There is not a marriage counselor, self-help book, or marriage retreat that can save a marriage as much as the Bible. God’s Word is equipped to provide help for whatever circumstances we face while married.

Here are ten verses that can help to save and heal your struggling marriage. They are verses to remind us what love is and what God has created in your union with your spouse.

1. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up…Love never fails.”

This is a condensed version of one of the most popular verses used in wedding ceremonies, as it states what love is through the eyes of God. The love described here is one that is not out for itself, but is considerate of others and remains through the good times and bad.

It lists several attributes we should understand that would help a marriage thrive, as well as reminders of what love is about when the issues of marriage have distracted us from its true meaning from God.

2. 1 Peter 3:7

“Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.”

Before anyone scoffs at the referencing of the wife as the “weaker vessel,” the essence of the verse is to say that it is the husband’s duty to honor, love, and protect his wife with all they face. The second half of the verse says “heirs,” which means that God sees men and women as equals together for the grace of life.

So what the verse is really about is advising husbands to understand and honor your wife, as she looks to you for protection, love, and care. The same also applies to women in view of their husbands.

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.”

Probably one of the most admirable verses in the Bible in relation to marriage, this verse really drives home the point of how husbands should love their wives. There is no greater example of love than our Savior, Jesus Christ, who loved us, the church, so much that He went to the cross to die for our sins when He was sinless.

When husbands love their wives like Christ loved the church, sacrificing and loving them despite flaws and struggles exemplifies what it means to love unconditionally.

4. Ephesians 5:33

“Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”

Husbands, though this verse starts off advising you how to love your wife, it concludes with advising wives what to do for husbands. If you have read any research on what women and men want in marriage, you will see that women want to feel loved while men want to be respected in a marriage.

This verse embodies this research (learned well after the Bible) in that men and women should understand what their spouse needs most in their marriage.

5. Genesis 2:18

“And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’”

Some may see this verse and reject it right away, because it doesn’t consider those that truly love being single or who have found pursuing love not worth the effort. However, this verse focuses instead on showing what God knows of us, His children, and how He saw that Adam was alone but shouldn’t be.

If God wants you to have a spouse, He will go to great lengths for this union to happen, knowing you both will become better versions of yourselves because of it.

“Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.”

These are classic verses of the Bible that modern times could view as ancient and almost “sexist” now. But with closer examination, God states that this treatment of one another is not at the expense of the other person. Wives are to submit to their husband’s authority, but God determines how much of that is appropriate, not the husband. Husbands are to love their wives and not act rude or bitter to them.

When husbands and wives look at these verses, this is marriage advice at its finest. It is about loving the other person more than the other person loving you.

7. Mark 10:8-9

“‘And the two shall become one flesh’; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

These two verses are like 1 Corinthians 13, as they are typically heard most during someone’s wedding (such as my wedding). Just as stated in Genesis 2:18, God knows what He is doing when He brings two people together and in these two verses, it is a blending of souls, bodies, and personalities to where one is not without the other.

Now, Jesus (who stated these verses) didn’t say that a couple is basically to become a carbon copy of each other, but more to say that once God has united a couple, it is a uniting of spirit that no one should separate, including man. Their union furthers His kingdom, as well as builds up their potential for growth and love.

"An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.”

In no way is God saying here that wives are only to make their husbands look good; it is more to say that when a wife is the best version of herself, she not only shines, but so does her husband. If you are one who always has to get your way, never considers the needs of others, and will fight your husband at every turn on anything, you bring shame not only on yourself, but also on your husband, with whom you are united in spirit and flesh.

It is not saying you can’t be yourself while in the marriage, but God is saying that if you just want to cause unnecessary drama, you are destroying your marriage’s very foundation.

9. 1 John 4:7

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”

Nothing clearer could be stated about the love of God as in this verse, conveying that if we love one another, including our spouses, we are loving God in the process and knowing Him more intimately like our spouses.

Love can be challenging to give when you are in a struggling marriage, but it is what can start building your marriage back up again, if you make the effort to show love through forgiveness, patience, comfort, and being peaceful.

10. Ecclesiastes 4:10

“For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up.”

These last two verses resonate the most in how best to help a struggling marriage heal and bloom again. If your spouse falls down (both literally and physically), you want to be the one to help encourage them back up again. Whether they have suffered a failure, an indiscretion, or are struggling to stay faithful to God, you as their spouse want to be the one there to love, support, and guide them back to solid grounds of faith.

Those who don’t have someone, or are married but the couple isn’t there for each other, means it will be even harder to return back to God without that strong pillar of hope found in a spouse.

