Former NFL coach Tony Dungy would be fine with signing ex-Baltimore Ravens and Rutgers running back Ray Rice, even with all the baggage and media attention he’d bring with him.

Here’s what Dungy said on Sunday’s “Football Night in America”:

“I would [pick up Rice] under one condition. Ray Rice made a terrible mistake, but he paid the penalty from the League and from the legal system. I would have to talk to him and say, ‘Have you learned from this?’ (I’d) look in his eye and see if he has learned from his mistake. Then I’d be okay to sign him. … You also have to weigh is he okay paying a penalty like everyone does and then moving on with his life?”

The video of Ray Rice punching his fiancee inside a casino elevator was sent to NFL headquarters to the attention of league security chief Jeffrey Miller in April, a law enforcement official says.

“Since the NFLPA and NFL have launched separate investigations into the league and the Ravens’ handling of Ray Rice’s case, I want to make a few things clear. No one from the NFL ever asked me for the inside-elevator video,” the official said Thursday. “I mailed it anonymously to Jeff Miller because he’s their head of security. I attached a note saying: ‘Ray Rice elevator video. You have to see it. It’s terrible.’ I provided a number for a disposable cellphone and asked for confirmation that it was received. I knew there was a possibility Mr. Miller may not get the video, but I hoped it would land in the right hands.”

Miller, in London preparing for the Raiders-Dolphins game Sunday, issued a statement to the AP Thursday night through an NFL spokesman.

“I unequivocally deny that I received at any time a copy of the video, and I had not watched it until it was made public on September 8,” he said.

Miller joined the league in 2008 as director of strategic security and was promoted to chief security officer in April 2011. Before joining the NFL, Miller spent nearly six years as the commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police. He worked for the state police for 24 years.

At the NFL, Miller’s responsibilities include overseeing investigative programs and services. He is also in charge of event security and game integrity. When players get arrested, the NFL’s corps of investigators rarely get involved, leaving that to local law enforcement. The league’s security operatives gather court documents and police reports available to the public, but don’t ordinarily interview witnesses or gather evidence independently.

It remains unclear what happened to the video once it arrived at league offices. There are two NFL executives named Jeffrey Miller, but the law enforcement official didn’t know that, and intended it to go to the chief of security. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the other Jeffrey Miller — who is involved in lobbying for the league — did not report receiving the video.

The law enforcement official said he wanted to make sure the NFL had the video before deciding on Rice’s punishment.

“My intention wasn’t to bring down Commissioner Goodell or anyone else at the NFL,” he said.

He said he didn’t know the identity of the woman who left him the voicemail. He said he chose Miller because of his law enforcement background, even though he didn’t know him personally.

Rice, a former Pro Bowl running back for the Baltimore Ravens, was arrested in Atlantic City on an assault charge for hitting Janay Palmer in February. A police summons stated that Rice had struck Palmer with his hand, knocking her unconscious. Rice has been accepted into New Jersey’s pretrial intervention program, which enabled him to avoid jail time and could result in having the charge expunged from his record.

Initially, Goodell suspended Rice — who has since married Palmer — for two games. After criticism, Goodell announced new stiffer penalties for future domestic violence cases. After video of the punch in the casino elevator was released, the Ravens cut Rice and Goodell suspended him indefinitely.

League and Ravens officials said they requested the video from law enforcement but were denied. ESPN and others have reported that the Ravens had a detailed description of the video shortly after Rice was arrested.

After the AP reported that the video was sent to NFL headquarters, Goodell announced that former FBI Director Robert Mueller would lead an internal investigation. That probe is ongoing, and there is no timetable for its completion.

The law enforcement official said he does not want to speak to NFL investigators, and Mueller, who is now in private practice with a Washington law firm with deep ties to the NFL, has no subpoena power. “I know nothing else about this case,” the official said.

Former FBI Chief of Staff Aaron Zebley, who is working with Mueller on the investigation, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.

By now you’ve undoubtedly heard about the horrific video of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice knocking his then-fiancée unconscious inside a casino elevator. The Ravens have terminated Rice’s contract, and the NFL has placed him on indefinite suspension.

Rice’s actions were reprehensible, and the NFL’s handling of the matter at this point has been questionable at best, and shameful at worst.

