Dietlicious, BetterBones.com, and Harvard Health Say Drinking Red Wine in Moderation Is a Healthy Choice – But the Key Is “in Moderation”

If you are looking for a healthier drink, red wine has been shown to be better for you.

According to experts, red varieties get the sign of approval because they are generally higher in useful plant substances.

And although these healthy chemicals are found in white wines, they are usually at much lower levels.

FEMAIL looks at some of the most important benefits of drinking red wine – and how a glass of Pinot noir or Merlot can help with heart health and strengthen your bones.

1. Red wine is packed with antioxidants

One of the major health benefits of drinking red wine is that it contains a lot of antioxidants, Dietlicious reports.

Antioxidants are essential to protect cells in the body against damage that can lead to infections and inflammations.

Those looking for a red with the highest number of antioxidants should consider Pinot Noir varieties.

2. Health benefits for bones

Another benefit of drinking red wine is that it is full of silicon – a mineral that helps improve bone strength.

The mineral cannot always be absorbed by the body, but contains water, vegetable foods and some drinks (silicon) in an absorbable form, reports BetterBones.com.

Mineral water, red wine and some types of herbal tea are among those drinks that contain silicon that can be absorbed by the body.

How much red wine is too much?

The Australian guidelines recommend that healthy adults should not drink more than 2 standard drinks on every day to reduce the lifelong risk of damage from alcohol-related illnesses or injuries.

They also recommend consuming up to 4 standard drinks on a single occasion to reduce the risk of alcohol-related injury.

A standard drink contains around 10 grams of alcohol – the amount that your body can handle in an hour.

A standard drink is much smaller than you may think. For instance, the average glass of wine served in a pub contains 1.5 standard drinks.

What are the standard portions of red wine?

On average a restaurant serves red wine – 150 ml 13.5%, or the equivalent of 1.6 standard drinks

Standard serve red wine – 100 ml 13.5%, or the equivalent of 1.0 standard drinks

Bottle of red wine – 750 ml 13.5% or the equivalent of 8 standard drinks

Barrel of red wine – 4 liters 13.5% or the equivalent of 43 standard drinks

Barrel of red wine – 2 liters of 13.5% or the equivalent of 21 standard drinks

3. Prevent stroke

Research has shown that moderate consumption of red wine can act as a blood thinner, which is essential for controlling a stroke.

Scientists at Harvard urge drinkers to make red wine their first choice because it contains resveratrol, a substance thought to protect the heart and brain.

Studies show that if you drink about one drink a day, your risk may be lower, said Dr. Rost.

Once you start drinking more than two drinks a day, you run a very high risk.

4. Reduces heart disease

According to Dietlicious experts, red wine tannins contain procyanidins (chemical compounds) that are effective in preventing cardiovascular disease.

It is clear that the health benefits of these specific compounds mean improved blood flow and blood vessel health.

Again, moderation is highly recommended.
