Daily Devotional: Proverbs 12:4 - “A Virtuous Woman is a Crown…” (Part 5)

“Have you positioned pearls in your crown – pearls of patience, peace, perseverance and prayer for your husband? Oh don’t forget the rubies, the rarest of all gems. Is your crown radiating with rubies of reverence and respect for your husband?”

– NANCY CAMPBELL

Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on Proverbs 12:4: “Those who have grace, will delight in the instructions given them. …A wife who is pious, prudent, and looks well to the ways of her household, who makes conscience of her duty, and can bear crosses; such a one is an honour and comfort to her husband. She that is the reverse of this, preys upon him, and consumes him.”

Proverbs 12:4: “A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.”

A virtuous woman has a teachable spirit. In the context of marriage, she realizes that her husband is going to tell her or instruct her on how and when to do something sometimes without telling her why. If he is a good husband, he is going to correct her when she does wrong. Thus, she has to be open to his teachings and correction realizing that that is part of his job as head of the home. Ephesians 5:25-29 explains it best, which I will only lightly touch on here. Just as Jesus Christ teaches, rebukes, and chastises the church/Christians as a show of His love for us, the husband standing in the stead of God in the home, has similar responsibilities.

He is going to stand before God one day and give a report on how he ran his home. Was he a slacker? Did he not take his headship seriously? Did he instruct you, his wife, in what to do and what not to do so the family could operate like a well-oiled machine and bring glory to God? Or did he overlook your misdeeds and let you sin and get away with it, thus allowing you to bring shame to your christian testimony before the world? When he stands before God, what kind of report do you want him to give about you? The ball is in your court. Let us pray and ask God to give us a teachable spirit.
