Turn That Music Off!

Bring Back That Old

I remember back in my days when parents used to come into our rooms and tell us to, “Turn off that hip-hop music! You need to be listening to some Marvin Gaye.” Remember that? I think I must be getting old, because I am (we are) starting to sound like our parents. We “emcees” and “lyricists” continually talk bad about the new music we hear on the radio. It’s the same thing!

I probably complain more than most about how bad it is. Even in these messages I say how so un-creative it is and how commercial it has become. And that it is not just with hip-hop but also with all genres of music. I’m not just “hating” on pop music. I am an equal opportunist. It all is just bad music. And I truly believe the record labels know it. I don’t know where they get their definition of what a “hit” is! Seriously!

I’m not going to lie. Some (not all, but some) of the so-called “Holy Hip-Hop” is horrible! I mean it is just pure God-awful! I don’t even think God likes it. And the reason why is because there is no anointing from the Spirit on it. It’s all “talent” and “skills”; translation: FLESH in it. That is not what you offer the Creator of the universe. Believe me, it is a horrible smell in His nostrils and you are making Him angry.

The stuff we offer to God is like what Saul offered up. Or what the sons of Eli offered up. Trust me you do not want to do that. The music we offer God should be like, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:11). We got to be like those wise men from the east. You don’t offer the King of Glory just anything!

But that is not the primary topic that I want to talk about. The revelation that I got out of Matthew 2:1-12 was that fact that when God does something new among His people, the older generation seem to not like it. I already know why they don’t like it. I am pretty sure you know why they don’t like it. And even Jesus tells us why they (and we) don’t like it.

Jesus said the ultimate reason was this:

No man also having drunk old wine straightway [immediately] desireth new: for he saith, The old is better. (Luke 5:39).

The initial response to the new thing of God or even in the world is to say, “The Old IS better.” The second response to the new thing is to FIGHT IT! Which brings me to the topic of discussion for this message and that topic is called persecution.
