Daily Devotional: Proverbs 12:4 “A Virtuous Woman is a Crown…” (Part 7)

“Don’t forget the emeralds that emanate esteem, earnest commitment, encouragement and endurance. Adorn your crown with amethysts of admiration, affection, affirmation, approval, appreciation and attentiveness.”

– NANCY CAMPBELL

Proverbs 12:4: “A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.”

Genesis 2:18: “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Matthew Poole’s Commentary on Genesis 2:18: “The Lord God saidor, had saidto wit, upon the sixth day, on which the woman was made, Genesis 1:27-28Not goodnot convenient either for my purpose of the increase of mankind, or for man’s personal comfort, or for the propagation of his kind. Meet for hima most emphatical phrase, signifying thus much, one correspondent to himsuitable both to his nature and necessity, one altogether like to him in shape and constitution, disposition and affection; a second self; or one to be at hand and near to himto stand continually before him, familiarly to converse with him, to be always ready to succour, serve, and comfort him; or one whose eye, respect, and care, as well as desire, Genesis 3:16, should be to him, whose business it shall be to please and help him.”

What does it mean to have a teachable spirit? Let me answer this question by first saying that none of us like to be told what to do. We have our own agenda, our personal goals. We want to come and go as we please, wake up when we want and go to bed when we want. Eat what we want. Our sinful mentality is: Don’t tell me what to do; I jolly well know what to do. This mentality has caused no small stir in marriages. Yes, even in my marriage as I have not always displayed a teachable spirit. That unteachable spirit can do much damage in a marriage or in any relationship for that matter.

So, what does it mean to have a teachable spirit? It means having the mentality of, first of all, I do not know everything. It’s a mentality that says, ‘What do you want me to do for you, husband? Tell me! Tell me! Tell me!’ Picture the wife running behind her husband, hanging on to his coattail for life while the husband is sprinting ahead carrying out God’s vision, mission, and purpose for the family, and she is crying out, ‘Tell me, tell me, how can I help you! What do you want me to do, husband?’ She is crying out (silently or loudly) to be that help meet that God placed within her to be.

Ladies, let’s ask God to give us a teachable spirit as we strive to be the help meet He wants us to be.
