Daily Devotional: Abundant Life and Service

We have a tendency to think of the apostles as super saints. Yet, like us they were human. They were tempted, tried and troubled. They experienced emotions. I’ve always been impressed by one particular passage shared by Apostle Paul.

“And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.  I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling (1 Corinthians 2:1-3 NKJV).”

In humility, the apostle/missionary admitted his weakness and fear. Today, one might say Paul ‘shook in his boots.’ It’s hard for me to imagine Apostle Paul being afraid of anything. He confronted legalists with tenacity and boldly proclaimed the gospel of grace. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Paul planted churches and endured beating and imprisonment.

He had learned the secret to abundant life and service. Paul had a holy fear (reverence) of God.

“Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:  I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.  I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:11-13 NKJV).”

He needed nothing more; the LORD was enough.
