An unexpected return to the playoffs didn’t last long for the Toronto Blue Jays.

They surprised many by getting to the wild-card series. The top-seeded Tampa Bay Rays surprised no one by shutting them down.

Tampa Bay hit two homers off Blue Jays ace Hyun-Jin Ryu in a six-run second inning and rolled to an 8-2 rout that eliminated Toronto in the minimum two games.

"We knew coming in it was a big challenge," said Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo. "We faced some great pitching and we just didn’t hit."

Mike Zunino hit a two-run shot and Hunter Renfroe belted a grand slam as the Rays advanced to the American League Division Series. Danny Jansen accounted for the Toronto offence with two solo homers.

Tampa Bay will next play Cleveland or New York. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead into Game 2 later Wednesday.

The Blue Jays benefited from Major League Baseball’s expanded 2020 post-season structure by taking the eighth and final seed in the American League. The team’s young core made strides over the 60-game campaign to qualify for the playoffs but were overmatched upon arrival.

"It’s a learning experience," Montoyo said. "This is what it’s about in the playoffs. You’ve got to play the best teams."

Sunday's game between Pittsburgh and Tennessee has been postponed to either Monday or Tuesday to allow for further COVID-19 testing after positive tests this week from four Titans players and five team personnel members.

Sunday's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans has been postponed to either Monday or Tuesday.

The NFL said in a statement Wednesday that a new game date and time will be announced as soon as possible, adding that the postponement will "allow additional time for further daily COVID-19 testing and to ensure the health and safety of players, coaches and game day personnel."The postponement follows positive COVID-19 tests among the Titans from four players -- starting nose tackle DaQuan Jones, linebacker Kamalei Correa, long-snapper Beau Brinkley and practice squad tight end Tommy Hudson -- and five team personnel members this week.

Titans coach Mike Vrabel said Wednesday that some of the players who tested positive were experiencing flu-like symptoms.

"I know there's going to be a lot of questions about the game and about who's to blame and where it started. Nobody's to blame. We're in a pandemic," Vrabel said. "... This is a very unfortunate situation, but one that we're confident that we will be able to handle safely with the football team and the players' best interests in mind."

The 2020 NFL season has been unique so far due to COVID-19, but the NFL has handled the virus well and played all games as scheduled.

The early part of the season has paved the way for quite a few disappointments, which we examined last week, as well as quite a few surprises. Here’s a look at five of those surprises, with an emphasis on positive stories.

3. Alvin Kamara is ridiculous

The New Orleans Saints signed Alvin Kamara to a five-year, $75 million contract extension one day before their season started. In three weeks, he’s already made that decision look like a genius move. While the Saints have gotten off to a rocky start as a team, it has not been Kamara’s fault. He leads the team in rushing (153), yards per carry (4.9), receptions (27), receiving (285) and touchdowns (6). In fact, Kamara leads the entire league in scoring (36), which is a spot generally held by kickers.

2. NFC West is rocking

Teams in the NFC West have been up-and-down for years now, but early on here in 2020, there’s an argument to be made that they are home to four of the most talented teams in the entire league. The Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals are a combined 9-3 (7-2 in the conference) to start the season. One of those three losses came as part of a divisional game. They are also the only division in the NFL where all four teams are in the green in point differential. And all of that success is highlighted by quarterback Russell Wilson, who has gotten off to one of the hottest starts in history.

1. Josh Allen is an MVP candidate

It was obvious last season that Josh Allen had very real talent and was going to turn into a quality quarterback, but there were still some reservations on how high his ceiling actually was. Through three games in 2020, it’s safe to say he’s already among the best in football. Allen has already eclipsed 1,000 yards passing to go along with 10 touchdowns and just a single interception. Perhaps more impressive is that he’s completing 71.1 percent of his passes and doing most of his damage with his arm and not his legs. If not for the video game-like start for Russell Wilson, many would be arguing that he’s running away with the league MVP award.

Anthony Davis had never played in the NBA Finals before Wednesday night.

Based on his performance in Game 1 of between the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat, one would think Davis is a Finals veteran.

The Lakers All-Star had 34 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks in the Lakers’ 116-98 victory.

“First time I'm experiencing this,” Davis said. “Obviously want to come out and play well, and you want to come out and win. I've always put pressure on myself. I had the same thing Game 1 of the Western Conference finals, as well. When the ball gets tipped up, all that goes away and it's just basketball, but everything leading up to it, you're very excited.

“Your adrenaline is going early because you're so excited just to be here and get ready to go out there and play. It went away early but it was a great experience for me, great Game 1.”
