Google-unveils-Nexus-4,-Nexus-10,-Android-4.2-Jelly-Bean

In a surprise move, Google has unveiled its latest lineup of Nexus devices, which now includes the Nexus 4 smartphone, Nexus 7 mini-tablet, and full-sized, super-high-resolution Nexus 10 tablet. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean was also announced, along with Google's new Photo Sphere panorama feature.

google-nexus-announcementsAfter canceling its New York press event due to Hurricane Sandy’s high winds, flooding, rain, and possible zombie apocalypse, Google went ahead and announced its new lineup of Nexus devices via the Web, where weather has no power over us mortals. As expected, Google’s offerings now include a new 32GB Nexus 7 tablet with cellular connectivity; a new, super-high-resolution Nexus 10 tablet; and the all-new Nexus 4 smartphone. The latest version of Android Jelly Bean, 4.2, was also announced.

“Today, we’re excited to announce three great new Nexus devices … in small, medium and large,” wrote Google in a blog post. “And they all run Android 4.2, a new flavor of Jelly Bean — which includes the latest version of Google Now and other great new features.”

Nexus 10

Billed as “the highest resolution tablet on the planet,” the Nexus 10, made by Samsung, includes a 2560 x 1600 resolution Super AMOLED display with 299 dots per inch (dpi) — a leap higher than the 264 dpi of Apple’s iPad. The Nexus 10 also features Samsung’s new 1.7 GHz Exynos 5 chips, 2GB of RAM, NFC, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a 9,000mAh battery that Google says will deliver five hours of video playback, or 500 hours of up-time on standby. Like the Nexus 7, it does not include an SD card slot for additional storage. Of course, the Nexus 10 comes pre-loaded with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The 16GB version will cost $400, while the 32GB model clocks in at $500. The Nexus 10 will be available November 13.

Nexus 4

We already got a glimpse at the Nexus 4, after someone — you guessed it — left one in a bar in San Francisco. But now we have the confirmed specifics: Quad-core processor, 4.7-inch display (320dpi), wireless charging capabilities, Google Now, and a new feature called Photo Sphere for creating 360-degree, Street View-like panorama shots. The Nexus 4 will go for $300 starting November 13.

Nexus 7

The Nexus 7 will now only be available in 16GB ($200) and 32GB ($250) models. (The 8GB version is no longer of this world.) Also, Google will now offer 32GB Nexus 7 model with HSPA+ connectivity for $300.

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Updates to Android Jelly Bean include Gesture Typing, “which lets you glide your finger over the letters you want to type on the keyboard,” according to Google. A streaming video-to-TV feature has also been added, as well as multi-user support for tablets.

For the second time during the presidential campaign, a group of African-American ministers in North Carolina has criticized Franklin Graham for challenging the spiritual beliefs of President Barack Obama, accusing the evangelist Monday of promoting a narrow form of Christianity that supports a politically conservative point of view.

Meeting in Charlotte, the group read an open letter to Graham that comes in response to a series of full-page ads that bear a photograph of his father, Billy Graham, and ask voters to elect candidates who support "biblical principles."
In comments to the Observer last week, Graham said his 93-year-old father supported the message, which endorses candidates who support the nation of Israel, "the sanctity of life" and "the biblical definition of marriage."
Franklin Graham went on to say that Obama's support for gay marriage and abortion rights challenges "God's standard" and says "it's OK for people to sin."
He said he has cast an early ballot for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, whose positions "are more in line with the moral teachings that I believe in." During a meeting this month at his home in Montreat, the elder Graham offered to help Romney "any way I can."
State NAACP President William Barber accused Graham of "being seduced by the sirens of money and power," and of "cherry-picking the easy parts of Christianity" that serve his partisan politics. In doing so, Barber said, Graham has ignored the broader messages of the Bible to help the poor, feed the hungry and treat the sick.
"These texts, Brother Graham, are so primary to our faith tradition but so secondary in your critique," Barber said, surrounded by more than a dozen other ministers. Why do some Christian conservatives "say so little about what God says so much, and so much about what God says so little? To exclude this focus and try to make a claim of concern for Christian values is hollow at best and heretical at worst."

