The Redskins are planning on starting Kirk Cousins at quarterback in their regular-season opener against the Dolphins, sources told ESPN’s Dianna Russini.

Cousins, who has started nine games over his first three seasons in the NFL, would get the starting nod over Robert Griffin III, who is awaiting clearance to play after suffering concussion like symptoms Aug. 20 in a preseason game.

Cousins, 27, is expected to start Saturday night’s preseason game against the Ravens. The 27-year-old has been sharp in his first two preseason appearances, completing 20 of 26 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown.

Griffin practiced with the Redskins this past week and initially was cleared by Dr. Robert N. Kurtzke, an independent neurologist, to play against the Ravens.

But after “further scrutiny” by Kurtzke and a team of doctors, Griffin instead will be sidelined for at least one more week.
