I recently caught wind of Rakim’s single called “Holy Are You” and as I was peepin’ it out a question popped up in my mind and I asked myself, “Now listening to this song, how come The R doesn’t get labeled as a Muslim rapper?” I mean, he spits spiritual undertones just like any other Christian emcee but yet it seems that Christian artists can’t break from that label of a Christian rapper, Gospel rapper and Holy Hip Hopper.
Now I look at Rakim as a dope emcee that just happens to be Muslim and I can’t name a rapper that he hasn’t influenced, including Christian emcees. So how come the world looks at our artist and express the opposite? How come Christian artists can’t be dope emcees, nothing more, nothing less? For those artists that feel that they are called to the secular arena, how do you want the industry or mainstream to view you and your music? Somebody talk to me.
