Derrick Langley skipped work at KFC to join other fast food workers protesting outside a Midtown McDonalds restaurant on Monday morning.
"What we are going though isn't right. So I'm out here fighting, the same as everyone else," Langley said.
Monday's protesters were a small percentage of the city's 80,000 fast food restaurant workers, but they said the entire workforce deserves higher wages and the right to form a union without retaliation.
Most of the workers said they make the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. They are shooting for $15 an hour.
"We felt like $7.25 is not enough, and we won't stop until we get what we ask for," said Ricky Padin, a McDonalds employee.
"I have to live with my mom, I have no choice but to. Because I wouldn't be able to support myself on $7.25, you know?" said Kaye Smith, a Wendy's employee.
The protest attracted elected officials like City Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Christine Quinn and Rep. Carolyn Maloney of Manhattan and Queens.
"The economy is improving but we want it to improve for everyone," Maloney said.
