.

____

NO. 3 LSU 41, NORTH TEXAS 14

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Kenny Hilliard rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns, and LSU opened its season with an easy victory.

While the heavily favored Tigers were never threatened, their performance did not always thrill a Death Valley crowd that eagerly anticipated the debut of Zach Mettenberger as starting quarterback.

Mettenberger, who was briefly sidelined by a vicious sack, was 19 of 26 for 192 yards, an interception and a touchdown. But LSU didn't really need to throw in a game decided by its overwhelming defense and a running game that accounted for 316 yards, including 123 by Alfred Blue.

Derek Thompson completed only 8 of 21 passes, but two passes were scoring strikes of 80 and 15 yards to Brelan Chancellor.

____

NO. 4 OKLAHOMA 24, UTEP 7

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Landry Jones threw two touchdown passes and Damien Williams ran 65 yards for another score in the fourth quarter, helping Oklahoma slog out a win.

Oklahoma labored in its opener, unable to generate much of a running game or get anything downfield.

Up just 10-7 in the fourth quarter, the Sooners stuffed UTEP on a fake punt to set up an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Brannon Green and Williams sealed it late with his long run.

Nathan Jeffrey ran for 177 yards and returned a blocked punt 24 yards for a touchdown for UTEP.

____

NO. 5 OREGON 57, ARKANSAS ST. 34

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Marcus Mariota made his first start, passing for 200 yards and three touchdowns in Oregon's season-opening victory over Arkansas State.

De'Anthony Thomas caught two touchdowns and ran for another while collecting 119 yards in total offense as the Ducks built a 50-10 lead by halftime.

Kenjon Barner, taking over as starter after the departure of running back LaMichael James, ran for 66 yards and two scores.

The Ducks sat most of their starters after the break.

The loss spoiled coach Gus Malzahn's first game as coach of the Red Wolves, who went 10-3 last season and won the Sun Belt Conference title.

Arkansas State senior quarterback Ryan Aplin threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns, including a 72-yard scoring pass to Julian Jones just before the half.

____

No. 6 GEORGIA 45, BUFFALO 23

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Freshman Todd Gurley ran for three touchdowns, Aaron Murray threw three scoring passes and Georgia overcame a sloppy first half.

Gurley didn't start but may have emerged as the Bulldogs' future at tailback with his eight carries for 100 yards, including scoring runs of 10 and 55 yards. He added a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Georgia, favored by 37½ points, led only 24-16 at halftime before pulling away in the season opener for both teams.

Branden Oliver, coming off his school-record 1,395 yards rushing in 2011, had 30 carries for 111 yards and a 2-yard touchdown run for the Bulls.

____

NO. 7 FLORIDA STATE 69, MURRAY STATE 3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Lonnie Pryor, James Wilder Jr., and Debrale Smiley combined for seven rushing touchdowns to lead Florida State.

Pryor ran for three TDs, and Smiley and Wilder added two apiece. Wilder finished with 106 yards rushing.

Florida State scored on their first touch of the new season on Rashad Greene's 47-yard punt return just 89 seconds into the game.

EJ Manuel passed for 188 yards and a touchdown before retiring midway in the third quarter.

Murray State's Casey Brockman passed for 117 yards, but was intercepted once and sacked six times, including four by Bjoern Werner.

The Seminoles totaled 606 yards while holding Murray State, a Football Championship Subdivision school, to 156 yards

____

No. 10 ARKANSAS 49, JACKSONVILLE STATE 24

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Tyler Wilson set the school record for yards passing in a season opener, finishing 19 of 27 passing for 367 yards and three touchdowns for Arkansas.

Two of Wilson's touchdowns went to tight end Chris Gragg, who finished with seven catches for 110 yards as the No. 10 Razorbacks (1-0) won their first game under coach John L. Smith.

Brandon Mitchell, the former backup quarterback turned starting receiver, joined in the fun with four catches for 122 yards and Javontee Herndon caught four passes for 96 yards.

The Gamecocks (0-1), coached by former Razorbacks coach Jack Crowe, led 14-7 in the first half. Marques Ivory had a pair of touchdown passes, while Alan Bonner had eight catches for 107 yards.

____

No. 11 WEST VIRGINIA 69, MARSHALL 34

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Geno Smith threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Mountaineers past Marshall.

In the final scheduled game between the state's only Bowl Subdivision teams, it marked West Virginia's highest-scoring season opener in school history.

