Daily Devotional: Proverbs 12:4 - “A Virtuous Woman is a Crown…” (Part 12)

“There is no jewel in the world so valuable as a chaste and virtuous woman.”

– MIGUEL DE CERVANTES

Proverbs 12:4: “A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.”

Matthew Poole’s Commentary on Proverbs 12:4:

A crown; a singular ornament and matter of his glorying and joy.

That maketh ashamed; that by her folly or wickedness bringeth shame to herself and to her husband. As rottenness in his bones; loathsome, and vexatious, and pernicious.”

***

Have you ever picked up a rotten fruit? Your fingers just sink into its slime. Yuck! You immediately throw it away and scrub your hands under hot, soapy water. How about rotten meat? Nothing stinks like rotten meat. You cannot eat rotten meat lest you get sick. You throw away rotten food in the trash, oftentimes having double bagged it, and immediately take it to the dumpster. You want it out of your home, out of your sight; you do not want its smell lingering around the house.

Sadly, this is the same feeling and reaction of some husbands towards their “rotten” wives. A shameful wife is as rottenness in her husband’s bones. He wants to throw her away . . . and some husbands do take action and throw their wives away either through separation, divorce, and, tragically and especially wrongfully, some even through murder. Some husbands stay put but ignore their wife, mistreat her, call her outside of her name, etc.

Are you “rottenness” to your husband? You can tell by the way he treats you. If you want to garner respect and honor from your husband and not be viewed as something rotten to be thrown away, then show forth behaviour worthy of such respect and honor.
