Maria Von Trapp, the real-life Maria depicted in "The Sound of Music" said, "music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens." I agree. During a run, a good song can be the key to make my heart and legs work harder. When it feels like the alarm went off way too early, music acts like a key to wake up my eyes and heart and get me going.
And when the songs I listen to are spiritual songs, not only do my legs and eyes work better, but my heart and soul feel unlocked to better experience god's love. God created music, and he created us. And when we sing music to him something powerful happens. The Apostle Paul wrote a letter to the Church in Ephesus warning them to stop wasting their time being foolish and thoughtless. In Ephesians 5:18-19, he tells them, "instead be filled with the Spirit, "speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and songs from the spirit. "sing and make music from your heart to the lord." Paul knew long before maria or I did that singing, specifically singing songs to God, opens our hearts. when we sing to Jesus, we turn our focus to him. we fill ourselves up with truths about christ. His Holy Spirit pours in. Hymns and spiritual songs help keep our minds locked on jesus and away from foolish desires and unnecessary worries. So, the next time you face something challenging, whether a temptation, a fear, or just getting stuck in traffic, instead of being foolish, worried, or thoughtless, why not sing a spiritual song and allow god to unlock your heart and fill it with joy, love, and peace.