Smith kept the momentum going from his six-TD performance from the Orange Bowl.

The senior completed 32 of 36 passes and set a school record for career completions before sitting out most of the fourth quarter

The Mountaineers compiled 655 total yards, more than any game last year, and got the balance they've sought from their running game. Shawne Alston ran for 123 yards and two scores.

No. 12 WISCONSIN 26, NORTHERN ILLINOIS 21

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Montee Ball rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown, and Wisconsin needed a big defensive play to survive a fourth-quarter scare.

Wisconsin's defense didn't allow Northern Iowa past the 50-yard line until the 4:27 mark in the third quarter — but then the Badgers nearly melted down.

Leading 26-7 in the fourth quarter, Wisconsin allowed Northern Iowa quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen to throw a pair of long touchdowns to David Johnson, cutting the lead to five. With the Panthers facing fourth-and-1 at the Wisconsin 41-yard line, defensive lineman Ethan Hemer tipped the ball at the line of scrimmage to stop the drive.

No. 14 CLEMSON 26, AUBURN 19

ATLANTA (AP) — Andre Ellington rushed for 231 yards, DeAndre Hopkins set a school record with 13 receptions and Clemson opened the season with a victory.

Playing before a 50-50 crowd at the Georgia Dome — basically halfway between the two campuses — Clemson shook off any hangover from last season's embarrassing 70-33 loss to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl and showed plenty of offense against Auburn even without star receiver Sammy Watkins, who was suspended for the first two games after an offseason drug arrest.

The second half was a battle of field goals before Tajh Boyd lofted a 4-yard touchdown pass to Hopkins, who made a brilliant, twisting catch in the corner of the end zone with 9:17 remaining.

Both teams kicked four field goals. Cody Parkey connected from 37, 46, 27 and 36 yards for Auburn, the last of them putting his team ahead with 12:50 remaining. Chandler Catanzaro was just as accurate for Clemson, booting it through from 24, 40, 37 and 18 yards.

Tre Mason led Auburn in rushing with 107 yards.

____

No. 15 TEXAS 37, WYOMING 17

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown both rushed for more than 100 yards and combined for three touchdowns to lead Texas.

Texas quarterback David Ash, who won the starting job over Case McCoy in training camp, was an efficient 20-of-27 passing for 156 yards and a touchdown to Jaxon Shipley.

Bergeron had 110 yards and scored Texas' first touchdown on a 1-yard run in first quarter. He put the game away with a 17-yard TD in the fourth. Brown ran for 105 yards for Texas (1-0).

Robert Herron had touchdown catches of 82 and 22 yards for Wyoming (0-1). Cowboys quarterback Brett Smith passed for 276 yards but threw two interceptions in the second quarter that set up Texas touchdowns.

No. 17 NEBRASKA 49, SOUTHERN MISS 20

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Taylor Martinez threw for a career-high 354 yards and matched his best with five touchdown passes to lead Nebraska.

The Huskers won their nation-leading 27th straight opener.

Nebraska played the last three quarters without Rex Burkhead. The 1,300-yard rusher last season went out with a sprained ligament in his left knee after opening the scoring with a career-long 57-yard run.

Backup Ameer Abdullah ran 15 times for 81 yards and made an acrobatic catch for an 11-yard TD.

Southern Miss backup quarterback Anthony Alford carried 15 times for 84 yards in his first college game.

No. 18 OHIO STATE 56, MIAMI, OHIO, 10

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Braxton Miller threw for two scores, including Devin Smith's highlight-reel, one-handed catch, for the Buckeyes.

The slow-starting Miller, who stutter-stepped for a 65-yard score just 17 seconds into the second half, finished 14 of 24 passing for 207 yards. He also hit Corey Brown on a 5-yard TD pass.

After Miller's long run made it 28-3, Bradley Roby recovered a high Miami punt snap in the end zone and the rout was on.

Travis Howard had two interceptions and Carlos Hyde scored on 4- and 8-yard runs for Ohio State.

No. 19 OKLAHOMA STATE 84, SAVANNAH STATE 0

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Freshman Wes Lunt completed all 11 of his passes in a brief first outing as the new starting quarterback for Oklahoma State.

The defending Big 12 champions drove for touchdowns on their first five possessions to take a 35-0 lead late in the first quarter, and then used the rest of the game as a scrimmage to get playing time for their reserves.

