Alabama, which handed Mississippi State its first loss on Saturday, moved from No. 5 to No. 1 in the College Football Playoff Top 25 released Tuesday night.

Yet Mississippi State also stayed firm in the Playoff race, falling only to No. 4. The Bulldogs are one of three one-loss teams in the top four, joining No. 2 Oregon and No. 3 Florida State.

Alabama will begin this season the way it ended the last two -- No. 1.
Nick Saban's two-time defending national champions are top-ranked in The Associated Press preseason college football poll, with the Crimson Tide trying to become the first team to win three straight national titles.
