The move by the Mexican government to officially recognize Afro-Mexicans in the Latin American country has been hailed as a step in the right direction as Latin Americans of African descent continue with their quest for racial equality.

The Huffingpost Post reported that 1.38 million Mexicans of African descent have now been recognized, something that has been illusive since the Mexican Revolution in 1910. For all these years, the Latin American nation has ignored African

The family of Sandra Bland, the Illinois woman found dead in a Texas jail cell last month, filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Houston seeking to hold people involved in her death accountable.

“We are looking for Waller County and the individuals involved to take accountability,” said Cannon Lambert Sr., who is representing the family.

The lawsuit is filed against Trooper Brian Encinia, the sheriff of Waller County, Texas, two of the jailers and the Texas Department of Public Safety, Lambert said.

Waller County, Texas, has had a complicated racial history since the days when it was a part of Mexico. At one of its first settlements, Bernardo Plantation, about 100 slaves grew cotton on  a large farm on the banks of the Brazos. Yet in the years before Texas fought Mexico for its independence, the area became a magnet for free blacks from elsewhere in the South who sought a welcoming home.

The messy, confusing double legacy of that history has persisted to the present, most recently embo

Saturday downtown march Barbara Haddock Taylor, Baltimore Sun Dozens of protesters march up Calvert Street in support of amnesty for those arrested during the recent Freddie Gray protests

Few dozen protesters marched across downtown Baltimore Saturday airing more than just concerns over the death of Freddie Gray.

The group, led by the Rev. Cortly “C.D.” Witherspoon, chanted the familiar “No justice, no peace” refrain that has echoed across the city since the 25-year-old Gray suffered a spinal injury while in police custody last month.

But they also spoke out against the state’s approval this week of a $30 million youth jail, called for amnesty for those still facing charges

The black man courting crowds of white conservatives doesn’t seem like the same guy that H. Westley Phillips once idolized. Phillips still relishes the day he heard Ben Carson inspire minority students at Yale University with his story of persistence. He can still feel the nervous anticipation he had while waiting in line to shake Carson’s hand.

After the speech, Phillips followed Carson’s path and began to study neurosurgery.

“I had come from a public school in Tulsa and came from a single

AT&T Inc. on Tuesday confirmed that it has fired Aaron Slator, a president who became the subject of a $100 million discrimination lawsuit for using his work phone to send racially offensive images.

“There is no place for demeaning behavior within AT&T and we regret the action was not taken earlier,” the company said.

The images in question were found on Slator’s phone by an assistant who was asked to transfer data to a new phone

No way this can happen in our city.

That’s the message Ray Lewis has in light of the horrible riots that have ensued in his adopted hometown of Baltimore the past two days, with the National Guard being called in for support.

The former Baltimore Ravens great posted a video on Youtube, calling for peace in a time of madness.

“Young kids, you gotta understand something,” an impassioned Lewis pleads. “Get off the streets. Violence is not the answer. Violence has never been the answer.”

News that Trevor Noah would replace Jon Stewart as the new host of “The Daily Show” brought a collective round of applause for the South African comedian and his “fresh” perspective and “fresh takes on race.” Critics have long lamented the lack of color among late-night TV hosts, and now a black man has gotten one of the plum hosting gigs.

Noah might look like an enlightened choice, but his routines show he isn’t — his jokes often hing