These verses are to show you that no matter what issues you are having in your marriage, or if you are at the point of giving up and moving on, God believes in the two of you to dig deep and weather the storm. He saw something special in each of you that He knew would be magnified with your union in marriage, and He knows that you are stronger than you know to work toward the healing of your marriage.

We will close now with a prayer for those of you trying to work through a rough patch in your marriage. Know that God, as well as your family and friends, are there for you to help you and your spouse return to the love that you two once shared.

“Father God, we come before you with sadness in our hearts for marriages that are in fits of struggle right now. We don’t know what the issues might be to cause husbands and wives to be at odds with each other, but we ask that they lay these issues at the feet of Jesus, knowing He died for us so that we could be united with You. By laying these struggles at Your feet, we know the Holy Spirit will lead them on the paths of restoration and recovery to where these marriages will bloom with happiness, laughter, and peace again. We give this to you in Jesus’s name. Amen.”

Meagan Good is proving to be more than just a pretty face capable of portraying a desirable love interest on screen. In her latest film, the Christian actress is serving both laughs and inspiration as she illustrates the struggles that take place on the journey to love.

In the Lifetime Original Movie “Love by the 10th Date,” Good expands her acting chops by taking on the role of the quirky, laugh out loud funny Gabby. When Gabby’s love life takes a turn for the worst, she decides to take a different approach in dating.

Inspired by a column at the Los Angeles digital magazine where she works, Gabby and Nell, played by Kellee Stewart (“The Soul Man”), decide to take on the rule of going out with a man on 10 dates with no sex in order to find love. In an interview with The Christian Post, Good explained why she was so excited to take on a role that viewers have yet to see her tackle.

“I’m always playing the sexy girl, the serious cop, the love interest or whatever it may be. For me, it’s really just about expanding the types of characters that I take on,” she told The Christian Post. “It’s about expanding in the comedy space as well. Usually when I do comedy I get to be a little funny but I’m also the straight man to somebody else’s funny.”

The actress and producer embraced the fact that the Lifetime film would require her not to have the put together image she has become associated with.

“When I read this character I was like, ‘wow I have to go completely all out and be ok with being in a scarf before you go in a wig, weave falling out and just the physicality of it,'” she recalled.

Along with Good, “Love by the 10th Date” stars some other famous faces like Grammy Award-winning singer Kelly Rowland as Margot, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and actress Keri Hilson as Billie (“Think Like a Man”) alongside Stewart whose characters also work with Gabby and help her on the path to love. Since her co-stars are also Christians, Good revealed that the camaraderie was real when the cameras stopped rolling and the down-to-earth entertainers would pray on set with one another.

While viewers will witness their characters navigate the world of dating, marriage and celibacy, Good believes her character could benefit from some God-centered advice.

“I would tell Gabby to be patient, know that God’s timing is perfect. She should use this time that she’s single to focus on bettering her career, getting her life together, getting things set up for what she really desires and her purpose,” Good told CP. “I would say in God’s timing love will come. A lot of times the reason we’re single is because we have to focus on what it is we’re supposed to be doing so that when that person comes along they complement that.”

One evening my friend showed me one of the three decorative plaques that would be part of a wall arrangement in her living room. “See, I’ve already got Love,” she said, holding up the plaque with the word written on it. “Faith and Hope are on order.”

So Love comes first, I thought. Faith and Hope soon follow!

Love did come first. In fact, it originated with God. First John 4:19 reminds us that “We love [God] because he first loved us.” God’s love, described in 1 Corinthians 13 (known as the “love chapter”), explains a characteristic of real love when it says, “Love never fails” (v. 8).

Faith and hope are essential to the believer. It is only because we are justified by faith that “we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom. 5:1). And hope is described in Hebrews 6 as “an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (v. 19).

One day we will have no need of faith and hope. Faith will become sight and our hope will be realized when we see our Savior face to face. But love is eternal, for love is of God and God is love (1 John 4:7-8). “Now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love”—it’s first and last (1 Cor. 13:13).

Due to their interesting choices in programming, VH1 might be better referred to as “The Evil Empire.” Their endless stream of reality TV shows tend to focus on taking otherwise irrelevant black people and making them as recognizable as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (I’m serious: There are black kids who could identify a Basketball Wife before they could identify Dr. King – don’t even try Malcolm X or Harriet Tubman). There is then this awkward rat race, where famous people with no talent end up doing outrageous and embarrassing things so they can remain in the public eye.

It’s sad. It’s annoying. It’s degrading. Sometimes, it’s just downright embarrassing. Not that we should spend all of our time being worried about what white people think about us, but our people are far more dignified and diverse than the coonery that reality TV executives love to market and elevate. Bill Cosby’s shows used to make black kids want to attend HBCUs, but VH1′s shows are putting our kids into rehab and STD clinics. This is not a good tradeoff for our people.

