Deepspace5
The Blueprint 3 Outtakes

Jay-Z's album, The Blueprint 3, was one of 2009's most successful mainstream releases. During its pre-production stages, freelance producer/beatmaker Alex Goose composed some tracks that that he submitted to Jay-Z in hopes that he would use them on The Blueprint 3. Unfortunately for Goose, none of his beats made the cut, despite their quality and the fact that they sounded like beats you would hear on a Jay-Z album. But Goose was so proud of these beats that he had to share them, and he released them as a free download on his website for anyone who wanted them. This is where Deepspace5 comes in. While working on The Future Ain't What It Used To Be, they took time off, got Goose's tracks (which he titled The Blueprint 3 Outtakes), and composed thirteen fabulous hip hop tracks.

DS5's version of The Blueprint 3 Outtakes (which keep the same title) features five of the seven emcees in the group (there's no Listener or Sev Statik on this mixtape). Despite the release being so out-of-nowhere and having no record label backing, it's still as high quality of an album as DS5 fans have come to expect. Fred B is at the top of his game in "We In Here" and "Goose Needs This" (originally titled "Hova Needs This" on Goose's mixtape). sintax.the.terrific gets his own track on the low-key "Dear Daisy," and the similarly-titled "Dear Winter" gets the similar, one-emcee treatment with the similar-sounding manCHILD, getting a minute to himself. Sivion leads off the thumping beats of "No One Rides For Free," rapping about the free gift of "grace and eternity," while also tearing up the opening track "We In Here."

5PRINT MIXTAPE by Deepspace5

Playdough and manCHILD are featured most prominently in this mixtape, both appearing on nearly every track. What's interesting is that, while each of the emcees have their own flow style, and they do their own thing here as well, Playdough and manCHILD change theirs up a little. It's definitely due to the beats, which don't really reflect most (or any) of what you'd hear on their own albums. And they both do a great job adapting. Playdough's style seems to have changed the most. The mixtape highlight "Goose Needs This" showcases his usual sound (reminding me a little of his solo track "Don't Drink The Water"), but "Check Me Out Now" has him doing more of a gangsta sound, and his verse in "Brakes" makes his sound comparable to Jay-Z (appropriately enough).

You know you can always count on Deepspace5 to produce a fantastic album. Goose's beats were fresh and clean by themselves, and adding DS5's verses only made them better. Read More Here

Malachi: Why did you call your new album "Group Therapy"?

Sivion: I work in the healthcare staffing industry with physical and occupational therapists. One type of treatment that we see in this field is "group therapy". So when I decided to make this record one that would feature collaborations on most of the songs, I adopted the familiar term for the title. My music has always been considered "feel good" hip hop and I've been told that it puts people in a good mood and helps them get into a more positive mind-state. So this record is providing that same therapy but from the efforts of a group of like-minded artists willing to share their love for the same God I serve. "Group Therapy" fit perfectly with my vision for the project.

I read an interview where you said the main concept behind Group Therapy is “unity”. I feel like that's something that is missing in Christian Hip Hop. What lead you to want to use that concept?

You hit it right on the head. I agree with you totally. There's not enough unity in Christian Hip Hop, so I wanted to create some unity, not only among the artists on the album to promote future collaborations among them, but I also wanted to remind the genre of some of the pioneers who helped build it. There are lots of younger cats getting most of the shine right now, but the veterans on my record from crews like Deepspace5, Tunnel Rats, Future Shock, etc. have been around for decades. Some of them might not currently have the same label resources backing them like back in the day, so I wanted to showcase them in the hopes that it promotes collaborations with some of the artists that are hotter right now......thus bridging the gap between the old school, new school, underground, mainstream, etc.

What do you feel needs to be done to create more unity in Christianity and in Christian Hip Hop?

I think it just comes down to everyone loving on each other more and stopping all the judgmental behavior. We all serve the same God and love the same Savior, Jesus Christ. So it doesn't matter what we're doing to advance the Kingdom, as long as we're doing SOMETHING to advance the Kingdom. Everyone has different gifts, talents, and responsibilities. If everyone does their job and encourages and supports others in doing their job, then there'll be more unity, no question. So if I'm doing underground rap and you're doing mainstream rap, then we need to support and encourage each other in our faith and in continuing to do what God has called each of us to do, even if I personally don't connect with the angle that you're using to get the job done. That's unconditional love and support. We need that more in The Body.