4798Just when you thought radio had lost the power to provoke strong passions, Tavis Smiley is stepping up and taking on Chicago's public radio establishment.

In a blistering attack on WBEZ-FM (91.5) Monday, the PBS host and bestselling author disputed the reasons given for canceling the weekly radio talk show he co-hosts with Dr. Cornel West, the Princeton University professor. "One could argue that it is easier for an African American to be president of the United States than it is to host a primetime radio program on Chicago Public Radio," Smiley declared.
It all started here last week with news that WBEZ had dropped Smiley & West from its lineup. The show, distributed by Public Radio International, had been airing at noon Sundays until late last month.
Chicago Public Media officials explained the decision by citing audience erosion (noting a decline in weekly listenership from 37,900 to 13,200) and expressing concerns about the program's fairness and balance. "The show had developed much more of an 'advocacy' identity, which is inconsistent with our approach on WBEZ," a spokesman said.
Torey Malatia, president and CEO of Chicago Public Media, was more pointed in his criticism of the show, telling PRI and others that it was "showing signs of significant declines in production effectiveness and focus," and that it was no longer serving the needs of his audience.
Supporters of Smiley & West inferred more sinister motives, claiming that the hosts were punished for their outspoken criticism of President Obama on the show, in their bestseller The Rich and the Rest of Us, and on their 2011 "Poverty Tour" highlighting the plight of the impoverished. (For the record, Chicago Public Media officials denied that any political pressure was involved.)

Earlier this month, it was reported that Whitney Houston's family filed a petition, as executors of the Pop star's estate, against Bobbi Kristina Brown in an attempt to revise the 19-year-old's inheritance payments.

Now, just weeks later, it appears that the case has apparently been settled.
Sources tell TMZ, that Kristina and her grandmother, Cissy Houston, have reached an agreement to leave the teenager's $20 million payment plans unadjusted. As the agreement currently stands, Brown will receive 10% when she turns 21, 20% at age 25, and the remaining amount when she turns 30.
The singer's mother, Cissy Houston and sister-in-law/business manager, Pat Houston originally sought out to revise Brown's inheritance payments citing that she "is a highly visible target for those who would exert undue influence over her inheritance and/or seek to benefit from respondent's resources and celebrity."
Last week while promoting their new Lifetime reality show, "The Houstons: On Our Own," Cissy and Pat Houston appeared on "The View" to discuss their new series, which included a scene of Bobbi Kristina drinking a mimosa. As Pat Houston explained to show hosts, Barbara Walters and Sheri Shepherd, guiding Brown into the right direction is a work in progress.

Jeremy Lin may have had a shaky start during his preseason premiere as a Houston Rocket, but the 24-year-old popular basketball star insists that he is still playing for God and adjusting to fame.

Lin has only shot 28.3 percent from the floor as a Rocket guard, averaging 6.3 points, 6 assists and 2.5 turnovers. Although he is adjusting to his new team after a breakout 2011-2012 season with the New York Knicks Lin insists that some things have not changed.
The Christian guard is still vocal about playing for God.
"I just play for God. That's what I need to focus on every day. I'm going to have good games; I'm going to have bad games," Lin told the Houston Chronicle. "If I play for God, if I play hard and if I try to give Him the glory, I'm OK. I need to learn to be OK with whatever happens and trust it's part of God's perfect plan."
Lin said focusing on his faith has helped him overcome the critics of his game.
"If I focus on God, I can tune everything else out," Lin said.

Politics can turn normally calm people into ranting, raving lunatics. This divisive subject can transform a friendly chat over coffee at a Starbucks into a venomous, verbal brawl. But it can also be a great segue into an opportunity to share the good news of Jesus.

