Despite a recent losing skid, the Houston Rockets still find themselves in the thick of the Western Conference playoff hunt as the Feb. 21 trading deadline approaches.

Fans are clamoring for improvements to be made to the roster. What do the Rockets need? What realistically can be expected to happen in the next four weeks?

ESPN's Chad Ford says general manager Daryl Morey will be busy in the coming weeks trying to improve the team. But being active is not the same thing as actually pulling off trades.

On the outside, it appears the best methodology for Houston is to sit tight and keep its flexibility into the offseason when it can add to the roster via free agency and not have to trade away any assets. If Morey is known for anything, it is that he is willing to sit on his assets, be patient and then pounce...

Typically, NBA referees aren't actually as terrible as they're made out to be. However, it seems as if NBA players and coaches are never allowed to criticize officials, even when they are obviously wrong.

The biggest problem with officiating in the NBA is that while it's usually just fine, the smallest decisions can impact a close game, especially if they're made late. People can see a call that could have went in either direction, latch onto it and ride out the wave of criticism until everyone else is convinced that the league has a huge officiating problem.

Generally speaking, officials can make every correct call throughout a game, but make one bad call at the end and be lambasted.

The last week in the NBA, however, has been a prime example of when officiating goes wrong, but players are still expected to keep their lips zipped in terms of officiating, while coaches can go as far as...

Xperia Tablet Z, Sony's Thinnest Tablet Yet

Sony has launched a new Android tablet called the Xperia Tablet Z. It’s an interesting time for a new tablet launch considering that the Consumer Electronics Show just wrapped up recently in Vegas and that may have been the best time to garner the most attention for their tablet. Perhaps though, Sony’s hand was somewhat forced.

President Barack Obama is set to use the Bibles of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Abraham Lincoln for his second swearing in January 21, no doubt symbolizing his pride as the nation's first Black president. The symbolic move also aligns his principles with the principles of the two most transformational leaders in American history as it relates to African-American people. Despite the noble symbolism, the country is abuzz about exactly what President Obama will do as African-Americans continue to suffer disparately. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s actual birthday was celebrated on January 15 and will be observed on the national holiday on Monday, January 21, which is also Inauguration Day. As more than a million people are expected to attend inaugural celebrations in D.C. and millions more will watch around the world, neither the President nor leading Democrats have publicly mentioned his most faithful constituents, whose votes for him surpassed 95 percent in both elections. Marc Morial, who convened a summit of African-American leaders in November and released an African-American agenda, has not spoken publicly about the agenda since then. Neither has Dr. Ron Daniels, president of the Institute of the Black World - 21st Century, who convened the State of the Black World Conference in November to discuss the state of the African-American community going into Obama's second term. Meanwhile, President Obama's cabinet picks are appearing to lack diversity. So far, the President has confirmed appointment of four of 15 new cabinet members for the next four years. None are African-American. Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), who replaced Congressman Emanuel Cleaver at the end of his chairmanship early this month, appears to be a lone voice as she has written a letter to the president actually recommending CBC members for the cabinet. "As you consider candidates for your cabinet, it is with great privilege that I recommend Congressman Melvin Watt of North Carolina for the position of Secretary of Commerce and Congresswoman Barbara Lee of California for the position of Secretary of Labor," Fudge wrote in a January 10 letter. "Congressman Watt and Congresswoman Lee are exceptionally well-qualified, proven candidates. It is without reservation that I urge you to consider strongly this recommendation. I am available at your convenience should you desire further information." Earlier this month Obama announced his nomination of former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) as secretary of Defense; White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew as Treasury secretary; Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security John Brennan as director of the Central Intelligence Agency; and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) as secretary of state, which is third in line to the presidency. Eric Holder will remain attorney general and Kathleen Sebelius will remain secretary of Health and Human Services. Other cabinet secretaries could be replaced. Cabinet appointments are just one way a president can demonstrate diversity. The other way is influencing or establishing public policies that disparately affect various minority groups. President Obama has done so in the cases of women; GLBTs (gays, lesbians, bi-sexuals and transgendered Americans); Latinos and veterans. Dr. King said at the August 28, 1963 March on Washington that his dream was that his "four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." While no one questions the president's principles in that regard, many hope his using the King Bible stacked on top of the Lincoln Bible for the swearing in might mean double sensitivity to activity on behalf of African-Americans. The official swearing in on the January 20 date required by the Constitution, will take place in a private ceremony on Sunday. On that day, Obama will use the family Bible of First Lady Michelle Obama. Click here to read more Source: New America Media | Hazel Trice Edney

