What is worship to you? Does your definition of worship match Yahweh’s? Is worship about your relationship with Yah or is it a show or program. Is it time for you to display your skills and talents? Do you go through a set routine or do you allow the Holy Spirit to have his way? What is worship to you? In this passage, Jesus changes man's concept and approach to worship.

John 4:15-24 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

15 The woman *said to Him, “[a]Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” 16 He *said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” 19 The woman *said to Him, “[b]Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 God is [c]spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

While talking to the woman of Samaria, Jesus made it clear that there is true worship and false worship. There is both intelligent worship and ignorant worship. What is marketed as worship in many churches today may not be acceptable to Yahweh. Many of us still have a Pharisee mentality and honor God with our mouth but our hearts are far from Him (Matt. 15:8-9).

Check out John 15-19. Yeshua (Jesus)  exposed and confronted the woman's sin, she could have responded by arguing or ignoring him, but she was convinced she knew Yeshua could bring her closer to God. She knew she had to deal with her sin to worship. So the woman realized she had to be transformed. This happens when men go to Yahweh  firsthand. You will have an immediate experience with Yah. You will become transformed. The Greek word Metamorphosis means “to be changed into another form,” but this change comes from within (Metamorphosis).

 Are you a transformer?

  1. Transformers are participants, but most Christians want a show led by a professional staff.
  2. Transformers wait for God to make them over. Most Christians want results now.
  3. Transformers quietly resist the “celebrity attitude” and don’t look for MVP preachers.
  4. Transformers trust God to do his work as they worship, but conformers run from seminar to seminar looking for Fads.
  5. Transformers are not impressed by budgets and buildings.

Ok now let's look at John 4: 20-21 The woman realized she must worship God, but were?  By saying “a time is coming” Yeshua is saying a historic event was going to take place that would change how and where they worship. The event was the death and resurrection of The Son Of Yah. Now Yahweh does not live in buildings but in our hearts. Now, where we worship is not important anymore! How we worship and who we worship is!

Check out Psalms 115:1-8. The writer is showing us there will be losses when we don’t worship the true God.

  1. (V5). They have mouths, but they do not speak, no promises.
  2. (v5). They have eyes, but do not see any protection. I will guide you with my eye (Ps. 32:8).
  3. (v6). They have ears, but they do not hear prayer.
  4. (v6). Noses they have, but they do not smell, no praise. “And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma (Gen. 8:21). That smells as from Noah’s burnt offerings.
  5.  (v7). They have hands, but do not handle (feel) no power.
  6. (v7). Feet they have, but do not walk, no presence.
  7. (v8). Those who make them are like them; so is everyone who trusts in them. “No progress”

I know, you are asking, what does this have to do with us? Do we have idols? Yes we make them at times

  1. Our preachers and pastors
  2. Our church
  3. Our agenda
  4. The cross
  5. Our Bible

Ok, back to John, looking at 4:23-24 we learn that authentic worshippers worship God in spirit and in truth. What does that even mean? To worship Yah in spirit means to worship Yahweh… with all of our heart seeking the most intimate fellowship with him. You  allow the Holy Spirit only to guide and lead your worship. Not a program or our own Ideas and thoughts

To worship God in truth means…

  1. To approach God in the right or true way. The only way to God is through Jesus.
  2. To worship God in truth is to give him your all.

Worshiping Yahweh’s way is dangerous. It means the end of Christian’s consumerism. Some churches would go out of business, but it’s  worship that would be fresh and new every time and there would be more unity in the body. But there is something we need to always understand, the prerequisite for worshipping God in spirit and in truth is humility.
