OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stephen Curry called his shot long before he stepped foot on the Oracle Arena floor Thursday night. Prior to a deflating 134-111 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, one that Curry exited early because of a left adductor strain, he spent some of his post-practice time Wednesday afternoon discussing the state of the new-look Bucks -- the team that has earned the attention of the league throughout the first few weeks of the season.

"I think [their situation] is very similar to four years ago here," Curry explained. "A change of scenery sometimes helps. You get a little boost of energy, a little shift in focus and perspective, and that little difference can unlock something. It's still early. They're taking care of business like they should. It's important when you have that much potential to get off to a good start, but the season will shape out as

Curry, the two-time NBA MVP, knows from experience just how much a coaching change and some roster tweaking can do for a young team on the rise. Four years ago, Steve Kerr was tapped to replace Mark Jackson as head coach of the Golden State Warriors, reconstructing what would become one of the league's most prolific offenses in the process.

This summer, the Bucks tapped Mike Budenholzer to replace interim head coach Joe Prunty, who took over for Jason Kidd midway through last season. Budenholzer, like Kerr, was brought in to make the Bucks' offense get up and go to a different beat than Prunty or Kidd could.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Devante Smith-Pelly got up from his seat.

The Washington Capitals forward had heard the unmistakably racist taunts from fans from inside the penalty box. As a black hockey player, he knew exactly what they meant by yelling, "Basketball, basketball, basketball!"

"It's just ignorant people being ignorant," Smith-Pelly said.

That scene unfolded in Chicago in February, 60 years after Willie O'Ree broke the NHL's color barrier and paved the way for more minorities to play the sport and reach its highest level. O'Ree is being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday for his pioneering career, and yet incidents like the one Smith-Pelly went through show how much more progress needs to be made, in a league that's 97 percent white and beyond.

"It's come a long way, but there's still a lot of things that still need to change," Edmonton defenseman Darnell Nurse said. "That just comes through minorities as a group working together to try to eliminate those things from this game."

Those things just keep happening.

In 2011, Philadelphia forward Wayne Simmonds had a banana thrown at him during a preseason game in London, Ontario.

The Carolina Panthers fell behind early and never recovered in a lopsided loss to the Steelers

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Carolina Panthers fell behind early and never recovered.

Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers offense used an early surge and a first-quarter defensive touchdown to jump out to a big lead as the Steelers pounded the Panthers 52-21 on Thursday night for their fifth straight victory.

"I tell you what, it sure enough was a humbling piece of pie," Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said. "It was a learning experience for a lot of guys. If we are as good as we expect us to be, we have to find a way to win games in a hostile environment."

The Panthers (6-3) saw their three-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt in a city where they've never won. Carolina fell to 0-4 all-time in Pittsburgh and was never really in it after the Steelers scored 21 points in the game's first 11 minutes.

"We had a lot of our noses bleeding early on and we just have to stop it," Newton said. "We need to find ways to keep things going in our favor. We just got outplayed today."

Newton's showdown with Roethlisberger also never materialized.

Roethlisberger finished 22 of 25 passes for 328 yards with five touchdowns and a perfect 158.3 passer rating. The Steelers, who punted for the first time with 9:34 to play, were 8 of 9 on third down with Roethlisberger in the game.
