Daily Devotional: Stop Worrying | God is in Control!

I am reminded of these lyrics by Alvin Slaughter: lay down your burdens at the altar, cast all your cares upon the Lord. There is no reason for a heavy heart, no need to worry anymore.
Yes! You guessed right! Our topic today is Stop Worrying!

Matthew 6 verse 34 tells us not to worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
One thing a lot of believers ask is this: “if a lot of scriptures in the bible tells us not to worry, why then am I so worried, where are all these worrying coming from?
Your emotions carry a lot of influence in your life, sometimes you express them toward others with joy, happiness, peace, kindness, and goodness. Other times, your emotional expressions can be cruel and hurtful. You have emotions so that you can enjoy life and express your inner being to others. The problem, however, arises when your emotions control you instead of you controlling them. In Genesis 3, When Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge it brought out a whole new set of attributes they were not created with. Guilt, Fear, Sadness, Envy, Resentment, Loneliness, Anger, Frustration and Yes, Worry came into the mix. They passed these negative emotions as they began to populate the earth. Throughout Scripture, we see many people expressing their emotions. Saul was jealous of David (1 Sam.18:6-9). Hannah expressed great sadness and cried out to God (1 Sam. 1:10). Elijah, supposedly a powerful man of great faith and courage, confessed numerous times in Scripture that he was afraid (1 Kings 19:2-4) but when you look at the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shares three different times with those gathered to listen, Stop Worrying! Stop Worrying! Stop Worrying! (Matt. 6:25-34). This shows that worry does not come from God. 2nd Timothy 1 verse 7 tells us that God didn’t give us any bad spirit instead he gave us a sound mind. Worry is not an attribute of a sound mind. As the world grows, worry grows with it. There are just some distressful things in life that are naturally going to cause you to worry. It could be based on health, finances, job, family issues and much more. Worrying also comes with wrong thinking in our minds, when we do not fully trust in God and His Word. Other times worrying is unconscious, it is possible to be worried and not even know where it is coming from. It doesn’t matter where your worry is coming from but you should be able to deal with it head-on. While worry itself is not a sin, it should not last, if it does it can lead to sin. Imagine a person is worried about a particular test result coming from the doctor, if the person keeps worrying it can cause fear which might lead to murmuring and complaining, which is a sin in the eyes of God.

Apostle Paul in Philippians 4:6 says Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

You should understand that afflictions are part of life, you can’t avoid them.

Remember in John 16 verse 33 that Jesus himself told his disciples, “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Because you are a child of God, doesn’t exempt you from afflictions or trials. Yes, you have a victorious life but this does not mean there won’t be difficult times. Apostle Paul does not deny that affliction exists or comes into our lives. He is admonishing us not to be worried about anything as worry leads to bigger problems, such as anxiety which we all know if not controlled can be diagnosed as a mental illness.

Reasons why you should Stop Worrying
There are many reasons why you should avoid worrying, it has a negative effect on every area of your life.
Worry divides your mind: Worry is a distraction, and it aims to pull you in many different directions so that you can’t concentrate or focus. Once you can’t focus, your mind is diverted from important matters.
Worry reduces productivity: Whatever you’re doing if you are worried about it, it will slow you down. If your mind is divided and preoccupied with worries, you can’t give your full attention and energy to what you should be focusing on.
Worry affects your relationship with other people: A worried person is always talking about their problems. Every time you see these individuals, they go on and on about the things in their lives that they are concerned about but they never really do anything about it. Their worry affects their relationship with everyone around them.