Now, what should Christians make of all this? The first thing is perhaps the hardest but certainly the most important. We should pray for Rice and his family. All of us stand in need of God’s grace, and we serve a God who can redeem anything and anyone. We serve a Savior who died for every man and woman, no matter how vile their actions or deep their deceptions. To refuse to pray is to deny these basic tenets of our faith.

And second, we should ask ourselves some long-overdue questions about how we play and watch the games we do.

The Rice story was only the latest in a never-ending series of tales that are more apt for “America’s Most Wanted” than Monday Night Football. Scarcely a fortnight goes by when we don’t read about an NFL player—or in the case of the Indianapolis Colts, an owner—being arrested for serious offenses that would land most ordinary Americans behind bars.

And then there’s the concussion issue. It’s become clear that the people we watch on Saturdays and Sundays are, like other athletes in a handful of other sports, taking serious risks with their long-term health.

And yet we choose not to see these things as we continue to watch our games.

Bill Simmons of ESPN summed up the attitude of most fans when he wrote that, despite what’s going on off the field, “we care [about the NFL] just as much as we always did. [And] We look the other way as much as we always did.”

We might say, in fact, that Americans suffer from an epidemic of not looking.

High powered backing for former Secretary of State to rescue America’s most popular sport

Support is growing for a campaign to draft Condoleezza Rice as Commissioner for the troubled National Football League (NFL).

American football, the country’s most popular sport and a bastion of macho male culture, has suffered one of the worst weeks in its history with three high-profile stars facing accusations of domestic violence.

The crisis has led to calls for Ms Rice, a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, to step in replace the beleaguered Roger Goodell as Commissioner.

As far back as 2002 Ms Rice described becoming NFL Commissioner as her dream job.

Now she is getting serious backing, including from former members of the Bush administration, for taking on the task of rescuing a sport whose image has taken a severe battering over the last seven days.

Earlier this week the Washington Post carried a piece by a member of its editorial board calling for Ms Rice, 59, to take over from Mr Goodell, who has come under fire over his handling of the domestic violence scandal which has engulfed the sport.

Politicians and women’s groups were enraged by the NFL’s decision to impose what they regarded as an inadequate two match ban on Ray Rice, the Baltimore Ravens’ running back who knocked his fiancée out cold in the lift of a New Jersey casino.

He belatedly received an indefinite ban after footage of the incident was released by TMZ, a gossip website.

Mr Goodell insisted NFL officials had not seen the incriminating tape when the original ban was imposed.

This has now been disputed and several senators have called for him to step down.

“If he lied to the American people, he has to step down,” said Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat senator for New York.

The Mr Goodell’s plight was worsened when the indefinite ban was attacked by Rice’s wife – the victim of the original assault – who took to the social media to back her husband.

The Washington Post did not mince its words in condemning Mr Goodell and backing Ms Rice.

“Roger Goodell has made a mess of it. Time for the former Secretary of State with an intense love of the game to step in and save the NFL,” the Washington Post wrote.

The emergence of the Ray Rice video and his subsequent suspension from the NFL has put Mayweather’s history of domestic violence issues back in the spotlight. Mayweather was sentenced to 90 days in jail in 2011 after pleading guilty to a domestic battery charge. Mayweather was released after serving two of the three months in 2012, and has since been the highest-paid athlete in the world.

Mayweather defended Rice this week, saying “I think there’s a lot worse things that go on in other people’s households,” and later apologized for his comments. In an interview with CNN, Rachel Nichols asked Mayweather on the issue, and Mayweather did his best to dance around the questions.

“Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion, you know? When it’s all said and done, only God can judge me.”

The comedian and View co-host does more mansplaining when it comes to domestic violence.

Whoopi Goldberg is quickly becoming an advocate for men who inflict domestic violence upon women. You may recall back in May, during the Solange Knowles-and-Jay Z elevator fight, that Goldberg said Jay Z had every right to hit Solange back.

“I think Solange was quite ready for him to do whatever he was going to do,” Goldberg said. “This is the thing: If anybody hits you, you have the right—I know that many people are raised in a very different way—but if a woman hits you, to me, you have the right to hit her back.”

Now Goldberg is singing the same song, but to the tune of a different celebrity caught up in his own domestic violence comments.

