Daily Devotional: Proverbs 12:4 - “A Virtuous Woman is a Crown…” (Part 13)

“One expression in Titus 2 deserves special notice. It is the word homemakers. The Greek word is oikourgous, which literally means “workers at home.” Oikos is the Greek word for “home,” and ergon means “work, employment.” It suggests that a married woman’s first duty is to her own family, in her own household. Managing her own home should be her primary employment, her first task, her most important job, and her true career.”

– JOHN MACARTHUR

Proverbs 12:4: “A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.”

Matthew Poole’s Commentary on Proverbs 12:4:
A crown; a singular ornament and matter of his glorying and joy.

That maketh ashamed; that by her folly or wickedness bringeth shame to herself and to her husband. As rottenness in his bones; loathsome, and vexatious, and pernicious.”

The virtuous woman works at building up her home and makes it a welcoming place.

We can begin building up our homes . . .

    • by cultivating the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (Galatians 5:22-23);

    • by being obedient and submissive to our husbands (Ephesians 5:22);

    • by exercising faith in God (Proverbs 31:30);

    • by making sure everything is in its proper place (1 Corinthians 14:33);

  • by keeping our spirit in check (Proverbs 25:28).

The wise woman will make sure her home is a welcoming place. Or, as the saying goes: a bit of Heaven on earth.