This Sunday, the Baltimore Ravens travel to Gillette Stadium to take on the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game for the second year in a row. The game will kick off at 6:30 pm ET and will be commentated by Jim Nantz and Phil Simms on CBS. What is the over/under on the number of times Nantz make an on-air congratulatory shout-out to Michael Lombardi?

Last week, the Ravens were able to upset the Denver Broncos in stunning fashion, in large part thanks to one of the worst defensive executions I've ever seen in the final moments of regulation. Seriously, how do two members of the secondary let a member not only get behind them, but catch the ball with a clear path to the end zone?

It doesn't matter anymore how they got here -- the fact is that the Ravens are one game away from the Super Bowl. On...

US_presidential_inauguration_2005.jpg.728x520_q85.jpg
The theme
The official theme for the 57th presidential inauguration is "Faith in America's Future." It commemorates the United States' perseverance and marks the 150th anniversary of the placement of the Statue of Freedom atop the U.S. Capitol dome.
The oath ceremonies
The Constitution requires the president's term to start on Jan. 20, but because that falls on a Sunday this year, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will have two ceremonies: one today and a public ceremony on Monday, followed by a parade and inaugural balls.
Private ceremony: Obama's private swearing in will be a brief, sparsely attended ceremony in the Blue Room of the White House. Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath of office today just before noon, the time the Constitution says his second term begins. Obama's family will attend, along with a few reporters and television cameras. Obama is not expected to make a speech.
Biden's swearing in: Vice President Joe Biden will be sworn in during a separate ceremony this morning at the Naval Observatory.
The Bibles: Obama will put his hand over the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s well-worn Bible at his public swearing in on Monday, the holiday celebrating the birthday of the slain civil rights leader. King's Bible will be stacked with the Bible used by President Abraham Lincoln at his first inauguration and in Obama's first inauguration.
For the private ceremony, Obama will use the family Bible of his wife's family. According to the inaugural committee, that Bible was a gift from the first lady's father, Fraser Robinson III, to his mother, LaVaughn Delores Robinson, on Mother's Day in 1958.
Invocation: Myrlie Evers-Williams, widow of slain civil rights-era activist Medgar Evers. It will be the first time a woman, and a layperson rather than clergy, has done so.
Benediction: The Rev. Luis León, pastor of St. John's Episcopal Church, just across Lafayette Park from the White House.
Performers: The late Whitney Houston's performance of The Star-Spangled Banner at the 1991 Super Bowl is widely considered the gold standard. Could Beyonce top it on Inauguration Day? James Taylor will sing America the Beautiful and American Idol star Kelly Clarkson, My Country 'Tis of Thee.
Poet: Richard Blanco, 44, the author of three critically acclaimed collections, will be the youngest poet, the first Hispanic poet and the first gay poet to speak at an inauguration.
Crowd estimate: In 2009, about 1.8 million people poured onto the Mall to witness the first African-American president sworn into office. This time, District of Columbia officials estimate that 600,000 to 800,000 people will attend. George W. Bush's second inauguration attracted between 300,000 and 400,000 people. Bill Clinton's likely drew around 450,000.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Obama's inauguration Monday coincides with the national holiday celebrating the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The inauguration has occurred one other time on the King holiday: President Bill Clinton's second inauguration, Jan. 20, 1997.
Where to watch
Today: Private swearing in: CNN, 10 a.m.; C-SPAN, 10:30 a.m.; Fox News Channel, 11 a.m.; MSNBC, 11:50 a.m.; ABC, 11:55 a.m.; CBS, 11:55 a.m. NBC, 11:55 a.m. Monday: Tampa Theatre will show the public inauguration on the silver screen. Doors open at 10 a.m. There is no charge; the theater is at 711 Franklin St., Tampa. TV times: C-SPAN coverage begins at 7 a.m.; CNN coverage begins at 9 a.m.; ABC, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; CBS, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; NBC, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; MSNBC, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Fox News Channel, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; 9-10 p.m.
Inaugural luncheon
After the swearing-in ceremony and inaugural address, the president, vice president and guests will attend the inaugural luncheon inside the Capitol's Statuary Hall. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies is the host.
First course: steamed lobster with New England clam chowder sauce.
Second course: hickory-grilled bison with red potato horseradish cake and wild huckleberry reduction.
Third course: Hudson Valley apple pie with sour cream ice cream, aged cheese and honey.
The recipes: Care to try your hand at red potato horseradish cake or sour cream ice cream? Recipes are at inaugural.senate.gov/luncheon/menus.
About the ''champagne:" The menu's dessert listing calls for "Korbel Natural, Special Inaugural Cuvee Champagne, California." That drew a sharp rebuke from the Champagne Bureau, a Washington lobby for the French Champagne industry. True Champagne, the bureau insists, can only come from the region of Champagne, France, and bubbly from anywhere else should only claim to be "sparkling wine," no matter how good it tastes.
Parade
The inaugural parade, with members from all branches of the military, marches down Pennsylvania Avenue NW from the Capitol to the White House, starting at 2 p.m. It will feature eight floats, made by a company that has been building presidential floats since the 1949 inauguration of Harry S. Truman.
Inaugural balls
This year Obama announced the number of inaugural balls would be reduced to just two official parties in an effort to reduce government spending.
Commander in Chief's Ball: Open to select members of the U.S. military, it is being doubled in size over four years ago to about 4,000 at the Washington Convention Center.
The Inaugural Ball: Also at the Washington Convention Center, expected to draw 35,000. A limited number of tickets were released to the public but are no longer available. Many state, corporate and private balls are held in hotels and museums around D.C. Most are sold out.
The Florida Ball: Members of Florida's congressional delegation planned to attend the "Sunshine and Stars" inaugural ball Saturday night in Washington. The event had some powerful corporate sponsors, including CSX, Florida Blue, Florida Sugar Cane League and TECO Energy, according to an invite posted by the Sunlight Foundation. It benefits Florida House and the Florida State Society.

