The Baltimore Sun’s editorial board published a scathing op-ed entitled ‘Better to have a few rats than to be one’ slamming the president for attacking the city and Rep. Elijah Cummings on Saturday, hours after Trump trashed the city as a ‘disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess’

The Baltimore Sun’s editorial board has published a stinging response to President Donald Trump‘s rant against the Maryland city, after he smeared it as a ‘disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess’.

Trump launched his scathing attack on the ‘dangerous and filthy’ city where ‘no human being would want to live’ on Twitter on Saturday, digging at Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings who criticized the president for conditions at the southern border.

The city’s paper the Baltimore Sun fired back with a scathing op-ed titled ‘Better to have a few rats than to be one’ published Saturday evening, where the editors slammed the ‘dishonest’ president and said he’s just as responsible for Baltimore’s faults as Cummings is.

‘If there are problems here, rodents included, they are as much his responsibility as anyone’s, perhaps more because he holds the most powerful office in the land,’ the op-ed says.

The piece further accused Trump of attacking Cummings, who is black, and other African American Congressmen. It also pointed out that Trump misspelled Cummings’ name in his Twitter rant.

‘It’s not hard to see what’s going on here. The congressman has been a thorn in this president’s side, and Mr. Trump sees attacking African American members of Congress as good politics, as it both warms the cockles of the white supremacists who love him and causes so many of the thoughtful people who don’t to scream,’ the piece said.

Trump’s smear campaign of the city was triggered when Cummings complained about conditions at the border and Border Control, leading the president to claim the conditions are ‘clean, efficient & well run’ and that Baltimore was ‘FAR WORSE and more dangerous’.

‘Of course, they are not,’ the op-ed said on those border conditions for migrants. ‘Unless you are fine with all the overcrowding, squalor, cages and deprivation to be found in what the Department of Homeland Security’s own inspector-general recently called “a ticking time bomb.”‘

The op-ed said the president jumped to attack Baltimore after Fox & Friends aired a segment criticizing the city and compared its poor communities to the camps.

‘This is a president who will happily debase himself at the slightest provocation. And given Mr. Cummings’ criticisms of U.S. border policy, the various investigations he has launched as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, his willingness to call Mr. Trump a racist for his recent attacks on the freshmen congresswomen, and the fact that “Fox & Friends” had recently aired a segment critical of the city, slamming Baltimore must have been irresistible in a Pavlovian way,’ the op-ed said.

‘Fox News rang the bell, the president salivated and his thumbs moved across his cell phone into action,’ it said.

The editors said they would not sink to Trump’s name-calling but slammed him as unfit for office.

‘We would tell the most dishonest man to ever occupy the Oval Office, the mocker of war heroes, the gleeful grabber of women’s private parts, the serial bankrupter of businesses, the useful idiot of Vladimir Putin and the guy who insisted there are “good people” among murderous neo-Nazis that he’s still not fooling most Americans into believing he’s even slightly competent in his current post,’ the op-ed said.

‘Better to have some vermin living in your neighborhood than to be one,’ it closed.

The Baltimore Sun wasn’t the only one to fire back at the president after he disgraced the city.

Baltimore’s Mayor Bernard Young blasted Trump for his rant, defending Rep. Cummings as a respected lawmaker.

‘It’s completely unacceptable for the political leader of our country to denigrate a vibrant American City like Baltimore, and to viciously attack U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings a patriot and a hero,’ Young said in a statement.

‘Mr. Trump’s rhetoric is hurtful and dangerous to the people he’s sworn to represent. As the Mayor of Baltimore, I won’t stand for anyone, not even the alleged Leader of the Free World, attacking our great City or our representative to Congress.

‘Mr. Trump, you are a disappointment to the people of Baltimore, our country, and to the world,’ he added.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led elected Democrats in denouncing Trump’s remarks, saying in a statement, ‘We all reject racist attacks against [Cummings] and support his steadfast leadership.’

But Trump turned up his defenses on Sunday, firing back at Pelosi saying,’ there is nothing wrong with bringing out the very obvious fact that Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore.’

He also called out his critics for using the ‘race card’ against him.

‘The Democrats always play the Race Card, when in fact they have done so little for our Nation’s great African American people. Now, lowest unemployment in U.S. history, and only getting better. Elijah Cummings has failed badly!’ Trump said.

Michelle Obama took to Twitter to share her subtle defiance for Trump’s remarks, sharing a video clip of Baltimore STEP team the Lethal Ladies who she saw perform back in 2017.

‘On #NationalDanceDay, I’m shouting out the Lethal Ladies, a Baltimore STEP team who I saw perform back in 2017. I’m so proud of you all – and every who’s dancing today!’ she shared.

In the clip the women are heard chanting ‘When they go low, we go high!’ and ‘we don’t stoop to their level’.