Questions like "What do you think about Mitt Romney being a Mormon?" or "Have you ever wondered what President Obama believes about God?" can be surprising and effective conversation starters.
However you choose to transition the subject from politics to the gospel, ask God to give you the right mixture of wisdom, tact and boldness. Then make the transition and start talking about Jesus. After all, He is the only one who can truly transform this nation from the inside out.

If you think that this kind of storm coming at this particular time right before the U.S. election is just a coincidence, you are woefully deceived. And Christians, God is more angry with us than He is with those who do not know Him. "Break up your fallow ground; it is time to seek the Lord."

The projected storm surge from Hurricane Sandy is a "worst case scenario" with devastating waves and tides predicted for the highly populated New York City metro area, government forecasters said Sunday.
The more they observe it, the more the experts worry about the water - which usually kills and does more damage than winds in hurricanes.
In this case, seas will be amped up by giant waves and full-moon-powered high tides. That will combine with drenching rains, triggering inland flooding as the hurricane merges with a winter storm system that will worsen it and hold it in place for days.
Louis Uccellini, environmental prediction chief for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told The Associated Press that given Sandy's due east-to-west track into New Jersey, that puts the worst of the storm surge just north in New York City, Long Island and northern New Jersey. "Yes, this is the worst case scenario," he said.
In a measurement of pure kinetic energy, NOAA's hurricane research division on Sunday ranked the surge and wave "destruction potential" for Sandy - just the hurricane, not the hybrid storm it will eventually become - at 5.8 on a 0 to 6 scale. The damage expected from winds will be far less, experts said. Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters says that surge destruction potential number is a record and it's due to the storm's massive size.
"You have a lot of wind acting over a long distance of water for hundreds of miles" and that piles the storm surge up when it finally comes ashore, Masters said. Even though it doesn't pack much power in maximum wind speed, the tremendous size of Sandy - more than 1,000 miles across with tropical storm force winds - adds to the pummelling power when it comes ashore, he said.
The storm surge energy numbers are bigger than the deadly 2005 Hurricane Katrina, but that can be misleading. Katrina's destruction was concentrated in a small area, making it much worse, Masters said. Sandy's storm surge energy is spread over a wider area. Also, Katrina hit a city that is below sea level and had problems with levees.
National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb said Hurricane Sandy's size means some coastal parts of New York and New Jersey may see water rise from 6 to 11 feet from surge and waves. The rest of the coast north of Virginia can expect 4 to 8 feet of surge.
The full moon Monday will add 2 to 3 inches to the storm surge in New York, Masters said.
"If the forecasts hold true in terms of the amount of rainfall and the amount of coastal flooding, that's going to be what drives up the losses and that's what's going to hurt," said Susan Cutter, director of the hazards and vulnerability research institute at the University of South Carolina.
Cutter said she worries about coastal infrastructure, especially the New York subways, which were shutting down Sunday night.
Klaus Jacob, a Columbia University researcher who has advised the city on coastal risks, said, "We have to prepare to the extent we can, but I'm afraid that from a subway point of view, I think it's beyond sheer preparations. I do not think that there's enough emergency measures that will help prevent the subway from flooding."
Knabb said millions of people may be harmed by inland flooding.
A NOAA map of inland and coastal flood watches covers practically the entire Northeast: all of Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut; most of Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts and Vermont, and parts of northeastern Ohio, eastern Virginia, North Carolina, and western New Hampshire.
Along the mid-Atlantic coast, storm surge is already starting to build, Uccellini said. NOAA's Coastal Services Center chief Margaret Davidson said to expect "bodacious impacts" from both surge and inland flooding.
The surge - in which water steadily increases from the ocean- will be worst in the areas north of where Sandy comes ashore.
New York will have the most intense storm surge if Sandy comes ashore anywhere in New Jersey, Uccellini said. Only if it arrives farther south, such as Delaware, will New York see a slightly, only slightly, smaller storm surge.
In general, areas to the south and west of landfall will get the heaviest of rains. Some areas of Delaware and the Maryland and Virginia peninsula will see a foot of rain over the several days the storm parks in the East, Uccellini said. The rest of the mid-Atlantic region may see closer to 4 to 8 inches, NOAA forecasts.
The good news about inland flooding is that the rivers and ground aren't as saturated as they were last year when Hurricane Irene struck, causing nearly $16 billion in damage, much of it from inland flooding in places like Vermont, Uccellini and Masters said.
The storm, which threatens roughly 50 million in the eastern third of the country, began as three systems. Two of those - an Arctic blast from the north and a normal winter storm front with a low-pressure trough- have combined. Hurricane Sandy will meld with those once it comes ashore, creating a hybrid storm with some of the nastier characteristics of a hurricane and a nor'easter, experts have said.

