Daily Devotional: How to Talk to the King

by Tonja Taylor

Every king has a protocol, and the LORD God certainly does! Although He is so gracious as to receive us any time, anywhere when we are His children by our faith in the shed blood of Jesus on the cross (John 3:14-17Romans 10:9-10), there is still a right way to approach Him when making certain types of prayers

First of all, our God is a postive, joyful God! Yes, He is the Righteous Judge of all, and He is first our Father Who delights in us! He loves praise and peace and joy (and all of these actually come from Him)--just like most people do--when we are positive and joyful! Here is Psalm 89:14-18, from The Message, that delightfully reminds us of this:

The Right and Justice are the roots of your rule;
Love and Truth are its fruits.
Blessed are the people who know the passwords of praise,
who shout on parade in the bright presence of God.
Delighted, they dance all day long; they know
who you are, what you do—they can’t keep it quiet!
Your vibrant beauty has gotten inside us—
you’ve been so good to us! We’re walking on air!
All we are and have we owe to God,
Holy God of Israel, our King!

The LORD God of Heaven and earth is the Great King of all.

"Great is the LORD, and most worthy of praise, in the city of our God, His holy mountain. --Psalm 48:1

He loves all people, and has a special place for us His kids--just like any good parent does; preference is given to one's own children above others.  We can come boldly (not arrogantly, but fearlessly, praise the LORD! to His Throne of Grace at any time. Hallelujah!

Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of  grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].--Hebrews 4:16, AMPC

Just like any king--and parent!--however, the proper way to approach Him is in love and respect and thanksgiving.

4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to Him, bless and  affectionately praise His name! 5 For the Lord is good; His mercy and loving-kindness are everlasting, His faithfulness and truth endure to all generations.-- Psalm 110:4-5, AMPC

Also, you must wear the garment of Salvation, and the Robe of Righteousness---only given when one receives Christ Jesus as Savior and LORD.

10 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.--Isaiah 61:10, AMPC

So we talk to God as our loving Father, being intimate with Him in relationship. He knows all about us--even every word before we speak it.

For there is not a word in my tongue [still unuttered], but, behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.--Psalm 139:4, MAPC

So we can come to Him with any problem, any emotion, and know that He is big enough to handle it. He will not reject us. How great and gracious and merciful and faithful is our Father God!

Trust in, lean on, rely on, and have confidence in Him at all times, you people;  pour out your hearts before Him. God is a refuge for us (a fortress and a high tower). Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!--Psalm 62:8, AMPC

Hallelujah!

So He is first our dear Father, Who knows all things, and Who knows us better than we know ourselves.

However, when we approach Him as king and judge, to petition Him for justice---like when someone goes before a judge in a court of law--there is an order to follow. First, we praise and thank Him, with our words and singing. We can proclaim His Word to Him--He loves to fulfill His Word. We bring before Him what we need and want, and remind Him of His Word.

Another very important thing to do is to repent--confess any sin, any wrong, that He shows us, and ask Him to forgive us.  This is very important, so that the enemy--the accuser--can no longer accuse us, nor have any right to withhold anything from us.

So we bring praise and thanksgiving to the King, the Righteous Judge, and we are allowed to approach Him, to come into His courts.

Hallelujah!

Then, we ask His Holy Spirit (Who is God in us!) to reveal to us anything for which we need to repent--aplogize--to Him. After that, we proclaim His promises--His Word to Him, and ask Him to fulfill His Word to us.

He will!

[They are living memorials] to show that the Lord is upright and faithful to His promises; He is my Rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.--Psalm 92:15, AMPC

Hallelujah!

So talk to the King--your loving Daddy God, and the Righteous Judge Who judges on your behalf and avenges you against the enemy--today, and every day! He loves you!
