Daily Devotional: The Tagline of Jesus' Story

A tagline or slogan is a catchy way for a brand to inspire customers, like when nike says, "just do it" or apple says, "think different."  A tagline's a way to say, "hey! this is who we are, what we're about, and why we exist." And when a tagline or slogan sticks, it can be an effective way to get people to think about your product or brand nearly every day, especially if you create a jingle to go with it.

Jesus doesn't have a jingle, that I know of, but there is an ancient christian hymn that serves as an early tagline for Jesus. A christian leader named Paul took note of this tagline, or hymn, for us. He wrote,

"let this mind be in you which also is in christ jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross."

In simple words, Jesus was a humble servant. The Son of God, the creator of the universe, did not demand bells and whistles upon arrival, but slipped into the world as one with no reputation. at that time, it was assumed that the lower-case "g" gods demanded celebrity treatment.

But Jesus, he was treated as an imposter, as an outsider, as a criminal. And to crystallize this for his followers, at one point, Jesus did the unthinkable. He didn't just take on the nature of a servant, he took on the nature of the lowest of all servants, the foot-washing servant, and he washed the feet of his disciples. But Jesus' tagline as a humble servant was never meant for him alone. On the night he washed the disciples feet, he challenged them to take his tagline and make it their tagline, to be the type of people who serve others by doing even the most mundane and difficult tasks for the sake of others.

Jesus was a humble servant, and he calls us and enables us through the holy spirit to be humble servants, too.