president-obama-VOTES-early.jpg

President Obama cast an early ballot on Thursday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Chicago. Mr. Obama became the first sitting president to cast his vote early. (Damon Winter/The New York Times)

President Barack Obama cast his ballot for the November 6 election on Thursday in his hometown of Chicago and encouraged others who could vote before Election Day to follow his example.
Obama, who was a U.S. senator from Illinois and had before becoming president, went to an early-voting facility to show his driver's license before making his pick for president.

"I'm just glad I renewed my driver's license," the president said after a poll worker asked to see his photo ID. When he handed it over, she studied it closely.

"For all of you who have not yet voted early, I just want everybody to see what an incredibly efficient process this was," he said to journalists afterward.

It was the first time a U.S. president had cast his vote early. Scenes of presidential candidates and their spouses voting on Election Day are typically a ritual that ends a long campaign season.

First lady Michelle Obama has already cast her vote. The president has said, with mock relief, that she voted for him.

Both Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney are stressing early voting more than ever, encouraging their backers to take advantage of opportunities in many states as a means of increasing turnout.

But Obama's team says statistics show he is benefiting the most from early turnout.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the campaign's early-voting margins were ahead of where they were in 2008 and beating Romney. The president was winning the early vote in the battleground states of Iowa, Ohio and Wisconsin, and had a 15- to 35-point lead among those who have already cast their votes.

"This is a major part of our on-the-ground program and focus, and we hope that having the president do this today will send a message to people across the country, in states where early vote is an option, that this is something they should do, too," Psaki told reporters on Air Force One.

"He has a busy life; many American people have busy lives - picking up their kids, taking their kids to soccer, working double shifts. And this is a great option to participate in the process," she added.

Obama's stop in Illinois - which he is expected to win easily - was part of a two-day, eight-state marathon campaign trip that included Iowa, Colorado, California, Nevada, Florida, Virginia and Ohio. The president encouraged people at rallies throughout the trip to vote early if they could.

After the recent shooting at the church of Pastor Creflo Dollar, local preachers are starting to call for changes in how their churches are secured.  In Washington DC, 20 people gathered for a morning prayer in honor of the man who was shot at World Changers Church International, where the victim was allegedly killed by a former maintenance worker.

Floyd Palmer has been identified as the shooter, and he was taken into custody on Wednesday.  Police are stating that Palmer may have some mental illness issues.

“We have security, but our security officers are not armed. But that might have to change at a time when armed persons come into churches for robberies, deranged persons come in with issues,” said the Rev. Henry P. Davis, pastor of First Baptist Church of Highland Park. “I still go back to the issue where there is too much access to guns, and it is a very critical issue.”

How to Let a Dream Die

4798#1 - Expect for everyone to understand you. (The quickest way to let the dream inside of you die is to dedicate yourself to everyone else's dream for your life!)
#2 - Believe that you are going to face zero resistance and that everyone will be excited for you!
#3 - Believe that it is going to be easy (where in the Bible did Jesus ever ask anyone to do anything easy or attainable without His involvement?)
#4 - Fall in love with the way things are rather than how they should be!
#5 - Allow people who have never accomplished anything significant to tell you why you can't either!
#6 - Procrastinate, always say "later" whenever you want to pursue the passion that the Lord put in your heart! (The snooze button is one of satan's best friends!)

