Michelle Obama says she rarely ventures into the West Wing to dispense policy advice to her husband -- and sometimes holds back from talking shop when the president has finished work for the day.
In an ABC "Nightline" interview airing in part Monday night, the first lady said her attention is focused on her own projects. She has taken the lead on issues such as reducing childhood obesity and supporting military families.
"I rarely step foot in the West Wing," Obama told "Nightline" anchor Cynthia McFadden. "In fact, people are shocked when they see me there. I rarely walk in that office because the truth is, he's got so many wonderful advisers. He's got a phenomenal cabinet. He's got people who are in the trenches on these issues every single day, and I'm kind of stepping in and out, and I've got my own set of issues. So I don't even have the kind of expertise and the time in to be able to provide the kind of advice and guidance that he's already getting."
Though she stays out of the West Wing, Obama has been utilized widely on the campaign trail. A Bloomberg analysis last month showed she had raised at least $17.5 million over 56 fundraisers, and that number has increased since.
And while the first lady holds degrees from both Princeton and Harvard Law School, she said she sometimes holds back from peppering her husband with criticism or concerns in the residence.
"In a job like this, the last thing the president of the United States needs when he walks in the door to come home is someone drilling him and questioning him about the decisions and choices that he's made," she said. "There are definitely times when I may feel something, but I'll hold back because I know he'll either get to that on his own or it's just not time."

The label of “Christian rap” can disappear, but if too much of the presence of Christ and His gospel remains, the mainstream will still shun you. So actually, more than the label has to go, but also the emphasis on Jesus, His glory, and His mindset has to go as well. We can be as relevant and creative as we want, but if our ideas and allegiance can be traced to Christ, we will ultimately be seen as a Christian who’s rapping “Christian stuff.”
A Preface for my Christ Family
Recently, I had the chance to read an article in XXL Magazine, which had the potential to excite me because it focused on Christian rap, but in the end somewhat disappointed and even grieved me. Internally, I was restless until finally deeming it necessary to respond for the sake of the glory of Christ, the benefit of His people, and the benefit of the mission to reach hip hop with the gospel. This is in no way meant to be adversarial or contentious, even though it may be kind of controversial. In light of my own flaws and inadequacies, and the tender nature of the subject matter, I have been hesitant to publicize my thoughts, but at the end of the day I concluded that this is what I do. Using hip hop artistry as a ministry, I proclaim the gospel, explain the gospel, and contend for the gospel even at my own peril. I confess, like pastor John Piper, “Some controversy is crucial for the sake of life giving truth. Running from it is a sign of cowardice. But enjoying it is usually a sign of pride.” He goes on to say, “Humility loves Christ exultation more than Christ-defending confrontation…” (Piper, Contending for Our All). I say, “yes and amen!” So I am not trying to “win” an argument, but rather seize a teachable moment. Leveraging this moment at this time makes good sense, especially since the issue at hand has a lot of buzz among “fans” of hip hop and Christian hip hop.
I intentionally wanted this dialogue to play out publicly because I see and sense a shift happening among those who are long time participants and supporters of what is known as Christian rap. I see the impact of some questionable thinking and acting that is affecting so many people that similar to Paul in Galatians 2, I find it beneficial to publicly draw attention to some of these matters.

Oprah Winfrey may be ranked #1 on the list of highest paid celebs again this year, but her reign may soon come to an end. Winfrey, who earned $165 million this year, is expected to see a steep decline in her annual earnings starting very soon.
Winfrey isn’t taking a salary from The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), which has been struggling since its inception. She’s also on the cover of every issue of O Magazine, which is working to stay afloat in a declining magazine industry. Winfrey has made some strides with OWN, interviewing one major celebrity after another, and she is doing three shows on OWN herself. But some wonder if this is going to be enough to keep her income at the top of the pile.
We heard the comments from both candidates and both of them swear that they’re telling the truth, but as we also know, politicians don’t necessarily value the truth as much as they value votes. So, who was telling more of the truth, Mitt Romney or Barack Obama? Huffington Post discusses the matter up close, so maybe this will help all of us to make sense of what we just saw on TV:
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney spun one-sided stories in their first presidential debate, not necessarily bogus, but not the whole truth.
Here’s a look at some of their claims and how they stack up with the facts:
ROMNEY on cutting the deficit: “Obamacare’s on my list. … I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS. … I’ll make government more efficient.”
THE FACTS: Romney has promised to balance the budget in eight years to 10 years, but he hasn’t offered a complete plan. Instead, he’s promised a set of principles, some of which – like increasing Pentagon spending and restoring more than $700 billion in cuts that Democrats made in Medicare over the coming decade – work against his goal. He also has said he will not consider tax increases.
He pledges to shrink the government to 20 percent of the size of the economy, as opposed to more than 23 percent of gross domestic product now, by the end of his first term. The Romney campaign estimates that would require cuts of $500 billion from the 2016 budget alone. He also has pledged to cut tax rates by 20 percent, paying for them by eliminating tax breaks for the wealthiest and through economic growth.
Today, it was announced that Oprah Winfrey will form an exclusive partnership with her good friend Tyler perry. The award winning actor and producer and the queen of media have made an agreement in which OWN will become his only destination for any new series and projects going forward. Already in the pipelines, Perry is working on two new scripted series for OWN that are expected to premiere in mid 2013. Both series will have Perry as their writer and executive producer and he will also direct them.
After a very challenging and uphill climb since its debut, OWN is now seeing steady growth and momentum. The network has seen double-digit increases in ratings for the last three quarters across both primetime and daytime and even tripled its ratings growth in September.
Perry has also been enjoying much success with three different television series, “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne,” “Meet the Browns” and the new “For Better or Worse” . All three of the Tyler Perry comedies have enjoyed record-breaking ratings.
Winfrey, who is the CEO of OWN said,
“I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come. We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world.”
Perry is just as pleased to partner with his friend, Oprah, saying ,
“It’s a dream realized to partner with Oprah and bring scripted programming to OWN. She has accomplished so much with the network and I’m excited to work with her to be a part of its continued growth.”
David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery Communications, also threw in a few words saying,
“Bringing Tyler Perry exclusively to OWN is a major coup. Today’s announcement demonstrates the power of the Oprah brand to attract some of the biggest names in television and film to OWN. OWN’s growth over the past nine months has been nothing short of phenomenal and, with the continued support of our advertising and affiliate partners, this bold move into scripted entertainment positions OWN to continue that momentum going forward.”