So, here are a few ways that VH1 just might a psychological version of the Tuskegee Experiment:

1) Promoting sloppy and tragic decision-making: A teacher recently told me about a little girl in her first grade class who was asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” She said, “I want to be a basketball wife” (as if this were a real profession). Stories like this remind us that our kids are always watching and that the entertainment they absorb is (as Dr. Christopher Emdin at Columbia University so eloquently explains) a form of education. Not only are they learning about possible career choices, they are also learning about life choices: Sleeping with the wrong person, having a baby at the wrong time, spending their money in the wrong way and valuing the wrong things. Then, when that little girl is 31 years old with no education and four baby’s daddies, and also can’t figure out why she’s so depressed that she’s unable to get out of bed in the morning, we wonder how she ended up in such a hopeless predicament.

2) You’re now helping people to sell sexx tapes? It’s one thing that the 44-year old single mother Mimi Faust is celebrating her inner freak by promoting a dirty tape, that’s her right. But it’s another thing that VH1 is helping to promote the tape in order to improve ratings for her show. Maybe this is where the FCC should step in and say, “Hmmm, maybe we shouldn’t have a show on the public airwaves that mass promotes the idea of making a dirty tape in order to pay the bills.” Maybe someone needs to stand in front of their building with picket signs. Maybe a group of psychologists should come forward and share the findings of research showing that marketing messages actually do impact the thinking of young children. Should we do something about this, or should we just act like none of this makes a difference in our society?

I won’t even talk about Mimi’s poor daughter, whose friends at school are going to be able to look her naked mother up on the Internet. I hope Mimi’s daughter knows how to defend herself from bullies, since the rumors in middle school are going to be so vicious that she’ll need both Dr. Phill AND Iyanla Vanzant to get over the trauma. I should probably call my mother up and thank her for not becoming a 44-year old pοrn star.

3) Making unhealthy, self-destructive people into role models in the African American community: Seriously, can you please explain what talent most of the members of Basketball Wives possess other than being able to get a rich athlete to sleep with them? Wait…maybe that is a special talent….the kind that men pay for on street corners late at night. From what I understand, most of the “Basketball Wives” were never wives at all. Shouldn’t they just be called “Basketball Baby’s mamas” instead? Most reality TV stars aren’t famous for having a talent…instead, they’re just famous for being famous.

Also, we can’t be upset with people who are simply responding to whatever mental illness they developed from the trauma they endured as children. Stevie J, the man who’s piled up so many baby’s mamas that he’s now a million dollars behind in child support (I’m not joking), says that he is a womanizer because his mother abandoned him. I feel bad for him, I really do. But when we celebrate the self-destructive manifestation of a person’s untreated mental illness, we turn it from something that must be confronted to a thing that is now being celebrated.

Ja Rule has had a difficult relation with church starting with his Jehovah's Witness background. So he has been a bit uncomfortable with people asking him if he was 'saved' during his church tour with the movie 'I'm in Love With a Church Girl'.

In a conversation with HuffPost Live host Marc Lamont Hill, the rapper explained that he didn't 'feel a part of it" and shared his suspicion that when church people say 'come as you are' they don't really mean it.

However, a recent experience at a church in New York City began to change his mind about church and God. Watch the above video to find out what happened.

"If I was ever going to be depressed, that would have been the time," recalled Ed. "But Tina and the kids kept me from it."

Their daughter's loss was a test the Greens would not have passed had they not resolved early on to make their marriage work.

When they said, "I do," 52 years ago, they enlisted in a difficult challenge. As a Marine, Ed had to travel often and sometimes far away, leaving Tina to fill the role of both mother and father.

But Tina accepted the mission readily. The daughter of a Philadelphia cab driver, she grew up watching her mother raise the family while her father worked six-and-a-half days a week to provide. "It wasn't my job to make [Ed's] job harder," she said. "It was my job to make it work."

Imitating her mother, Tina supported Ed while keeping the children active in sports, music, and the arts. She also earned two master's degrees and worked in family therapy. Meanwhile, Ed excelled at work, including one post as the commander of an infantry battalion overseas.

Living apart in different cities or together at home, commitment to the Bible, each other, and their children made the family work. It took resolve, since Tina came from a family whose parents stayed married, while Ed's parents separated when he was a baby. Ed had a harder time envisioning a successful marriage and identifying the threats.

This difference surfaced during one conflict when Tina challenged Ed on how much time he spent at work. "Ed said, 'Maybe military families can't make it,'" Tina recalled. "I lost it! I told him there was absolutely no chance that was going to happen."