It seems like only yesterday that Samsung introduced the Galaxy brand, and in the blink of an eye we’ve gone from a handful of phones to dozens of phones, tablets, and some weird stuff in between.

The latest product rumored to join ranks under the Galaxy moniker is a smaller Note tablet, likely meant to compete with the iPad mini, Kindle Fire HD, etc.

According to SamMobile, the tablet will be called Galaxy Note 8.0, and will have almost all the same features as big brother GalNote 10.1, but in a smaller 8-inch form factor. The report indicates that the tablet will come in two versions, one with 3G + WiFi, and the other WiFi-only.

The Galaxy Note 8.0 is also said to have 1280×800 TFT 8-inch display, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera for video chat. You’ll also have all the standard goodies inside, like 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, and a micro SD slot for expandable memory.

Android 4.2 Jellybean is allegedly shipping with the device.

The 8-inch form factor makes sense for Samsung at this crossing. The Kindle Fire is doing well, and Apple just released the iPad mini, which is a similar size, late last year.

A 7-inch tablet would only infringe on the Galaxy Note phones’ territory, and any bigger and the tablet runs the risk of chomping into Samsung’s current flagship tablet, the Galaxy Note 10.1.

We’re still unaware of price, availability, and which processor this bad boy will pack under the hood, but we’ll know more as soon as Samsung gives official word. The tablet is expected to be unveiled at MWC in February.

BB10 blackberry 10

The descent of RIM has been well-documented in the tech press, but the obituaries may have been scribbled prematurely. BlackBerry 10 is almost here and it could spark a major comeback for the brand.

We’ve been waiting a long time for BlackBerry 10 and it’s widely perceived as the last roll of the dice for RIM. The BlackBerry brand has fallen behind the competition as iOS and Android have carved up the smartphone market between them. When we last pointed out that BlackBerry wasn’t dead yet, in the summer, the share price was languishing below $8 and it has been steadily climbing since then, almost hitting $15 as the new platform comes into sight on the horizon.

