When one of the best defenses in the NFL in the San Francisco 49ers takes on one of the most explosive offenses in the league in the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LIV, something’s gotta give.

Despite the best efforts of the 49ers’ vaunted defensive line throughout the game, Patrick Mahomes remained resilient under constant duress, and managed to do just enough to stay within striking distance before leading the Chiefs to their first lead in the fourth quarter since they were up 7-3.

Mahomes threw two interceptions for the first time since Week 11 of the 2018 season.

Down by 10, the Chiefs were in familiar territory, a deficit they have had to overcome in every single playoff game. When it mattered most, Mahomes turned on that Mahomes magic and the Kansas City Chiefs were able to clinch a win. It's been 50 years since the team has won a Super Bowl.

The 49ers’ struggles to maintain their double-digit point lead in the fourth quarter in Super Bowl LIV harkened back to the last time their head coach Kyle Shanahan was tasked with holding down a 19-point lead against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI. At the time, he was an offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons.