A man in Southern California man is getting a visit from the Secret Service after hanging a Halloween decoration that some say was just disrespectful.  Eddie Million is admitting that it wasn’t such a good idea to hang an effigy of President Obama hanging from a noose in front his house.  He thought it was a good Halloween prank, but soon realized that the Secret Service doesn’t laugh very much.

“This is getting all blown out of proportion,” he said. “It’s down. It’s gone. We didn’t want to hurt the president.”

cloud-atlas-MOVIE-review.jpg

Release Date: October 26, 2012
Rating: R for violence, language, sexuality/nudity and some drug use
Genre: Drama
Run Time: 172 min.
Director: Lana and Andy Wachowski and c
Cast: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Whishaw, Keith David, James D'Arcy, Hugh Grant
"Everything is connected," states the tagline for Cloud Atlas. If you think you already know that--whether or not you agree with the idea--then you have to ask yourself if a 172-minute treatment of that theme is an investment of time you're willing to make. Cloud Atlas, based on a novel by David Mitchell, is a massive, $100 million adaptation that takes much too long to hit its stride, then leaves you wondering what all the fuss was about.
A number of well-known actors play multiple roles in the film, which consists of six different storylines set in 1849, 1936, 1973, the present day, 2144 and the 2300s. The use of the same actors across many of the scenarios underscores the movie's tagline, just in case you couldn't figure out on your own how, or why, these stories relate to each other.
The story threads are as follows: Jim Sturgess is a lawyer in 1849 who undergoes a moral awakening after he's befriended by a slave. Also appearing in the 1849 segment, set in the South Pacific, are characters played by Jim Broadbent, Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving (Captain America), Doona Bae and Keith David (Coraline).
The 1936 segment, set in Scotland, focuses on a young composer (Ben Whishaw, I'm Not There) working on a symphony, the "Cloud Atlas Sextet," with an older composer (Broadbent, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) determined to burnish his credentials.
In 1973 San Francisco, Berry (New Year's Eve) is a reporter working on a expose that puts her life in danger.
The 2012 segment is the movie's most humorous--something sorely lacking in this overlong, often dreary film. It tells of a publisher (Broadbent) who scores an unexpected hit with a biography of a malcontent played by Hanks (Larry Crowne).
The film's most consistently interesting segment, set in 2144, is also its most visually arresting story. It trades on shopworn ideas about dehumanization in the not-so-distant future, but does so with sleek visuals that comprise most of the film's memorable imagery.
Hanks also plays a goatherd in 2300s Hawaii, with Susan Sarandon (Enchanted) as a village Abbess.
Whether or not viewers will be able to ascertain a unifying theme across the stories, they could be forgiven for wondering what is the point of the entire endeavor. While some of the scenarios are engaging, the multiple stories give the film a wildly uneven quality, running from Mystery Science Theater 3000 unintentional goofiness to spectacularly executed action sequences and visionary image-making.

nexus10-3.jpeg?w=640

As you’ve no doubt already heard, Google is planning to unveil some new Nexus-branded goodies on Monday. LG’s Nexus 4 smartphone has been examined in what seems like excruciating detail already, but now leaked images of Samsung’s Nexus 10 tablet (obtained by BriefMobile) have begun to make their way ‘round the web.

An earlier leak of the Nexus 10’s instructional manual gave us a rough sense of its size and dimensions, but these new images add some much-needed context. First impressions: it’s actually pretty ho-hum in terms of industrial design. There aren’t enough photos floating around to form a really clear impression of the hardware, but (in usual Samsung fashion) it looks awfully slim and more than a little plasticky. The front-facing speaker placement is one of Samsung’s preferred (and rightly so) design choices. Most concerning is the patch of textured material running horizontally across the tablet’s back. Samsung seems to have gone for the same aesthetic as the mottled, leather-esque finish on the Nexus 7, but didn’t quite feel like swathing the entire back plate with the material.