Back in the day an album cover was a work of art. People even collected album covers. But now it seems like artist don't care about album covers like they used to. I have even seen projects that didn't have a cover. The cover for "Group Therapy" is a real work of art. Did you work with the artist to create it and what message are you trying to send through the piece? Yes, I specifically enlisted

Samax Amen from ghettomanga.com because I knew he could take a pic from one of my photo shoots and turn it into a work of art. The idea was to create an image that would be memorable and fun. For the cover, instead of having a group of people following a superhero down the street, we thought it would be really fresh if we had a group of superheroes following a normal dude down the street. So Samax got in the lab, worked hard at it, and ended up doing an amazing job pulling off that cover concept for me.

Of course you have a lot of ill emcees on the album but you worked with some amazing producers too. And you play with different flavors as far as production goes. Were you involved with the production process or did you just pick the beats you liked?

For the most part, I picked beats that created a specific vibe or mood with the production elements. Though I didn't sit in on production sessions with the producers, I did do the sequencing on about half of them, so I like to think that I was a part of the post-production process. These producers really came with it and I am honored to be able to work with such talented beat-smiths, several of which are doing things at a much higher level than myself, winning Grammy and Dove awards.

How long did it take you to record "Group Therapy"?

I actually started on this record before working on Butterfly Sessions (which released in 2010). And this record was originally slated to be released on Hip Hop IS Music (Braille's old label). But some set-backs sparked the change in focus toward doing the Butterfly Sessions project with Dert, instead. Then after that project had run the full course of its media/buzz cycle, I started working on Group Therapy again. By that time, Group Therapy was starting to develop into a project that would be better suited for Illect Recordings vs. Humble Beast Records (Braille's current label with Odd Thomas). So that's the direction I chose to go. And since I was only about 3 songs into Group Therapy when I switched my focus over to the Butterfly Sessions project, the majority of the Group Therapy writing and recording took place in the past 2 years.

What are some of the challenges you faced along the way?

The biggest challenge, when you're dealing with this many artists, is just getting all the verses, beats, cuts, vocals, etc. turned in. Let's face it, I can't afford to bring everyone to Dallas, TX to record in person, so most artists had to record in their own studios and send me the files to mix into my studio song sessions. So staying on top of everyone and keeping track of everything is always a challenge. I gotta hand it to everyone on the project, though. They are all professionals and really were such a blessing to work with from start to finish.

Was there anyone that you wanted to work with on this project but it didn't work out?

I was hoping to work with Braille and Odd Thomas on a song, but it just didn't work out. They were knee deep in trying to create their first Beautiful Eulogy album "Satelite Kite" (which is AMAZING by the way) and just didn't have the time to pull away for a collaboration. But it's cool though, no hard feelings. I respect those dudes a ton. I really love what they're doing and I know our genre needs what they have to offer. I also was hoping to get Theory Hazit on a track too, but that also didn't work out. He did produce a track, but I couldn't get him on the raps. Regardless, the project has an amazing list of emcees on it, so it was probably best that some of those slots went to artists that I had yet to work with in the past.

It can be hard for some artist to balance a relationship with Yahweh, family, and music. How do you make it work?

When you have God leading your life, then you have the ultimate organizer managing all aspects of your life, including family and music. I just let the Holy Spirit give me direction on where to place my priorities on a day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute basis. He doesn't make mistakes and He'll never lead me astray. It's tough at times but it all works out in His perfect design. Otherwise I'd have absolutely no clue how to keep it all together. And I guess part of it is this passion for music that He has placed in my mind, body, and soul. That keeps me motivated to keep grinding and staying patient while He continues to orchestrate all of this unmerited favor in my music life and my family life in general.

Thank you for blessing me with your time for this interview. Is there anything else you want to add?

No doubt. Thanks for the opportunity to share my story with The Oracle.
Writer Dye is a project that has Playdough reimagining lyrics from iconic songs of multiple genres and molding them into entirely different songs. Playdough reinterprets songs from Bob Dylan, Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, Queen, Modest Mouse, Digable Planets, The Beatles, Bon Iver, The Strokes and other classics. Writer Dye features top shelf appearances from OhNo, Von Pea (Tanya Morgan), Copywrite, Theory Hazit and Adeem. Expect a strong emphasis on song writing as Playdough continues to challenge his own wordplay and delivery. It's an artisitc approach to songs you probably know, but what other emcee could flip this concept like Playdough does?