Thorsten Heins replaced co-CEOs Balsillie and Lazaridis almost exactly a year ago and he decided that the new platform would not be rushed. Despite the pressure on the company, he recognized that another poor update would make things worse. At BlackBerry World last May he said “I want this BlackBerry 10 to be perfect.”

It’s worth remembering that RIM has actually been adding subscribers in the last few months. Market share has dwindled, but the smartphone market has been growing fast enough to mask that. It was only last quarter that RIM lost subscribers for the first time, down from 80 to 79 million. The company has laid off thousands, restructured, and amassed a $2.9 billion war chest to launch the new platform. There can be no doubt that BlackBerry 10 has to succeed if RIM’s future is to be healthy, but we’ve heard enough doomsaying. Here are a few reasons why BB 10 might just surprise everyone and put RIM back in the game.

Securing the enterprise

For Fortune 500 companies and government agencies across the world BlackBerry has always been the platform of choice. RIM forgot its base with BlackBerry 7 as ill-advised and rushed attempts to court the mass market damaged the brand. The company will not make the same mistake again. The BlackBerry platform still has a solid reputation in the business world for a high level of security and reliability. BlackBerry Enterprise Server, BES, is a powerful tool for IT departments.

RIM just reported that 1,600 companies have already signed up for BlackBerry 10 training. Prospects for BB 10 in the enterprise are bright and its biggest rivals, Android and iOS, are consumer-focused first, with businesses clocking a distant second. Windows Phone 8 could be BB 10’s only real competition in this space.

Dividing work and play

Thinking about the enterprise goes beyond secure email and enterprise apps. RIM has also included a separation between Personal and Work modes so users can switch between them at a touch. Personal mode allows you to install whatever apps or games you want and deal with personal email in an encrypted partition. Work mode is a separate partition that can be locked down by your employer. It’s a clever solution to the company subsidized smartphone and the BYOD trend. Your employer can exert some control over the Work side of your device while your Personal partition is beyond their control.

Standing out from the crowd

We’ve seen plenty of predictions about Microsoft finally hitting its stride in mobile with Windows Phone 8 and one reason you’ll see frequently being cited is that it’s different from the present incumbents, Android and iOS. That’s one of the best things about BlackBerry 10 – it’s a genuine alternative, not a weak copy. It will look familiar to Android, iOS, or WP8 users, but feel very different to use. The integration of gestures, the speed, the active frames, the general flow between apps and services; it all appears to be well-thought out and intuitive to use. It’s also important to note that BB 10 isn’t missing any major feature that’s standard on Android or iOS.

If people are bored or frustrated by Android or iOS then BB 10 could easily catch their attention as a viable alternative.

Attracting developers

RIM understands the importance of attracting developers to the platform and establishing a decent pool of apps for new BB 10 customers. There’s no way the platform is going to catch up with iOS and Android at the 700,000 plus mark, but who needs 700,000 apps? As long as the big apps are all present and correct and there’s a decent choice in BlackBerry App World customers will be happy.

At the weekend RIM was able to attract 15,000 app submissions by offering $100 for every ported app which is accepted and offered for sale in the BB 10 app store. Other incentives include the chance to win BB 10 development handsets and trips to developer conferences. RIM also set aside $10 million to offer developers with apps that exceed 100 downloads and earn at least $1,000 a guaranteed top up to $10,000. The aim is to launch with 70,000 apps and that would be unprecedented for a new platform.

A loyal fan base

Can RIM persuade the 79 million subscribers it has right now to upgrade to BB 10? Even a percentage of those customers upgrading would give the new platform a great start. Then you have to consider all the BlackBerry fans who switched to iOS and Android in the last few years. Some of them won’t be coming back, but not everyone is enamored with the market leaders. The BlackBerry name still has a lot of goodwill and if RIM can present a decent proposition with BB 10, it will tempt some customers back.