The tablet’s looks may not be the most provocative, but the display should cause some ears to perk up. According to BriefMobile, the 10.1-inch Super AMOLED panel runs at a whopping 2560×1600, which works out to a pixel density of 298.9ppi — Apple’s Retina iPad tops out at 263.92, in case you were wondering. The internals are no slouch either — it’s being said that a 1.7GHz dual-core Exynos processor is running the show, with 2GB of RAM and a Mali-T604 GPU to help keep things chugging along nicely. There’s apparently no microSD card slot on-board (which is total BS, though not a huge surprise), and the device is expected to ship in multiple memory configurations starting at 16GB.

Also on deck is Android 4.2, which as it turns out won’t sport the “Key Lime Pie” moniker. It’s still Jelly Bean for all intents and purposes, though there are quite a few nifty additions to flesh out the stock Android experience. The Gallery app has been updated with some minor graphical enhancements, and the camera interface seems to have been improved substantially. Perhaps the most notable change we’ve seen so far though is the ability to create and switch between multiple user accounts on the device itself — some of us have been waiting years for this to become a reality.

There’s still no firm word on pricing or availability. But considering the leaks we’ve seen lately, it may not long before that info starts spreading too. That said, it seems like the Nexus 10 is going to be the Android tablet to covet — if Google manages to slap a reasonable price tag on this thing, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft could have some tremendous competition to contend with as we head into the holidays.

Apple’s fourth-generation iPad. Photo: John Bradley / Wired

If you own a third-generation iPad, you might be feeling a little burned by Apple this week. You’re fine with the iPad Mini the company announced. You saw that one coming. The fourth-generation iPad, though? And just six months after you bought Apple’s last latest-and-greatest iPad? Not cool. Not only are you now carrying around an iPad that doesn’t have Apple’s fastest mobile processor, what used to be an innocent port for the 30-pin connector is now an ugly scar compared to the little bellybutton of a hole for the fourth-gen iPad’s Lighting connector. Oh, and the new iPad has speedier graphics and a better camera, too.

Good news: You can ignore your buyer’s remorse. Your third-gen iPad is awesome. Hell, even the iPad 2 (which Apple still sells, by the way) is still relevant. So if you’re feeling less enamored with your third-gen iPad, stop. And if you’re thinking about ditching it altogether for the fourth-gen model, don’t.

For one thing, Apple’s iOS updates traditionally run on devices at least two generations old. For example, iOS 6, which was released in September, runs on not only the new iPhone 5 but also the iPhone 4S, 4 and even 3GS. Yes, the first-generation iPad, now a little more than two and a half years old, is stuck at iOS 5. But the fact that the iPad Mini runs on the iPad 2′s A5 processor (now two generations old) is a good sign. Apple won’t leave mini users out of any software updates for at least a couple of years. So your third-gen iPad, which has newer hardware components, is even further away from obsolescence.

Another reason to skip the new iPad is Apple’s pattern of product announcements. Before this week, Apple had always launched its iPads in the spring. The first one went on sale in April 2010, the second in March 2011 and the third in March 2012. If Apple sticks with spring iPad launches, that could mean a fifth-generation iPad early next year, which would leave owners of the fourth-gen model right where you are — contemplating the upgrade game six months after purchase. And if Apple waits until next fall to update the iPad line? Then your iPad 3 will be, at most, a year and a half old. You’d still have at least a year of relevance remaining if Apple were to maintain the shelf life it gave the iPad 1. But the likelihood is that these newer iPads will be much more future-proof than the debut model. Even iPad 2 owners are probably better off skipping the fourth-generation upgrade and waiting for what comes after.

Hopefully you’re convinced by now: Unless you own an iPad 1 or no iPad at all, you can skip this one. But if you are absolutely determined to ditch your third-gen iPad for the latest Apple slate, here are a few suggestions on how to go about it.