Joseph Randle ran for 107 yards and two TDs on just six carries and Desmond Roland added 104 yards rushing, and Jeremy Smith ran for three scores as the Cowboys opened with an all-too-easy victory after losing stars Justin Blackmon and Brandon Weeden in the first round of the NFL draft.

The lopsided result was hardly a surprise. Savannah State, one of the worst teams from a lower division, had won only four games in against Football Championship Subdivision competition in 10 years and was playing team from the FBS for the first time.

____

No. 22 KANSAS STATE 51, MISSOURI STATE 9

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Collin Klein threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns, John Hubert ran 95 yards for a fourth-quarter score and Kansas State pulled away late to beat Missouri State.

Hubert finished with 152 yards rushing, Braden Wilson and Daniel Sams added touchdown runs, and Tramaine Thompson returned a punt 89 yards for another score as the Wildcats (1-0) tuned up for next week's showdown with Miami with an impressive second-half scoring binge.

The game was tied 9-9 early in the third quarter before Kansas State piled up 42 straight points against the team picked to finish last in the Missouri Valley Conference.

____

No. 23 FLORIDA 27, BOWLING GREEN 14

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Mike Gillislee had a career-high 148 yards rushing and two touchdowns, helping Florida beat Bowling Green.

The performance was far from perfect for the Gators, who struggled part of the game on offense and failed to generate much pressure on defense. Still, it was enough for Florida to win its 23rd consecutive opener. The streak is the second longest in the nation behind Nebraska (27).

The Gators can thank Gillislee, Frankie Hammond and two missed field goals for the latest one.

Gillislee scored on runs of 15 and 38 yards in the second quarter. Hammond turned a short pass into a 50-yard score early in the fourth. Bowling Green could have had a second-half lead, but fifth-year senior Stephen Stein missed field-goal attempts of 31 and 29 yards.

Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist endorsed President Obama for reelection on Sunday, writing in a Tampa Bay Times op-ed that the president is "the right leader for our state and the nation."
"I applaud and share his vision of a future built by a strong and confident middle class in an economy that gives us the opportunity to reap prosperity through hard work and personal responsibility," Crist writes. "It is a vision of the future proven right by our history."
Crist, a former Republican who served as governor from 2007 to 2011, switched his party affiliation to Independent during a failed U.S. Senate bid. Crist lost the 2010 race to Sen. Marco Rubio.
In Sunday's op-ed, Crist went after his former party, citing Rep. Todd Akin's (R-Mo.) "legitimate rape" comments as an example of right-wing extremism.
"As Republicans gather in Tampa to nominate Mitt Romney, Americans can expect to hear tales of how President Obama has failed to work with their party or turn the economy around," Crist writes. "But an element of their party has pitched so far to the extreme right on issues important to women, immigrants, seniors and students that they've proven incapable of governing for the people. Look no further than the inclusion of the Akin amendment in the Republican Party platform, which bans abortion, even for rape victims."

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) warned on Sunday that Republicans aren't doing enough to boost their appeal to a wider swath voters, a lack of action that could damage the party in the future as demographics shift.
"This is going to be a close election, but long-term, conservative principles, if they're to be successful and implemented, there has to be a concerted effort to reach out to a much broader audience than we do today," Bush said on NBC's "Meet the Press."
Bush often sounds the alarm about GOP rhetoric and Latino voters in particular, whom he said could be turned off by the way Republicans discuss immigration and other issues. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney trails President Barack Obama by significant margins among Latino voters, the second-fastest growing population in the United States. Bush's brother, former President George W. Bush, held far better numbers with Latino voters than Romney currently does.
On Sunday, the former Florida governor did not refer to the GOP's need to appeal to any specific group, but said the party could find it seriously damaging if Republicans do not expand their base.
"I'm concerned about it over the long haul for sure," Bush told "Meet The Press" host David Gregory. "Our demographics are changing and we have to change not necessarily our core beliefs, but how we -- the tone of our message and the message and the intensity of it, for sure."

Rivers referred to Rihanna as an “idiot” for her recent admission, to Oprah Winfrey, that she still loves Chris Brown, even after he beat her until her face was black and blue.

Rivers tweeted:

“Rihanna confessed to Oprah Winfrey that she still loves Chris Brown. Idiot! Now it’s MY turn to slap her.”