The Hub: a universal inbox

Forget about dipping in and out of multiple apps. The BlackBerry Hub is a truly universal inbox. It can suck in multiple email accounts, call history, BBM, text messages, popular third-party apps like Whats App, as well as social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. With built-in calendar functions, this is your one-stop shop for new information and it could be a real time-saver. If you fear information overload don’t worry because it’s easy to filter for the accounts you want to check.

Multitasking

Part of the reason that BB 10 flows so well is the focus on multitasking. Dropping in and out of apps to deal with notifications is a pain point for smartphone users. With BB 10, you can swipe to take a peek at your inbox without leaving the current app. If you swipe left to right you’ll see the other apps that are running in the background and you can switch quickly. Even the home screen focuses on recently used apps and you can have up to nine applications active simultaneously.

That trademark physical keyboard

There’s no doubt that touchscreens are here to stay, but some people will always prefer a physical keyboard on their smartphone and RIM make the best in the business. The quality and feel of the BlackBerry keyboard is unmatched and that will attract a niche audience to choose BB 10. The platform is said to launch with a full touchscreen phone and another touch phone with a QWERTY.

It’s also worth pointing out that RIM has worked on the touchscreen keyboard in BB 10 so it is well-spaced, accurate, offers decent predictive text, and even simultaneous multi-language support. It’s already one of our favorite touch keyboards.

BBM

BlackBerry Messenger was once a killer feature for the platform and it could be set to take center stage in BB 10. The real-time chat client is going to expand on instant messaging to include voice calls over Wi-Fi. RIM has also worked on BBM Connected which is about integrating other apps like Facebook. If the rumored video chat and screen sharing functionality is thrown into the mix then BBM could be a killer feature again.

Embracing the new

There are a couple of features that signal RIM’s willingness to embrace new trends. The most notable is perhaps the camera app and something the company is calling “Timeshift.” When you take a photo you can rewind or fast forward via a dial to pick the best facial expression and a slider lets you pick the best pose to create a composite image that’s just the one you want. If it works well then it could be a great feature.

Yamaha intros mini audio systems with iOS remote control, explosion of colors

Yamaha intros a quartet of bookshelf audio systems with iOS remote control, panoply of colors

We’re well acquainted with both connected bookshelf audio systems and colorful speakers — seeing both in one place, though, is still a rarity. Yamaha reckons the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Its MCR-B142 and MCR-042 both put out 30W of sound taken from a 30-pin Apple device dock, USB, aux-in or old-fashioned CDs, but they also come in 10 different colors; anyone who’s wanted a purple stereo to match their crushed velvet decor will be right at home. Both the B142 and a more subdued, desktop-sized TSX-B232 will also receive audio through Bluetooth, and a free iOS app lets us steer the two systems without leaving the couch. These ship later this month along with the B232′s wireless-free sibling, the TSX-132. Just be ready to pay a premium — the roster starts at $400 for the MCR-042, and scales up to $550 for the TSX-B232.

Manti Te'o #5 of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish warms up prior to playing against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2013 Discover BCS National Championship game at Sun Life Stadium on January 7, 2013 in Miami Gardens, Florida. (Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images North America)
USA TODAY Sports answers all the questions from the bizarre Manti Te'o story:
Q. When did Te'o first learn of the hoax?

A. According to Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick, Te'o was at the ESPN College Football Awards show on Dec. 6 when he received a phone call from his girlfriend's phone number with what he recognized as her voice, claiming she was not dead. At that point, he knew something was wrong and informed his parents during a trip home to Hawaii between the Heisman Trophy ceremony and Notre Dame's bowl practices.

Q. When did Notre Dame first learn of the hoax?

A. On Dec. 26, Te'o informed head coach Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Bob Diaco about the phone call. The following two days, he met with Swarbrick to review the details of his relationship with the woman. At that point, Notre Dame hired an independent investigative firm to research the situation. The report was delivered to Notre Dame on Jan. 4, just three days before the national championship game.

Q. Who is Lennay Kekua?

A. Apparently she is the alias of one or more people who Swarbrick says duped Te'o. Deadspin began its investigation into Kekua by looking for a death certificate and came up with nothing. Stanford's registrar did not have records of Kekua as a student. Other online background checks found no evidence that a person named Lennay Kekua even exists. There was also no public obituary or funeral notice in newspapers. So, in essence, it seems she was a figment of somebody's imagination.