If cost isn’t and never was an issue for you, you can take your old iPad to an Apple store and donate it to Teach for America‘s iPads for Classrooms program. Local school districts might have their own iPad donation efforts set up too, such as the Lighthouse in the Community iPad Appeal program going on in Connecticut. There are plenty of kids — and adults — who will be blown away by your hand-me-down augmented reality apps, digital-publishing tools, 3-D maps, and on-the-fly video editing.

If that doesn’t work for you, you can always hawk your iPad on eBay or Craigslist, to someone who sees the value in what you’re about to disregard. There’s also the option of businesses that will resell your gadgets for you too — such as Gazelle, NextWorth and iCracked. But even if you resell your iPad, you’ll be doing so at a loss. Even a pristine third-gen 16GB iPad, with the original box, will fetch only about $250, versus the $500 it would have cost brand new just a couple of weeks ago.

Wait, though. If you bought your third-generation iPad within the last 30 days, you may want to call your local Apple store. Employees at the downtown San Francisco Apple Store told Wired that they will accept exchanges for all third-generation iPads that have been purchased within the last 30 days, as long as they’re free of dings, scratches and other signs of wear. But this departure from Apple’s normal 14-day policy doesn’t seem to be companywide. We’ve called other stores that have said they aren’t making exceptions for the third-gen iPad, which lines up with other reports.

Seriously, though, just hold on to your third-gen iPad. It’s still one of best tablets out there.

Surface killing ipad header

The Microsoft Surface, with real productivity apps, a clever keyboard cover and a well-engineered design stands a real chance of cutting into iPad sales… if Microsoft will throw enough money at the marketing.

Is the Microsoft Surface the next killer tablet? All these “killer this” and “killer that” comparisons get out of control. Every new challenger is hyped as the killer of what came before. But sometimes, it’s true. The iPad really turned out to be a PC killer. People bought iPads instead of buying new PCs, and that market took a pretty big hit. Apple pulled this off by building something that changed the rules for a PC, and we saw it differently.

Where the PC was about performance, the iPad was about portability. Where the PC was about mice and keyboards, the iPad opted for touch, and where the PC was generally about productivity, the iPad was about entertainment.

But it forced a hard choice that most of us didn’t really want to make: Tablet or laptop? This was because the iPad was really a netbook that swapped the keyboard and mouse for a touchscreen, and the iPad’s shortcomings made it a very difficult product to live on exclusively. Most iPad buyers had to keep their PCs or buy MacBooks, and that took what was already an expensive solution and increased it.

With the Surface, Microsoft is trying to reverse the deck and do to Apple what Apple did to PC’s.

Productivity

The Surface comes with Microsoft Office, the unchallenged, dominant desktop productivity product in the market. In fact, the ARM-based Surface actually bundles in Office, so you get productivity capability out of the box, putting it ahead of most PCs. But let’s not stop there, because unlike Apple, Microsoft isn’t being as restrictive of apps that fall into their turf. For instance, the apps can share data, so you can be looking up restaurants on one screen, and then simply click to bring up navigation, or some other app that can use the information from that initial screen. Microsoft also designed in a high degree of accuracy, so you can use a stylus, a tool typically preferred over a finger for creating art or editing pictures. These aren’t netbooks with touchscreens instead of keyboards, they are full PCs. That generally means you should be able to leave the laptop at home or in the office more often.

Designed from the inside out

Apple designs from the outside in. While this does result in beautiful products, it also results in painful problems like Antennagate, or cost problems, which may explain why the iPad mini is priced a whopping 60 percent above the rest of the market. This is also why the first iPhone, when it was presented, was pretty much a pretty brick that took months to get working. When car companies take this approach, you get rolling art that costs a fortune to maintain and isn’t very reliable.