Last Friday, during an episode of ESPN’s First Take, Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless had a heated debate over the Baltimore Ravens’ suspension of Ray Rice for two games. Many people felt the suspension was too lenient, especially since video captured Rice dragging his then-fiancee, Janay Palmer, out of an elevator unconscious.

Smith’s perspective fell within two stances. Even though he stated that a man should never hit a woman under any circumstances, he also stated that he tells the women in his family that they should never “provoke” a man.

In a Friday discussion on First Take about Ray Rice’s controversial two-game suspension, Stephen A. Smith went off the rails, delivering a rant that implied some women are to blame for domestic violence.

Smith started off his discussion with Skip Bayless by saying men “have no business putting [their] hands on a woman.” It was everything First Take isn’t: concise, definitive and unequivocal.

But Smith didn’t stop there. He continued, going on a rambling, circuitous rant that seemed to suggest violence is sometimes warranted if it’s provoked. Even for the unrefined First Take, with its bluster, manufactured controversy and complete lack of nuance, this was over the line.

“We know you have no business putting your hands on a woman. I don’t know how many times I got to reiterate that. But as a man who was raised by women, see I know what I’m going to do if somebody touches a female member of my family. I know what I’m going to do, I know what my boys are going to do. I know what, I’m going to have to remind myself that I work for the Worldwide Leader, I’m going to have to get law enforcement officials involved because of what I’m going to be tempted to do. But what I’ve tried to employ the female members of my family, some of who you all met and talked to and what have you, is that again, and this what, I’ve done this all my life, let’s make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions, because if I come, or somebody else come, whether it’s law enforcement officials, your brother or the fellas that you know, if we come after somebody has put their hands on you, it doesn’t negate the fact that they already put their hands on you. So let’s try to make sure that we can do our part in making sure that that doesn’t happen.”

Chalk up some of it to the perils of being on live television without a net. Smith goes around and around before getting to his point. You can almost hear the regret while he’s delivering the kicker. He quickly tries to backtrack, but only manages to dig himself in deeper, even while acknowledging Rice deserves more than his two-game suspension.

“Now you got some dudes that are just horrible and they’re going to do it anyway, and there’s never an excuse to put your hands on a woman. But domestic violence or whatever the case may be, with men putting their hands on women, is obviously a very real, real issue in our society. And I think that just talking about what guys shouldn’t do, we got to also make sure that you can do your part to do whatever you can do to make, to try to make sure it doesn’t happen. We know they’re wrong. We know they’re criminals. We know they probably deserve to be in jail. In Ray Rice’s case, he probably deserves more than a 2-game suspension which we both acknowledged. But at the same time, we also have to make sure that we learn as much as we can about elements of provocation. Not that there’s real provocation, but the elements of provocation, you got to make sure that you address them, because we’ve got to do is do what we can to try to prevent the situation from happening in any way. And I don’t think that’s broached enough, is all I’m saying. No point of blame.”

Somewhere buried under all those words is a real discussion. Unfortunately, it’s entirely obscured by the larger message — the tone-deaf observation that women shouldn’t provoke violence from men.

ESPN did not immediately return a request for comment, though Smith tried to clarify his statements on Twitter.

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was indicted by a grand jury Thursday on third-degree aggravated assault for allegedly striking his fiancée unconscious last month.

Rice was arrested and charged with simple assault-domestic violence on Feb. 15 after a physical altercation with his fiancée, Janay Palmer, at the Revel Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J. Palmer also was charged with simple assault.

Conviction of a third-degree crime in New Jersey carries a potential prison sentence of at least three years and up to five years, and a fine that could be up to $15,000.

A video obtained and posted online by TMZ showed Rice lifting Palmer by her arms out of an elevator and laying her on the floor. Rice’s attorney, Michael Diamondstein, has said the footage is authentic but incomplete.

“I have been advised by the prosecutor’s office that an indictment has been returned,” Diamondstein told ESPN on Thursday afternoon. “And again, we deny that he committed an aggravated assault. We don’t think the law would support that [he did]. And we just ask the public to reserve judgment until all of the facts are out.”

The Ravens released a statement Thursday that read: “This is part of the due process for Ray. We know there is more to Ray Rice than this one incident.”