Q. What is catfishing?

A. In short, catfishing -- a term cited by Swarbrick in his explanation of the events -- is the process of developing a fake online persona with the express purpose of deceiving a love-struck significant other. (To what end, especially with Te'o, remains unclear.) In Te'o's case, the people behind Lennay Kekua were participating in "catfishing."

Q. What has Te'o and his family said about meeting Kekua?

A. Te'o claimed he met Kekua after Notre Dame played at Stanford in 2009 and had even recalled touching her hand as they saw each other for the first time. He made numerous other references in interviews to meeting her in person, which turned out to be false. Te'o's father, Brian, also told the South Bend Tribune in October that Kekua had traveled to Hawaii and "(Manti) would meet with her there."

Q. Did they ever meet?

A. No. Te'o's statement acknowledges the relationship was strictly online and on the phone. Swarbrick said Te'o admitted he and Kekua had arranged multiple meetings for which she never showed up. Why Te'o continued pursuing the relationship at that point remains unclear. Swarbrick said he would let Te'o explain why he misled media members and others about the nature of their relationship.

LeBron James #6 of the Miami Heat looks on during a game against the Chicago Bulls at AmericanAirlines Arena on January 4, 2013 in Miami, Florida. (Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images North America)
LeBron James, 28, became the youngest player in the history of the NBA to score 20,000 points when he hit a floater in the lane late in the second quarter at Golden State on Wednesday night at Oracle Arena.
In a symbolic reminder that he is the farthest thing from a one-dimensional scorer, James - who has been assaulting the record books since he was drafted first overall by Cleveland in 2003 out of St. Vincent St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio - also surpassed the 5,000-assist mark against the Warriors. By doing so, he joined a club that - according to Basketball-Reference.com - has a total of 13 members. James surpassed the 5,000-rebound mark last season, and is now one of 11 players in the 20,000-point, 5,000-assist ,5,000-rebound club.
Thirty-eight players have reached the 20,000-point mark in all, with seven of them active (including James' 37-year-old teammate, Ray Allen, who entered play with 23,336 points). James' 5,000th assist came midway through the first quarter, when he found Dwyane Wade for a dunk that put the Heat up 8-7.
His scoring was versatile as always - a converted alley-oop via Wade from midcourt early, a three-pointer atop the key late in the first quarter that stretched the Heat's lead to nine, and a stepback 17-footer that gave him 17 points and put Miami up 41-29 with 4:24 remaining in the second quarter.
James - who was the youngest player to be drafted No. 1 overall in 2003 at 18 years old, the youngest to win Rookie of the Year, and the youngest to score both 1,000 and 10,000 points - has long since cornered the market on becoming the youngest player in the game's history to achieve such feats. He is marching past the milestones in what is already a remarkable career.

Written by Thomas Jefferson and guided through the Virginia legislature by James Madison, the Statute affirmed that "Almighty God hath created the mind free" and "all men shall be free to profess . . . their opinions in matters of religion." Years later, our Founders looked to the Statute as a model when they enshrined the principle of religious liberty in the Bill of Rights.
Because of the protections guaranteed by our Constitution, each of us has the right to practice our faith openly and as we choose. As a free country, our story has been shaped by every language and enriched by every culture. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus, Sikhs and non-believers. Our patchwork heritage is a strength we owe to our religious freedom.
Americans of every faith have molded the character of our Nation. They were pilgrims who sought refuge from persecution; pioneers who pursued brighter horizons; protesters who fought for abolition, women's suffrage, and civil rights. Each generation has seen people of different faiths join together to advance peace, justice, and dignity for all.
Today, we also remember that religious liberty is not just an American right; it is a universal human right to be protected here at home and across the globe. This freedom is an essential part of human dignity, and without it our world cannot know lasting peace.
As we observe Religious Freedom Day, let us remember the legacy of faith and independence we have inherited, and let us honor it by forever upholding our right to exercise our beliefs free from prejudice or persecution.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 16, 2013, as Religious Freedom Day. I call on all Americans to commemorate this day with events and activities that teach us about this critical foundation of our Nation's liberty, and show us how we can protect it for future generations at home and around the world.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this sixteenth day of January, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.
BARACK OBAMA

