We jumped right into it this week of NBA basketball on Monday with nine games on the docket. Unfortunately, a number of key injuries kept this from being one of the best nights of early-season action, but we had no shortage of excitement.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (concussion protocol) and Kawhi Leonard (rest) both missed out as the Bucks took on the Raptors in a battle of the last two unbeaten teams. Elsewhere, Anthony Davis (elbow) wasn't in the lineup, taking away from what could have been a really fun Pelicans versus Nuggets contest.

The story of the night, however, was Klay Thompson, who set a new NBA record with 14 3-pointers in a blowout win over the Bulls. Meanwhile, LeBron James' Lakers fell to 2-5 after a narrow loss to Jimmy Butler, Karl-Anthony Towns and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Here's all you need to know about Monday night's action

Thompson sets 3-point record

Well, it looks like the only player who could break Steph Curry's 3-point record was his own teammate. Klay Thompson scored 52 points on Monday, sinking an NBA-record 14 3-pointers along the way.

Butler hits dagger

With the Wolves up by two and less than a minute to play, Jimmy Butler showed why he thinks so highly of himself. He hit an ice-cold dagger to seal the game for the Wolves, who defeated LeBron James and the Lakers at home.

DeRozan takes over

The Dallas Mavericks took the Spurs to overtime, but in the end it was just too much DeMar DeRozan. The All-Star guard hit huge shots late, and finished with 34 points, nine assists and six rebounds in the win.

Warriors, Klay put up record first half

It's safe to say that Klay Thompson has broken out of his shooting slump. The Warriors guard tied an NBA record by making 10 3-pointers in the first half, as his teammates rejoiced.

Thompson ended the half with 36 points on 12-for-16 shooting and 10-for-14 3-pointers, but he wasn't the only one who was hot. The Warriors set a new NBA record by making 17 first-half 3-pointers and put up the second-highest first-half point total in league history with 92.

KAT swats LeBron

Karl-Anthony Towns sent the message early that there weren't going to be any easy buckets for the Lakers on Monday. He swatted LeBron's shot into the stands early in the first quarter.

Browns Fire Coach Jackson, O-coordinator Haley

The Browns have fired coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley and named Gregg Williams interim coach.

The Cleveland Browns fired coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley on Monday after a three-game losing streak derailed a promising start to the season.

The Browns also announced that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who is in his second season with Cleveland, will be the interim coach. Running backs coach and associate head coach Freddie Kitchens will serve as offensive coordinator. Although there was speculation that Williams' son Blake Williams could be the Browns defensive coordinator, the team said that Gregg Williams will serve in both roles.

Each of the Browns' past six head coaches were fired after that season's second game against the Steelers.

The Browns are 2-5-1 this season, doubling the win total from Jackson's first two seasons with the team. Cleveland was 1-15 in his first season and 0-16 last season. The Browns hired John Dorsey as general manager late last season, and Dorsey kept Jackson on as coach despite the team's winless season.

Ever since he topped the 10,000 career yards rushing mark last season, LeSean McCoy set a "12K or bust" objective.

Bust was more like it for the Buffalo Bills running back on Monday night, when McCoy totaled 13 yards on 12 carries in continuing what's been a season-long struggle for the 10th year player.

"I've had bad games, but this? The flow of the season and everything is bad," McCoy said following a 25-6 loss to the New England Patriots. "I'm 30 years old. I've been playing since high school. This stuff has never happened to me. Yeah, it's tough."

McCoy, who has missed one game with a groin injury, has just 257 yards rushing through eight games. That's 20 yards more than he had in his first two games with Philadelphia in 2013, when McCoy finished with an NFL-leading 1,607 yards rushing.

What hurts even more is being part of an anemic offense that is doing very little in supporting a defense that limited Tom Brady and the Patriots to scoring four field goals through three quarters.

Klay Thompson’s incredible 3-point shooting binge Monday in Chicago broke one of Stephen Curry’s records. And Curry was thrilled to help him do it.

Both Ty Montgomery of the Packers and Todd Gurley of the Rams kept Aaron Rodgers on the sideline in the final two minutes Sunday

Ty Montgomery gets the Bonehead Award for Week 8 for keeping Aaron Rodgers on the sideline.

Todd Gurley gets the Egghead Award for Week 8 for keeping Aaron Rodgers on the sideline.

Ensuring Green Bay's clutch quarterback stayed off the field after Greg Zuerlein hit a 34-yard field goal with 2:05 left allowed the Los Angeles Rams to remain the league's only unbeaten team with a 29-27 win Sunday.

Rodgers never got a shot at his 22nd career game-winning drive because Montgomery ignored instructions to take a knee for a touchback and instead took the kickoff out of the end zone .

That was a bad move as far as clock management goes, and it quickly turned into a downright destructive decision when linebacker Ramik Wilson blew him up at the 20-yard line, jarring the ball loose and smothering it.

"That play didn't lose the game," Rodgers said, "but it took away an opportunity to win."

Moments later, Gurley, cognizant that a missed extra point would leave Green Bay within striking distance, stopped running with a clear path to the end zone , allowing the Rams to run out the clock and keep Rodgers stewing on the sideline.

"That's the situational awareness we talk about," Rams coach Sean McVay said. "Unselfishness."

Both Gurley and Montgomery had been told exactly what to do in the very situations in which they found themselves.

Week 8 of the NFL season had its share of great performances. It also had its share of ugly ones. The season has been rough for the Dallas Cowboys. Things have been so bad, in fact, that one of their top men committed one of the week’s biggest blunders despite being on a bye week. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were done in by a struggling quarterback who’s now on the bench. The New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars each have struggling quarterbacks. Only their coaches don’t seem to realize it. Of course, the Green Bay Packers have a legendary quarterback. But another blunder kept Aaron Rodgers on the sideline at the game’s most critical point. There were many blunders to be had in Week 8. These were the biggest of the bunch. Jameis Winston has an unfathomably bad day in Cincinnati Tampa named Winston as its starting quarterback at the end of September. Not even one full month later, he was benched again. Anyone who saw what he did in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals will understand why. Winston threw four