Apple's swift victory in defense of its iPad and iPhone designs with a jury verdict of patent infringement against Samsung is likely to have wide-ranging effects on other device makers that run Google's popular Android operating system -- and on their customers.
It could mean higher prices for the coolest features, different choices in mobile devices, and devices that work in less familiar ways. It means Apple's rival smartphone and tablet makers, and Google, will have to scramble harder.
Nine jurors late Friday found that Samsung violated six out of seven of Apple's patents at issue. Three key patents cover familiar touch functions that allow Apple device users to easily scroll pages, zoom out on images or tap to enlarge text, all with fingers.
If Samsung does not win an appeal of the verdict, it will have to remove or work around those shortcuts, which Apple says took years to develop and three months for Samsung to copy.
If the $1.05 billion damage award survives, it will be one of the largest verdicts in patent history. Two larger verdicts were reversed, according to Stanford University law professor Mark Lemley. "It's a huge win for Apple," says Lemley. "But this is one lawsuit among 50 in the smartphone market, and Apple's real target may be the Android ecosystem."
U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh has the power to triple the damages to more than $3 billion, because Samsung's infringement was found to be willful.
"We applaud the court for finding Samsung's behavior willful and for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn't right," Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said in a statement. The quick verdict after deliberations began Wednesday was a surprise. Jurors had to answer hundreds of questions and had more than a hundred pages of instructions from the judge. It appears likely the group was able to easily grasp the hero-and-villain narrative told by Apple's lawyers and also that the Silicon Valley-based jurors were more well-versed in tech than others might be.
The judge will now consider Apple's request for injunctions that would force Samsung to pull patent-infringing products from stores, as well as whether to treble the damages. A hearing is set for Sept. 20, and Koh's rulings are expected within six to eight weeks after that.

Terrell Owens tweeted news of his release by the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The team's move signals the end of its brief experiment with the aging wide receiver.
"I'm no longer a Seahawk," Owens tweeted to his 1.3 million followers. "I THANK the organization 4 the opportunity. I'm truly blessed beyond belief. My FAITH is intact & will NOT waiver."
Owens, 38, signed with the Seahawks for the veteran's minimum earlier this month. At the time, he was thought to have a decent chance of making the team's final roster. A disastrous outing in his first preseason game quickly changed his fortunes. Owens was targeted five times in his Seahawks debut but had zero catches.
He caught two balls for 41 yards in Friday night's 44-14 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, but dropped one easy pass and appeared to quit on a deep route. Seattle's other wide-receiver gamble, Braylon Edwards, clearly outplayed Owens in both games.

A verdict was reached Friday in the epic smartphone patent infringement case involving Apple and Samsung and will be announced soon, court officials said.

The verdict in the complex case came after the nine-member jury began deliberations on Wednesday.
Apple Corp. filed its lawsuit in April 2011 and engaged legions of the country's highest-paid patent lawyers to demand $2.5 billion from its top smartphone competitor. Samsung Electronics Co. fired back with its own lawsuit seeking $399 million.
During closing arguments, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny claimed Samsung was having a "crisis of design" after the 2007 launch of the iPhone, and executives with the South Korean company were determined to illegally cash in on the success of the revolutionary device.
Samsung's lawyers countered that it was simply and legally giving consumers what they want: Smart phones with big screens. They said Samsung didn't violate any of Apple's patents and further alleged innovations claimed by Apple were actually created by other companies.
Samsung conceded that Apple makes great products but said it doesn't have a monopoly on the design of rectangle phones with rounded corners that it claimed it created.
The trial came after each side filed a blizzard of legal motions and refused advisories by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to settle the dispute out of court.
Samsung has sold 22.7 million smartphones and tablets that Apple claimed uses its technology. McElhinny said those devices accounted for $8.16 billion in sales since June 2010.
Apple and Samsung combined account for more than half of global smartphone sales.
As part of its lawsuit, Apple also demanded that Samsung pull its most popular cellphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market.
From the beginning, legal experts and Wall Street analysts viewed Samsung as the underdog in the case. Apple's headquarters is a mere 10 miles from the courthouse, and jurors were picked from the heart of Silicon Valley where Apple's late founder Steve Jobs is a revered technological pioneer.
While the legal and technological issues were complex, patent expert Alexander I. Poltorak previously said the case would likely boil down to whether jurors believe Samsung's products look and feel almost identical to Apple's iPhone and iPad.
To overcome that challenge at trial, Samsung's lawyers argued that many of Apple's claims of innovation were either obvious concepts or ideas stolen from Sony Corp. and others. Experts called that line of argument a high-risk strategy because of Apple's reputation as an innovator.
Apple's lawyers argued there is almost no difference between Samsung products and those of Apple, and presented internal Samsung documents they said showed it copied Apple designs. Samsung lawyers insisted that several other companies and inventors had previously developed much of the Apple technology at issue.
The U.S. trial is just the latest skirmish between the two tech giants over product designs. Previous legal battles were fought in Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany.
The U.S. case is one of some 50 lawsuits among myriad telecommunications companies jockeying for position in the burgeoning $219 billion market for smartphones and computer tablets.

