Jon Corbin single ‘You Care’ is an affirmation for the broken-hearted

The Canadian hip-hop and spoken word artist is back with his first release since the Hearts Set Ablaze EP.

How do you hang on when the storms of life rage on?

It’s a question Jon Corbin, the respected Canadian hip-hop and spoken word artist, grappled with for years.

His answer is simple, beautiful and hard-fought, captured with typical candor and attentive grace in the new single “You Care,” featuring Jeremy Rodney-Hall.

“‘You Care’ is a personal song that affirms God’s love for us even in the face of hard times,” said Corbin, discussing his first release of 2018.

“I hope this song inspires people to connect with God despite the problems they are facing.”

Corbin is a veteran artist who has quietly carved a niche in Canada’s hip-hop community, collaborating with multiple Polaris Music Prize nominee Shad, Juno Award winner Caroline Brooks of The Good Lovelies, and many other revered emcees on both sides of the border.

“You Care” is a song for those who are tired of fighting through life’s challenges, with a sound inspired by the soulfulness of Leon Bridges, the lyricism of Chance the Rapper, and the worshipful gospel of Israel Houghton.

“In previous songs I had written about wanting to seek God above my circumstances, and I felt I was failing because I was so caught up in my present issues,” said Corbin.

“In studying the Psalms, I saw so many times where the Psalmist lifted their concerns to God and then moved to worship. Of note was Psalm 13: 5-6 — ‘But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.’

“I wanted to make a song that I could sing to myself in the hard times. Hopefully it’s a song other people can sing as well.”

“You Care” follows the pattern of the Psalms, where a concern is lifted up to God, followed by praise. Here, Corbin lifts up a current struggle, yet affirms the truth that the love of God is greater than any circumstance.