Surface tablet microsoft windows 8Microsoft made a big point of designing from the inside out with the surface. Engineers got the product properly equipped, adequately reinforced, and balanced before designers wrapped the result in a pretty case. The end result is a tablet with a screen optimized for movies and video; a balance that makes it feel lighter than it is and with a full set of features. (It’s missing a 4G radio, but because only about 10 percent of tablets have WAN radios turned on.) Microsoft even put in a fast-charge battery, so you can go from dead to near full charge in around two hours. Oh, and another in-your-face move is that while Apple uses magnetic plugs to charge for their laptops (which uniquely saves the laptop if you trip over the cord), it doesn’t appear on the iPad. The Surface does have this magnetic design. When Apple and Microsoft signed the last cross licensing agreement, Microsoft agreed not to copy the iPad. Instead, it ripped a part off the MacBook to improve its own tablet. Now that really is getting in Apple’s face.

The necessity of a keyboard

A few years back, before the iPad, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were on stage, and Bill said something to the effect that tablets were the future for mobile PCs. Steve pretty much said that only idiots would buy a tablet, because a keyboard was simply too irreplaceable.

Now, both the iPad and Surface tablets have optional magnetic covers, but only Microsoft’s comes with a built-in keyboard. This makes it look like the Surface Tablet is a better presentation of Jobs’ vision than the iPad, and that is about as “in your face” as we can get.

I think it would be fun to run the clip of Steve Jobs calling tablets without keyboards stupid right after a clip of Tim Cook talking about tablets with keyboards as the ugly result of refrigerators and toasters mating, and then follow it with the number of iPad keyboards sold (the market for this has turned out to be impressively large).

Marketing is key

After seeing the cringe-worthy Olympic ads that Apple did, I’m convinced that a lot of talented people left the company after Steve Jobs passed. This gives Microsoft the potential to out-market Apple this round. Kathleen Hall’s advertising team at Microsoft is considered one of the best in the business, but Microsoft traditionally under-funds advertising. If it does that here, this potential Apple killer will follow the Zune into the dustbin of history. The initial TV ads are good, but they’ll need Apple-like seeding and sustained marketing programs (read: loads of cash) to assure this “killer” product reaches its potential. If it opens its wallet wide enough for that, Microsoft may do to Apple what Apple did to it with the iPod, iPhone and iPad, and find that revenge can be oh so sweet.

Handson with MSI's S20 Slidebook Windows 8 convertible Ultrabook

We just got some hands-on time with MSI’s latest creation, the S20 Slidebook. This ultra light (2.3 pounds / 1kg) and thin (0.78-inches / 19.8mm) convertible Ultrabook runs Windows 8 (naturally) and packs an Intel Core i5 processor (Ivy Bridge), 4GB RAM and a 128GB mSATA SSD. In front, there’s a gorgeous 11.6-inch 1920×1080-pixel IPS display with a 10-point capacitive multitouch layer plus an HD front-facing camera. A glossy white plastic bezel surrounds the glass panel and incorporates the MSI logo and the Windows button. The back cover is made of a silver magnesium alloy with matching plastic antenna covers for the built-in WiFi b/g/n, WiDi and Bluetooth 4.0 radios. Most of the ports are on the right edge along with the power / lock key and LED indicators — this includes the power input, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, a mini-HDMI output and a pair of USB 3.0 connectors. You’ll find a gigabit Ethernet port on the left side plus an SD card reader, orientation lock button and volume rocker in back.

Of course, what sets the S20 apart is its ability to switch instantly from a tablet into a usable laptop. The screen slides up and tilts forward to reveal a chiclet keyboard with excellent key travel and decent spacing. You’re not limited to any specific angle here — the display is fully adjustable from flat to almost perpendicular with the keyboard. The sealed 3-cell 3900mAh battery is rated for 7 hours of continuous operation. We spent a few minutes using the Slidebook and came away pretty impressed — it’s incredibly light for its size, the screen is bright and crisp, and the keyboard is comfortable. Even in prototype form, performance and buid-quality are top-notch. MSI plans to make its convertible Ultrabook available late November for $1,099 through major US retailers both online and in stores. The company expects to sell other configurations in other markets as well. Take a look at our gallery below and hit the break for our hands-on video.