4798Gripping his black-and-white composition notebook and worn Bible, 11-year-old Ezekiel Stoddard commands the pulpit, preaching original sermons, laying hands on the sick and speaking in tongues at his family's Maryland church.
The sixth grader, who can barely see over the lectern, says God called him to be a preacher at the tender age of 7. "I had this dream; it was God speaking to me," he told The Washington Post. "'You're going to do My work, ministering the gospel and running people right over to [Me].'"
Stoddard preaches at Fullness of Time Church in Capitol Heights, Md., most Sundays, and takes speaking engagements at youth rallies and churches throughout the state. He says his main calling is "bringing souls over to Christ," but he also has the gift of healing.
Despite controversy, Stoddard was officially ordained as an evangelical minister in May. "It doesn't matter the age that you can be licensed. It just matters ... how much word do you have and how much God has called you," he said.
His uncanny story has garnered national press attention and, with it, naysayers who say his ordination was inappropriate and that he doesn't have the life experience to qualify him to preach God's Word.
But even seasoned pastors have come to Stoddard's defense, citing that age is not a factor when determining a calling from God.
"At 11 years old, you're not going to preach experience, you're going to preach the Word," said Pastor Hercules Jones to ABC News. "Preaching the Word carries enough power in itself to do what it's supposed to do.

m96azh-b78995827z.120120822131410000grp19ssu4.2.jpgRick Warren, Saddleback Church's pastor, announced Wednesday that a civil forum planned with President Barack Obama and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney at the church has been canceled because of what Warren saw as uncivil discourse between the two campaigns.
Pictured: In August 2008, pastor Rick Warren hosted then senators Barack Obama and John McCain for his first presidential forum at Saddleback Church. The success of the forum and its reviews led Warren to consider hosting another one this week.

Pastor Rick Warren says he's canceled plans for a "civil forum" featuring the presidential candidates because their campaign is so uncivil.

Neither the Obama campaign nor the Romney campaign says their candidate had committed to appearing at the forum at Warren's Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., near Los Angeles. The forum had been planned for this week.
In an interview published Wednesday by the Orange County Register, Warren said the forum's goal was to promote civility and personal respect between people with major differences. He said that's not been the climate of the presidential campaign and that he doesn't expect that to change.
In 2008, Warren's church sponsored a forum with Obama and Republican John McCain.
Saddleback's website says that about 20,000 people attend its weekend services.

Unemployment is still above 8 percent, economists fear a double-dip recession looms and ... Nike is unveiling a $315 sneaker.

The $315 LeBron X would be Nike's most expensive ever, and will include motion sensors to measure how high users jump, according to The Wall Street Journal. Unveiled by NBA superstar LeBron James during the 2012 Olympic gold medal basketball game between the United States and Spain, it will be available to consumers with money to burn this fall.
Nike, based in Beaverton, Ore., is raising shoe and clothing prices by 5 to 10 percent, analysts told the newspaper, while labor, material and shipping costs increase. The jump in price comes after Nike's gross margins dropped to 42.8 percent from 44.3 percent in its most recent quarter ending May 31, its sixth straight year-to-year quarterly decline, the Journal reports.
The sneaker giant is well known for making pricey footwear, most notably its original Air Jordan in 1985 that retailed for $64.99 -- or $138.38 in today's dollars. A new version of that shoe is expected in December and will sell for $185, the newspaper reports.
Nike spokeswoman Mary Remuzzi told the newspaper that the company is "not arbitrarily taking up" prices.
"We are constantly looking at ways to enhance the product line with the new innovation and product attributes," Remuzzi told the Journal.
The prices of basketball shoes overall are up 9.4 percent compared with a year before as of June, according to market researcher NPD Group Inc. Adidas' iconic three-striped Superstar shoes now cost $70, or nearly 8 percent more than a year ago, the Journal reports.