Lance Armstrong has admitted to talk show host Oprah Winfrey that he used performance-enhancing drugs in a lengthy interview to be aired later this week, according to a person familiar with the situation and USA Today.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the interview is to be broadcast on Thursday on Winfrey's OWN network.
A confession marks a stunning reversal after Armstrong spent years strenuously denying doping allegations, sticking to his story even after being publicly shamed and stripped of his seven Tour de France titles last year.
Any admission of guilt could also have legal or financial ramifications, particularly among big-name corporate sponsors such as Nike, who loyally stood by him even as the allegations grew.
It was Armstrong's first interview since he was stripped in October of his Tour titles, after the US Anti-Doping Agency said he helped orchestrate the most sophisticated doping program in sports history.
Winfrey was set to appear on CBS television's "This Morning" on Tuesday to promote the interview.
She did not reveal details of the interview ahead of its Thursday night air date on her OWN cable network and its website, but took to Twitter to say the exchange had lasted more than two and a half hours. "He came READY!" she tweeted.
The announcement that Armstrong had agreed to an interview sparked widespread speculation that he might finally confess to being a drug cheat after years of adamant denials.
Reporters, photographers and TV crews took up positions earlier across the street from Armstrong's opulent Austin home, where the interview took place and which is surrounded by an eight-foot (2.4-meter) high stone wall.

Let the war of the giant screens begin. Huawei went big–real big–with the Ascend Mate: A 6.1-inch screen and 4050mAh battery headline for the Ascend Mate, along with a long list of features like Magic Touch and Smart Reading that will put the device in direct competition with Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2.

If you’re going to do something, you might as well do it big. That appears to be the strategy Huawei has taken when creating its newest line of smartphones. The biggest of them all, the Ascend Mate, made its debut on the CES 2013 stage today. With a 6.1-inch (6.1-inch!) screen, the device will immediately draw comparisons to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 — a challenge Huawei seems to welcome.

The Ascend Mate isn’t just a big screen, but the device itself is mostly screen. With a 0.73 screen-to-frame ratio and 9.9mm thickness, Huawei is wasting little space on this device. Every part of that 6.1-inch screen will be sending through a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, touting 316 pixels per inch.

Providing power for that display will be a battery bigger than any rumor was able to guess: A 4050mAh battery, the largest such battery in a mobile device we know of. While that battery is huge, it also won’t be drained easily. With the heelp of a patented technology, Automatic Discontinuous Perception, the Ascend Mate consumes 20% less power. CEO Richard Yu also bragged of 25 percent less time charging compared to the Galaxy Note II.

Aside from the size, the Ascend Mate has quite a few other features centered around the screen that should intrigue. A feature called Magic Touch makes the touchscreen function even if a user is wearing gloves. Richard Yu placed his tie between his hand and the screen and was still able to operate the device.

Displayed on the screen of the Mate are several new user interface elements. Starting with the One Hand UI, owners of the handset will have the capability to shift elements like the keyboard or dial pad to another side of the screen, making it usable with one hand. Another of the UI innovations is Easy Panel, which allows apps to float over other apps, giving access to multiple apps and information inside them at the same time.

lance-armstrong-apologizes-to-STAFF.jpg

Lance Armstrong apologized to the staff of Livestrong Monday prior to an afternoon interview taping with Oprah Winfrey in which he planned to admit to doping during his cycling career.
Livestrong spokesman Katherine McLane said it was a "very sincere and heartfelt apology to the staff."
Livestong, a charity based in Austin, Texas, was founded by Armstrong to provide support to cancer survivors. It has been entangled in the controversy surrounding Armstrong's cycling career during the last few years. In October, Armstrong was forced to step down from the Livestrong board after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released a massive file of detailed doping evidence against him.
Armstrong, 41, has denied doping for years. The Oprah interview is scheduled to air Thursday.
