Jesus prayed in John 17:17: "Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth." (NASB) One of the standards I established in my book, "Made in the Image of God", to help interpret what I was trying to say within its pages was this: there are no contradictions within Scripture, for biblical truth the be true it must agree with all other biblical truth. What does that mean? Simply this. If the Scriptures says God hates divorce or drunkenness or homosexuality and a thought or suggestion comes to you which tries to rationalize these concepts as really being acceptable to God for what ever reason, then we have a contradiction in God's stated desire, thus truth has not been realized. Why? Because we have no continuity within God's expressed desires. This makes God a lier and the Scriptures state, God cannot lie. (Titus 1:2

This same concept is true about other aspects of our lives. Some one comes along and says that under this condition or that condition its acceptable to take this action. Is that a valid statement. What is the truth? By reading and understanding the Scriptures and God's character, we can know and come to understand what is the truth. If some one says to you that because someone treated you wrongly you have the right to take revengeful action against that person. Really! Is that the truth? When we compare that statement with what the Scriptures say, we get a different answer as expressed here: "Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. "But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:19-21; NASB) Any statement or concept that contradicts the Scriptures is false. This would also include anyone's interpretation of the Scriptures. Example: If someone interpreted the Scriptures one way and that interpretation contradicted other parts of the Scriptures, then we have not come to a correct interpretation, and the truth has yet to be realized.

The Scriptures warns us about twisting the truth as expressed in Romans 1:18-25:

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks; but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, that their bodies might be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. (NASB)

The moral of this passage is this. Anything that contradicts God's nature and character in us is a lie. To help us understand the truth about God's nature and character we have the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ expresses it this way: "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. "He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you. (John 16:13-14; NASB)

So the next time you are told or a thought comes to you that contradicts God's word or character, a lie is now confronting you, what you do with that lie is up to you!

Something to think about.
